I'm a woman who more often than not plays male PCs. I honestly don't get why people find it so strange. Maybe it's because I don't internalize my characters as "me", but as their own little entities. In that way its much easier to play as someone totally different than myself.

I played through DA:O with characters of both genders and they were both equally engaging/rewarding experiences.

I guess most roleplay..and by that I mean..they become the character they are playing.   For me its easier that way I guess.

I'm male, I play both males and females.

Mostly depends upon the game which gender I prefer, if I prefer one at all.

Of course, sometimes I just roleplay myself, then I'm male elf mage. Not that I would be elf or mage in reallife (well ... at least not that I know of), but thats what I like most.

Females have usually a much larger selection of fanmade portraits if you look for them. Not an issue with newer games any more.

Males, on the other hand, usually have no trouble getting alternative fanmade voices, if the game has them. No issue any more with newer games, at least as far as I know.

BG, BG2: Almost always played male here because of the romances.

PS:T: Guess ...

IWD1: Never made it out of starter town. After playing so many DnD 3.x games, playing an AD&D game just where no fun at all any more. I dont remember my group either.

IWD2: Male Drow Sorcerer solo. Somehow, playing this game solo was the only way I really enjoyed it. The Beholder was unfair though. I could only beat it by using AI errors. What really stopped me was a bug though.

Fallout 2: Tried female ... I think they got some kind of advantage from the rulesystem thats why I prefered it. Got it for "free" with a pc mag, and its a good thing, because after two or three hours of playing I finally was fed up with this stupid fight system.

Wizardy 8: Females got a lot of advantages, so I went all female group. Second worst rulesystem after the Elder Scrolls, though, and I really hated having to fight every 3 meters, and getting NEW groups of opponents while you are already in a fight, too. Took me a long time to actually stop playing, though.

Gothic: Guess ... and I didnt played for long either, the game was a major disappointment in EVERY respect.

Morrowind: After a lot of testing, I went female breton atronarch mage spec with endurance and luck and all major and minor skills where non-magic so I could reach maxlevel. Thats because only the third female Breton portrait and one of the male Redguard portraits where any attractive. The male Redguard turned out to be really boring though, because my Warrior where at maximum power (Heavy Armor, Shield and Sword maxed) extremely quickly.

KotoR1: Played male for romances. Tried multiple times evil female guardian, too, though, just to kill Carth. Never succeeded. Today I guess you have to play goodhearted first to win him, and then only switch at the last instance to turn evil. Quite stupid though and you cant turn maximum evil this way either so you'll be underpowered.

The Temple of Elemental Evil: Best combat system in a game ever. My group was mixed gender. Sadly no story, so I only played it once. Never picked up any NPCs because they where completely annoying.

KotoR2: Only played it once, as the male Jesus-face, which was the least worst of them all. Yes, player models where really awful in this game. No romance either. Meh.

Vampire Bloodlines: Male Toreador. Also enjoyed female Malkavian, but she was much too nimble in fights.

The Fall: I think I played female until this bugfest managed to finally make me stop playing ... after 2 or 3 hours total playtime. What a waste of money, and I already tried the "improved" version. Dont want to know how many bugs where in the original.

The Witcher: Guess ... why is it, if you're forced to a character, said character is almost always male, and the kind of male I dont like ? The book character is much more sympathetic, by the way.

Oblivion: Went to female Breton again. Habit from Morrowind and considering the awful amount of work you need to make a face, female was the prefered choice, too. Rest of the game was big fun, but the awful rulesystem never fails to kill the mood.

Dragon Age: Happy to be able to play both genders as I wish except for the romances. Even happier theres a lesbian romance so I can play female with female romance too. I might even try female with male romance someday, dunno. Right now I'm deeply annoyed I missed my chance to get Blood Mage spec and lost motivation to play it any more. Also the imbalances of the game can be frustrating - the rulesystem isnt really well balanced yet.

I'm male playing as male warrior as male suits the class. When I decide to try a different class, it would probably be a female mage, for the same reason.

[...] Brienne of Tarth is a great example of a female warrior who would be at home in Dragon Age.

Eww. Why do female warrior have to be UGLY ?

I rather go for Xena or Red Sonja, thank you.

Or my female Highelf Paladin in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Most beautiful character I've ever played ! I usually deeply hate Paladins, but for a female Highelf on a Unicorn ... that just rocks.

Interesting question.  I'm female and I always play female when there is a choice.  Morrowind, Masquerade, ME, Oblivion, BG, Fallout 3, you name it, but often I feel I'm just a male in drag, the afterthought, as it were.  This is the only game I can recall where I have actually felt privileged to be playing a female, where I have options as a female that males do not have and where my character's womanliness is acknowledged and recognised (although it could do with a few more dresses, it would be nice to hang out in a dress at camp when I'm not on duty...).

Of course, there are a few games where the default is female, No One Lives Forever, comes to mind, but they are pretty scarce and often the femaleness feels superficial.

The only game where I've been really happy inside a male skin has been The Witcher, where I really dug Geralt of Rivia and played him as the male w***e that he is!:P

:lol:SO know what you mean! Girls do get the short end of the stick where gaming is concerned. To the guys reading, imagine if you almost always had to play a female character. You're never really able to identify with the character the same as if it was of your own sex. And even when us girls do get the option to play as a female it is more often than not designed and written for by men; the result usually being  a highly sexual, practically naked, yet rather masculine character.

I feel closer to my char in DA than I have with any other female char. Maybe it's great writing or maybe it's just Alistair. He knows how to treat a gal. :kissing:;)

Being a guy is great, i'm a guy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year so when I play Dragon age I tend to play with females, just to be different! I've played twice and both have been with females, female human mage/Warrior.

I suppose it depends on the character, I could never imagine playing a female dwarf for example lol

Plus playing as a girl I get to lez it up with Leliana :-D

The only game I've ever run a female character in is Resident evil 5. All of my D&D, Oblivion, and Dragon Age characters are male. I'm female. Go figure.

I'm male and my 1st playthru is as Human Male Warrior Noble, because I wanted to experience the default storyline first. 2nd playthru will most likely be Female Human Mage. I'm going to try to experience the game 50-50, gender-wise.

I don't see any problems of playing a PC of opposite gender. I watch movies and read books starring female main characters. I can get immersed in those too. Why not games? It's like saying every single person who watched Lion King is into bestiality with cats.

I'm stuck to male as it does not feel right for me to roleplay a female, but then again it feels overly wrong everytime I make a decision that I cannot stand for.

I'm female and I play either gender, depending on the game. I've done several playthroughs of DA using both genders. I like that the game is a different experience for each gender.

If I want something good to look at, I play as a female.
If I want just pretend to be a great warrior, I play as a male.

(Yeah yeah, females can be great warriors too... Whatever. :D)

I always play as a Female. I AM a female and understand the mindset better. I tried a City Elf male under my daughter's urgings and just couldn't get into playing him. I romanced both Leliana and Morrigan for the achievements and then deleted him. I just don't like the way the males move/look in the game and have an easier time making gorgeous female PCs.

The only thing I seem to have a problem with is stepping away from my personal way of selecting comments/replies when in a conversation with someone even though my characters are, what you call, their own enteties. I find it very hard to be extreme in either way. Like, very rude to the point where people start to dislike my character, or devote my character too much into a certain party members beliefs, that it starts to annoy another party member.
But that could be the Swede in me talking. We have a word - 'lagom' - which basically means "not too little and not too much". Or maybe I'm just a diplomatic gamer. :P

I always play females. I've tried playing males a few times and I just... can't. In games where there's no choice (like Gothic games, The Witcher), I'll obviously play males but it never feels right.

Both. Don't have any problem with playing a different sex character - being much taller than average I'm even going to try playing as a dwarf next! Mind you, haven't got to the "romance" side of it with a female PC as yet....

I am female and most of the time I play as female characters. I'm glad we have the choice to play either gender in most games these days.

depends... I normally do male initially because its easier for me to relate to a male character. But I give females a try sometimes, and I do prefer to spend my time staring at a female ass for 30 hours rather than a male ass.

however, i find it hard to romance other characters if I play a female.

(I didn't even want to romance anyone in ME2 but it just kinda happened. Garrus and Tali were my favorite pals from ME1, so I fell into Tali very easily)
