Do you play as female or male?

There's already an abundance of male warrior characters. I just like the image of a badass warrior woman who can kick seven shades of sh*t out of every male party member. Plus you get Sten's classic 'I don't understand, you look like a woman' dialogue.

Heck, I tried one once, and promptly lost him in a melee-free-for-all. I couldn't quite figure out who and where the heck my male PC was. Lasted only for a moment, but still.

But in DAO I started my first character as a woman. But that doesn't mean I identify with the character. She's a sturdy dwarf and I am a skinny tall person irl. I have short red-ish brown hair with side fringe while my dwarven woman has golden hair in a tight, small ponytail. ...and she's a helluva lot better at kicking ass than I am!
I have created a male dwarf too but don't play him much yet. He's still stuck in Redcliffe, first scenario. I intend to create characters to eventually romance Alistair and Morrigan, but it's not on the top of the list right now.
Edit:
YAAAAAY! My data has been uploaded (had account issues). If you look, yes I have two people exactly the same with the same name. The first will be deleted eventually. I am doing this for personal reasons.

You don't HAVE to have a romance in order to complete DA...

Very good point. I personally don't get the problem with guys not being able to romance a male npc despite their character being female. It's not like the guy player is doing something with the male npc. But to each their own.uber_shnitz wrote...
Just a quick argument to those saying playing the opposite sex as you is disturbing...

Then, I play with complete opposites of me, just to satisfy my curiosity.

Nice point of view. I estimate you so much !!!
I have told several times that was not my intention to offend someone if I don't wanna romance male character with my female characters.. And if so, I have already apologized for it.
In past games, where I had no options of woman on woman romances I agreed however games and I simply ended them without romances...For sure I was not crying for this!
I think anyone is free to decide by his own way... as devs allow us to do this...
I believe that, until everyone respects every chooses that people do, don't write offensive sentences in forums or similar, everyone is free to play his characters with sexaulity he/she likes more, and is free to decide if his/her character will be eterosexual, omosexual or bisexual... and no one have to sentence him/her for this. Just reciprocal respect..it's the only way..I think it's not so difficult...at least to me...

I haven't had any same-sex relationships, however. I figured my City Elf would go after the only other elf in the group (Zev) or Leliana, cause she's a lady. But as I played with the PC, I came to the conclusion that she's more a human-hater than strictly a man-hater. For me, romance and relationships depends on the character, not on my morals as a player (which happen to be loose).

I tend to create female characters first and seem to like my female characters more in any game I play. I tend to end up with an equal amount of male and female characters by the end though.

Or maybe I'm just more attracted to Alistair than to Morrigan or Leliana...hmmmm.

I played through DA:O with characters of both genders and they were both equally engaging/rewarding experiences.

I actually think I like the fit of a female PC a bit better for the storyline, but I'm fickle and usually end up wanting to try something different 1/2 way through. My male war however was such a beast I never looked back!
I know the feeling. I remade my female elf mage at least 5x over... maybe one of these days I'll actually finish the game with her!DrunkDeadman wrote...
I always created male characters in RPGs, so when DA came out I decided to create a female to make things a bit different. Man, I grew so attached to her, that after I beat the game, I started a new game with exactly the same character, because for some reason, It didn't feel right when I was playing as anyone else I created.

I'm a woman who more often than not plays male PCs. I honestly don't get why people find it so strange. Maybe it's because I don't internalize my characters as "me", but as their own little entities. In that way its much easier to play as someone totally different than myself.

Thtats pretty much the way I go about RPGs where I can create a character.
I'm a guy, but I play both genders in games because like you said, its not an extension of me. I see it more like a character in a movie or a book.
