this the right place to ask for PC specs?

I'm looking for desktop PC specs that can run DA on (more or less) the
highest graphic settings and all that without any (noticeable) lag. I
have the recommended PC stats written down, but is that good enough to run DA in said
way?

Name the screen resolution you expect to be doing it with.

Other important considerations:

If you're working with or upgrading a relatively recent system, will you have > 4GB memory?

If so, will you have a 64-bit OS?

(Graphics that might be "okay" for a particular processor and 2GB of RAM on XP SP3 are not necessarily going to perform at the same level with 2GB RAM on Windows 7...)

At 1920x1080 I would buy an ATI HD 5850 to be on the safe side. I have an HD 5770 and it runs absolutely flawlessly at 1440x900, but I think it would start to slow down a bit at 1920x1080.

what would be a good screen resolution for DA?

buying a brand new desktop, and will aim for at least the 4GB memory (RAM right?). I've looked at a couple comps with 6 and 8 GB of memory.

I believe it will probably be a 64-bit OS. Probably Windows 7, since that's what comes with everything nowadays.

I guess I'll also post the system specs here when I get it, see if it's up to scratch (I'm not 100% computer savvy).

With 4GB RAM or more and Windows 7- 64 bit you should be fine for as far as RAM goes. The game does have some issues with Windows 7 and patch 1.03 in general, but not everyone on the forum has the same difficulties. Dragon Age runs fine with an Ati 4850 at 1920x1200, but it will slow down somewhat during big fights with many effects. Getting a faster video card like the 5850 mentioned before can reduce this, but many simultanious effects at maximum settings will always cause some amount of slowdown. Be sure to get a decent processor like an Intel core i5 750, core i7 860 or 875k if you want to have a very smooth Dragon Age experience, as the game takes quite a lot of CPU power. A fast quad-core processor as mentioned will not be wasted on this game. Should you look into AMD processors I would only recommend the very fastest quad-core available, at this time the AMD Phenom II X4 965. Do not go below a phenom || triple-core at 3GHz or this will probably be a cause for slowdowns on its own, regardless of the other components you choose.
Of course, all depends on your budget: an Ati 5850 video card and Intel core i7 875k processor will set you back about $ 600 for just those 2 components, while the Ati 4850 video card and AMD Phenom II X4 965 will only cost about $ 300 combined...
Make sure you go for the top cards in a certain product family, so from the Ati 4xxx series choose the 4850 (playable), 4870 (playable), or 4890 (better) and from the 5xxx series pick a 5850 (better) or 5870 (best). From NVidia get a GTX465 (better), GTX470 (better) or GTX480 (best). In general do not trust higher numbers blindly, as the 5670 may well be slower than the 4850... maybe it has some new features like DirectX 11 support, but it will lack the raw power you are looking for. By the way, the Ati 5770 is on par with the 4850, so if money is tight but you want a latest generation card it would be a fair choice.

My pc specs are

CPU: amd 2core OC to 3.4
GPU: ATI 3870 x2
RAM:4 gigs
OS: Windows 7 64bit

I run DO:A on its highest settings at 1680x1050 (max on my screen) and i am always above 40 fps

EDIT:this pc was built 2 years ago so im sure building a pc better than this will be fairly cheap!

1920x1080 is the aspect ratio/resolution most games and videos are designed for.(Such as Dragon Age: Origins!) But if you're picky and prefer slightly more vertical viewing space relative to the horizontal, 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 are fine widescreen computer monitor resolutions too. Or if you're not looking for a new display, the best resolution is the highest one yours supports.;)

For various widescreen resolutions, I'd say these cards are safe buys if you want flawless or close to it performance in your games.

1360x768: HD 5770
1440x900(same in performance as 1280x1024): HD 5770
1600x900: HD 5770
1680x1050: HD 5770, HD 5850, GTX 470
1920x1080 or higher: HD 5850, GTX 470, HD 5870, GTX 480

For everything else a Core i5 750 CPU and 4 GB of RAM is all you need. More won't hurt, but won't benefit much. The RAM speed is fairly unimportant too, as long as it's at least 1066.

If you are looking for a nice off-the-shelf gaming machine at a decent price, I suggest checking the Gateway FX-6831-01. Comes with 5850 card, 8G ram, 1.5TB 7200 RPM drive, I7-860 2.8G processor.

Depends on budget and how expereinced a PC gamer you are. Personally I'd go for a GTX 470 rather than a 5850 (I've had too many problems with ATI's drivers in the past), budget allowing.

Have a look at some 22 and 24" monitors. Some people find 24" a bit too much screen space, especially if they sit reasonably close. On the plus side, 22" will give you better performance in games.

The DAO executable is a 32 bit application so it can only address 2GB of memory in its user space. So 4GB of RAM with a 64 bit OS will be all you need for DAO. (Other 64 bitt application may be able to use more. Also 32 bit OS can only use about 3GB of memory.)

As for video cards, I have used both an nVidia GTX260-216 and GTX470. These were in a Dell XPS720 with a QX6800 and 8GB of RAM with a 2048x1152 display. Both cards delivered a fairly steady 55 to 60 FPS. (I play with VSync enabled.) The noticable difference between the two cards was the ability to use higher levels of AA. The GTX260's perfromance would degrade with the 8x AA. The GTX470 can use the 32x AA and still give 60 FPS. The GTX470 GPU usage was about 50% while the GTX260 was often at 95%. The GTX470 does have two major drawbacks, power usage and heat generation.

But any of the high end ATI or nVidia cards will require a good power supply and a well cooled case. Don't be cheap on either of these!

A small correction on the maximum possible memory usage: a 32-bit application can in fact use 4GB of RAM on a 64-bit operating system. However, for this to work it must have a special flag set in the program header. There are several small tools out there to do this, which came in very handy when I was using the Dragon Age toolset on endgame save files. With such files, the dragon age toolset will require about 3GB of RAM or fail to open the file. Setting the flag on the 32-bit toolset executable allowed it to open these files correctly.
I guess we can wrap the discussion up with saying that Dragon Age will run at 1920x1200 with all options maxed out without noticable slowdowns during normal game operation with a system of these or better specifications:

- Intel core i5 750 at 2.66GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 965 at 3.4 GHz
- 4GB RAM on 64-bit systems, 3GB RAM on 32-bit systems
- Ati 5850/NVidia GTX465

I'm currently debating whether to switch from PS3 to PC, but all I have is a laptop, and I'm thus not sure whether my specs will be enough to run the game. It doesn't help that I'm pretty much computer illiterate. I have a Sony Vaio, couple of years old, runs under Windows 7. Here are some specs:

Processor: Intel ® Core ™2 CPU T5500 @ 1,66GHz      1,67GHz
RAM: 2,00GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400

I read somewhere that the minimum specs were the following:

OS: Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1
Processor: Intel Core 2 DUO @ 1.4 GHz/AMD Athlon64 X2 @ 1.8 GHz
Memory: 1 GB
Hard Drive: 20 GB Free
Video Memory: 128 MB (nVidia GeForce 6600/ATI Radeon X850)
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
DirectX: 9.0c
Keyboard & Mouse
DVD Rom Drive

From what I can tell, I fit the bill, but I just wanted to make sure before I shell out the cash and start moving stuff on my lappy to free some space. So...verdict?

@Nilfalasiel:

Both the Intel T5500 @ 1,66GHz and the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 are at the low end of the system requirements. Also, for Windows 7 the 2GB of RAM is a bit small for running Dragon Age well. If Dragon Age accepts the video card you will probably be running the lowest resolutions with the lowest settings. In short I expect that the PS3 will produce a much better picture quality and gaming experience than this laptop is capable of.

Alright, thanks. It's a bit disappointing, as I'm aware that some of the bugs of the PS3 version have been fixed by mods on the PC, which is why I wanted to switch. But I guess that, barring some expensive upgrades or getting another PC, it won't be possible.
