But as mentioned before, depends of the kind of char i'm making:
For fast sneaky rogues, diplomatic characters, archers and good aligned mages i tend to go a female char.
Now for big-bad HEAVILY armored scar-covered intimidating warriors or evil necromancers (if available) i will go for male characters.

Nothing better than watching a sexy girl fighting.

I wasn't all that impressed with the BG romances (played them anyway tho) but I'm guessing they might have improved on them for DA:O - haven't got that far yet.

First playthrough - female city elf - was on purpose because I liked the origin and I think that this origin needs to be played with a female character.
Second playthrough - female human mage - was more a coincidence. I decided spontaneously to play as a mage and the only ready to use mage character which was left from the character generator sessions was female.
Third playthrough is a male human warrior, again on purpose and I have also a male dwarf on the list.

I've only played males in DA up till now (also male IRL), but I've played quite a lot of female characters in the past, even on dedicated RP servers. It feels a little strange to RP a female as a male though, especially if you get hit on by another character (male) who is probably male IRL as well xD. I now know how all those poor girls must feel when they're going out at night
why don't buy a dress, wig, and move to greenwhich village and get the whole thing over with

That said, female playthroughs have interesting options.

i find guys who play female characters rather disturbing......
Why? In any RPG it's just picking options from a list. It's not like one dresses in a full ballgown and shrieks in a falsetto.

I'm female and my first character was female, the second male, the next will be female again (city elf), and then probably I'll play another male (mage).

I didn't realize that so many people were still so close-minded this time and age. It's called roleplaying. Hell, I once LARPed a werewolf and yet I don't really feel the need to run off to a big forest and start howling at the full moon. I might call the rest of my pack to hunt you down and eat you as an afternoon snack though...

I toon'd a chick in this Korean MMO I played on and off for about 3 months. People were always giving me stuff and offering to help me with quests. It was HILARIOUS! I'd walk around and called myself "the Princess" and other people actually used the nickname. By the time I quit (MMOs can't hold my interest for long), I was the elected leader of a whole nation of clans in this game. (200+ players). LOL
I did that too. worked insanely well. The character's name was "Tootsie" Should have been a red flag there but I guess it went over people's heads. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tootsie

i think a female warrior would look odd though....
lol you're being sexist against yourself.
Personally I like playing female warriors. Most of the female characters I create in RPGs are warriors. I like that "Joan of Arc" archetype of a noble female heroine in full plate battling the forces of evil.
How is someone's opinion sexist if this opinion isn't based on sexism?
Women can be warriors but their appearnce just doesn't really add up to swinging around a sword weighing more then they do.

close-minded would be if people stated you should not be allowed to do something or prevented from doing something becasue of your personal choice
I'm talking about facts as in if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, has a bill and feathers then it more then likely is a......

First play is as the choices I would make, so Male.
After that I choose how I want to aproach the game from diffrent prespectives, so could be male or female.
Im not an elf ethier, why not ask why we all dont play humans?
