as with games like oblivion, in dragon age, i found accumulating gold (at the start of the game), quite difficult.
i'm about three quarters of the way through the game, and now have 180 gold, but that's because i've hardly bought anything.

all i've spent money on, is arrows (to start with i had leliana using just ranged weapons and went through tonnes of them), a skill tome, and maybe 6 or 8 recipe/trap/poison plans (all under 2 gold each)  and some ingredients/flasks etc, for crafting, making poison and traps. maybe the odd lyrium potion when i can find them for sale...

since getting wardens keep dlc, and the storage chest, i have been keeping hold of weapons and armour that looks as though it could be useful to kit out the whole party for the last battle (i tend to use the same 3 companions through game, so not kitted out most companions since getting them)
but i am still selling all the junk/ duplicate items, i pick up..

so is this normal for a play through??

how much gold did you accumulate?

what kind of things did you spend your gold on?

should i blow the gold on buying skill/talent or attribute tomes?  (there are several in shops that i have not bought)

or buy special armour and weapons?   (any suggestions)
(it seems that you collect better things than you can buy??)

should i save the gold for something i'll need further in the game??

opinions and suggestions are very welcome :D

In Origins, gold is very hard to come by. Unless you do something like make Potent Lyrium Potions, you'll never have enough gold to buy every one of the really expensive items you see in the stores. Also, keep in mind that the really, really expensive items are generally far above and beyond anything you'll find in random loot. You'll never find a better Maul than the Chasind Great Maul, or a better belt than the Andruil's Blessing.

As for arrows, don't bother with them. If you pick some up in loot, feel free to give them to Leliana to use, but don't go out of your way to buy more. She can do just fine without them.

If I were in your position, I'd probably start by picking up all the Tomes I've skipped. Then, I'd see if any of the really expensive items would work for me, and grab them.

You don't need to have arrows equipped to use your bow.

I manage to aquire all the top gear and Tomes for the Warden, and I only use the Asunder exploit for the bonus100 gold. No lyrium crafting is needed, but I imagine it could be useful with the ability to respec skills.

I sell all the bolts found; crossbows appear to be bugged currently. And Lesser Health poltices are too light for my needs, so I sell these, too. Avoid the large purchases for NPC's; save the gold for the Warden. There are plenty of good items found that can fill their kits.

There are a few quests that can net you a good bit of gold if you are willing to play it a little shady too. I'm at about 350 gold now and haven't crafted a thing. Granted, I'm about 3/4 of the way through the pre-landsmeet portion (Did Redcliff, Dwarves, the Circle) of the game.

thanks for the reply :)

at the start of the game, before i got the hang of tactics, fighting as a party, companions, and leveling up, i saw lelianas skill tree was archery, and so built on it.
as she was using a bow all the time, she went through arrows as fast as i collected them.
and so thats why i wasted so much cash buying them.

once i started learning to play the game, understanding everything, i built her up as a dualist with 2 brilliant daggers. she only used the bow now when the closest enemies are defeated and there are ranged enemies still alive.
and i have hundereds of every type of arrows and bolts now lol

and good tip about the tomes, thanks, i bought 2 from the brecilian forest merchant 2day, and got a 'talent' point instead of spell or attribute. i'll be using my gold to buy up all the ones i have left on the shelves :)

i do have quite a bit of 'kit' stored at wardens keep.
i need to take each of the companions over there with me and sort them out properly instead of trying to remember what they already have, and guessing on what to carry to the camp for them lol

thanks for the advice :)

yes, the first half of the game i tried to be nice and didn't ask for, or bully rewards out of people, worrying about losing approval of the companions.
but then i bought the feastday gifts, and now, pretty much act how i want (and have had some nice rewards in the proccess lol) and shower any frowning faces with gifts ;) lol

thanks :)

Making your own potions is a lot cheaper than buying them if you have a need for potions. Spending money on Tomes will strengthen your characters.

i do :)
i keep every ingredient i collect and craft potions every visit to wardens keep.
and now i have all 4 'crafting' slots filled, i'll start to buy more recipies.

my problem is with lyrium potions.
i hardly seem to collect any lyrium dust, so brewing those is rare. so i buy every lyrium potion i come accross.
with myself, (a mage), and wynn, always in my party, we seem to go through a huge amount of lyrium potions.

and yes, thanks, i intend of doing a 'shopping' run, and buying all the tomes i've left on shelves ;)

thanks for the reply

Read the money making guide, and for Leilana yeah you dont need arrows you have a infinete ammount lol. Advice though Leilana is a superior Cunning based Assassin then she is as the character she is setup as. I like to make her a duel wielder but you can certainly just pump Cunning as her main attribute and only get enough dex for skills and make sure to get lethality and she will do great damage and her Bard songs will be improved greatly since they are cun based. I like Assassin just because its Cun based as well.

You need to max out the Herbalist tree in order to make Potent Lyrium Potions.

I prefer Liliana as a Ranger. That way you have a 5 party team.

I've been thinking, and now me edd urts.

If you spam Lyrium potions surely this means you can just run around the various merhants buying up all the best items you otherise couldn't afford for all your party members. Wouldn't doing so turn your party into Superman? Was this deliberately designed for the game, or is it considered a cheat?

Probably both

There are some blatant cheats for money though like the Golems Memeries DLC thing in Redcliff for ifinete gold basicaly.   Just remeber Merchants do have a limit to the number of items they can carry and when you sell a item it adds to that count and if you go over that limit it destroys your save file. You cant save anymore because your savegames are corrupted. Basicaly you need to sell to several differant merchants to maximise profits.

Don't spend money on arrows, sell the ones you find in dungeons and chests.

Also if you know the Asunder quest, at the end, position everyone in your party in a square formation evenly spaced around the pedestal at the end, pause the game, select each character and have them each Activate the pedestal, and you'll get the dialogue to choose to fight or get a reward four times in a row. Choose the reward all four times and you've got a clean 100 sovereigns.

I always blow the gold on every tome I can find.  My thinking on that that once I get past Landsmeet, other than buying a buttload of arrows/bolts in prep for the rooftop battle, what am I going to use it for?  It's not like you get to take it with you.

Now granted, 15g or so may seem a little expensive for a skill, but if you sell everything you find (I do, at least everything but gifts), you'll run out of tomes long before you run out of gold.  Plus if you already have Cailan's armor and Juggernaut and 2 sets of Wade's leather, how much more stuff is there that you need to buy?

If I'm going to end up on a slab at game's end, I'm going to do so buffed and broke.

I've almost completed the Deep Roads and I have 150G or more. That's enough to buy the 2nd Wade armour, Caillins Coat and some tomes. I have a shedful of arrows I found which I can also sell, being that my Rogue is a DW. I don't really see the point in selling lyrium. There's also a quest I haven't done yet for lyrium which should bring in more dollars. Money comes thick and fast towards the end. All I now need is enough cash to afford to make loads of lyrium and health packs to get me through to the end and I'm done.
