Do you play as female or male?

However, I do sometimes play a female PC, and have just started one (Rogue).

How EXACTLY do you define "pure heterosexual?"

If you want to put sexual orientation on a linear scale, I'm literally at the tip of the hetrosexual end. Guy-on-guy literally creeps me out just thinking of it (I'm grimacing while typing this).
That said, the sexual orientation of other readers is no real business of mine, and I don't believe in labeling and treating them as less than people just for that.

Really? I don't think that's because you're super-straight. In studies of sexuality it's been found that super-straight guys are typically turned on by either heterosexual or lesbian porn, and the second may be even more effective. On the other hand, I'm not aware that gay men have much interest in lesbian porn or vice versa. And going by the sheer volume of slash fiction written by women, women frequently find male homoeroticism erotic. So I think that's more of a personal preference on your part than due to sexual orientation.SupidSeep wrote...

I'm female but I usually play male characters. I'm strange like that.
My GM in LoTRO was a woman playing male toon. Her husband had all female toons though. My gaming partner (a guy irl) had a female toon too.
We girls played tanks and guys were healers/support.
Since the game has pretty decent voice chat we were all babbling all the time..... had few funny moments when we would let some guy thinking our boys were girls join our party.

I have probably created the most beautiful female character for this game and believe me, as a straight guy, it is far more enjoyable watching her than it would be with some male character.
Some guys commented it is awkward playing a female character due to the love scenes and dialogue. I suppose it can be but that is due to the perspective you take on when playing the game.
My perspective: I am the invisible man who has the ability to influence characters. Simple as that.

When you watch a movie, play a game or read a book, does the hero have to match your gender for you to enjoy it?
No, but I enjoy it much much more if the hero does match my gender.
I just cant get into a game when I try to play male. It feels awkward. It feels wrong on too many levels. It creeps me out.
I have to develop some kind of bond with my characters to play them and I cant develop anything alike with male characters. I simply cant.
But, as I already said, my main MMO gaming partner is a man who plays female characters in lot of occasions and I never found it wierd. I find it completely normal. And no, he is not ****** or even bi.

To all those who just play one kind of a character, give it a try to make another different one, what do you have to loose? After all what's the point in a RPG if you just play "yourself".

I gave it a try. Several times. It was my worst experience in any game and didnt last very long.
I like games, even RPG games but I lack ability to be "somebody else". My true character always pops out at some point and screws all my effort no matter how I try. We are all different people you know.

Indeed, and it's good that way. If you tried it and didn't like it, there's no point in doing it. I'd just advise everyone to at least try it once, for I feel that's a nice side effect of a RPG, getting to see things from a different point of view, for example as someone mentioned the way npcs react to another race or gender.Cybercat999 wrote...

While I do know what you mean and I'm sure most do too... that's not a good argument per se, as one could easily answer that magazine you are reading is just paper.ct1615 wrote...

In fact, I won't bother with any game that won't allow me to play a female character. Loved Fable 2, didn't bother with Fable because you could only play as a male. Just not interesting to me whatsoever.

I don't sit down and go over the whole "I want to be a sexy looking girl with double D's, two katana's and I have to be a god before level 2" I always play as "Good" first, then if I feel like it has any replay value I make an "Evil" toon. I rarely go for a "Neutral" And in all this I make the pick on which sex I'll play based on what I think looks the most kick-ass.

Unfortunately, I'll never get to do the gay romance in DAO because I can't stand the character you can do it with. Absolutely can-not-stand. I threw him out of my party as soon as I could get him back to camp. (I don't want to kill him or send him away, because I'm into constructing a full group portrait of all the characters in my party change screen.)
I still await a game that has a M/M romance option where the romanceable character is actually attractive to me. Although, kudos for the devs for stepping in the right direction.
I saw a mod somewhere that would make all the romanceable male characters bisexual, but the installations instructions for it were too complicated for me.
Oh well.
