I generally play as a male but I have given playing a female role a go. I gave it a lot of thought designed a character, it was a rouge with a back story, the whole nine yards. But I could only get through one complete run through of the whole NWN2 series. I enjoyed it but I'm no good at the role playing side of it.
I just don't have the imagination for it I suppose?
Do you play as female or male?

I play characters based on story possibilities. I played a female Cousland because story wise, it seemed more fulfilling. I'm now playing a male dwarven noble because well... it makes sense. *shrugs*

If you decide to play a city elf, the female role has a bit more impact. Just FYI.
On the other hand, dwarven male nobles have the greatest opportunity for hanky panky in the game.

I'm female, but I tend to play male characters. With most games, I think the story has been build up for male characters. Take KotOR where the male LIs are just way more interesting. So generally, my first playthrough is with a male character. I was pleasantly surprised however when I picked up a female elf in DA:O and discovered how much fun it was. (Really, you get to mock the males for being scared. Awesome.) So with DA:O I find that I enjoy playing both genders equally.
I'm actually about to start a new game and I can't make up my mind as to go male or female.

I tend to play few games, but the ones I do play I play many times.
So there's some fun in trying it with both male and female characters.
It's also somewhat important to me that my character doesn't look goofy. For example, I think it's difficult in DAO to get a male human to look even semi-intelligent. On the other hand, the default male elf looks pretty cool as a mage.
In those games where there is spoken dialogue from the PC, I also care a lot about the voice acting. For example, I think Jennifer Hale did a great job in Mass Effect, so I have had more playthroughs as female Shepard than male Shepard. I guess I played the game too much, because I can't remember how many playthroughs I've actually done

And a quick note for those squeamish about those playing the opposite gender: This isn't an MMO. I know with MMOs, whether its WoW/EQ2/AoC, there's a stigma about dudes playing females. Heck, I know I stick to male characters, cause when I'm doing all the work in developing a character, I'd end up making my females seem... manly.
With DAO, it's simply like an interactive movie. Same with Mass Effect, or games like it. You simply dictate how the movie flows.
And definitely, certain origins are meant I think for certain genders.
I think that's why each origin has a specific concept art in some ways. Theoretically, if you go by those concept arts...
Males would be Human Noble, Dwarven Noble, Dalish Elf, and Elven Mage. Females would be Dwarf Commoner, City Elf, and Human mage. That's my guestimate. Although, the rabid Alistair fanbase kinda makes Human Female make more sense, with all the extra character development the mods put in.

I'm not sure I understand why certain origins should be more suited for males or females.

I play both.
Though my first character was a handsome, good guy strong warrior. Yummy. I just wanted some eyecandy.
And no I don't see certain origins being more suited for genders either. More interesting yeah but more suited? No.

I never really figured it mattered, as my husband says 'If I can get a trophy for it I'll run it.' Whether it's male or female the point is enjoying the game and if your inclined, getting the trophies/achievements. I run a Dwarf, warrior who is female, but I'll def be running a male later on just for achievements.

Probably because there -are- differences in how your character is treated.
From what I hear, City Elf for example, is a bit more rewarding if you play a female.

i'm male and i play both, but my most satisfying playthroughs have definitely been with female characters. i found the same was true for me with fallout 3 and demon's souls as well. i guess i just like a heroine. probably watched too much buffy as a teenager.

Greetings, all! I am male in RL, and while I've just started with this game as a male, I have played both in other RP games. Now that I'm getting into the game I am becoming intrigued by the possibilities of the different character and party member variations, I may start a game here as a female too, if only for comparison.

I am female but play as both male and female, as I wanted to find out how the starter stories altered depending on sex of character, the only one that does is the city elf storyline and by only a small degree.
I prefer playing as a female noble as they can marry Alistair, but I play a male dalish elf, I have played both male and female casteless dwarves and am currently playing a female noble dwarf.
I have also had both male and female characters have relationships with Leliana and Zevran.

People who have a problem with someone playing as the opposite sex need to grow up.
That said, I'm a female, and when given a choice, I usually play as a female. It feels more immersive. However, sometimes I play as a male, to get achievements or the full scope of the story.
Of course, I play as males in Assassin's Creed and the Witcher, because I don't really have a choice, but I don't really mind.

Despite being a male both my cannon Warden and Hawke are female. In fact I've had Origins since Christmas last year and have had nine female charaters and two males, Let's just say I like the Leliana romance:)

I'm female and I tend to play both. It depends on the story... it used to feel to me that the stories were built around a male hero, and you could change the window dressing, as it were, but it didn't make any difference to the story. I feel like that's becoming less the case and female characters are a bit easier to roleplay without falling into dreadful stereotypes. (Baldur's Gate II Anomen romance, I'm looking at YOU. "Of course, Anomen, I'd love to hear you talk on and on about yourself and stroke your ego. That's what women are supposed to do, right?")
I'm playing a male mage now, but I'm already planning my next run through with a female human warrior, so I can give Al some romancin'.

In DAO I tend to favor the warrior classes as well as DW rogue and I always make them males. Only time I ever played as a female in DAO was the only time I played as a mage. It's weird because in the Mass Effect games I can play as a female just as much as I play as a male but in Dragon Age I just feel more like playing as a male. Of course the fact that I am male may have something to do with that.

I'm a girl so I like playing a female. I played as a male Warden in DAO once and have a few Ser Hawkes in DA2 though. I usually avoid RPGs that don't have the option to play as a female, except for awesome ones like Planescape: Torment or Deux Ex.
