Hiya,

After installing DaO onto my PC, it seems to have triggered a couple of problems. FIrstly, after installing, my computer isn't reading or identifying any discs! I've tried double-clicking on the DVD Drive via the "Computer" window to try and boot it up but it just causes Windows to freeze completely. I just got a new DVD Driver put in today because I thought it was the issue, but it isn't! (D'oh!) Secondly, my computer isn't shutting down properly, I have to force it off by holding down the on/off button, which I hate doing! Now you're probably thinking that it's a hardware or software issue, but it isn't! I only JUST bought this PC and got DaO to go with it because I've heard good things about it, my PC was running fine up until I installed this game.

I got lucky and the computer managed to read the disc so I thought I'd take full advantage and play the game for a bit. The game was all running fine up until I got to my first cut-scene, the characters weren't speaking at all, or even moving their mouths! You can tell there's meant to be dialogue because of their strange hand/facial gestures. Also, if I were to mouse over a character during gameplay, the text that's supposed to identify a person comes up as (an example) "0100f_Guard"...And I'm no genious when it comes to NPC's, but neither of those things sound right.

After playing the game just briefly and enountering that, I assumed that reinstalling the game would be the way to go! So I did, and it was again successful, BUT, after having finished reinstallation, the "Auto-Configure" (or whatever it's called) froze up and wouldn't complete it's tiny download - I'm talking about the one where you just install the game and you get redirected to the Configuration window and it attempts to choose settings itself based on your computers specs. So that never finished choosing settings and I couldn't appear to skip that at all. (It's strange though because I didn't have that issue the first time I installed it.)

The problem I hate the most though is the fact that my computer is just struggling to identify and read discs / shutting down the way it oughtta. Please keep in mind that the computer was running just fine in those aspects before I installed DaO.

Here are my specs:

- Windows 7 Home Premium x64
- Intel Core i7 860
- 4G DDR3 1333 Ram
- 1G ATI 5770 Graphics Card

Cheers.

Could partly be a memory problem. I noticed you only have 4 GB of Ram. My computer has the same configuration, but with 16GB DDR3 Ram. I think I have the same graphics card, but I'm not really sure. I know its an ATI Radeon with 1GB of dedicated ram.

As for the disc read problem, I was also having this issue, but only with the DA Origins disk after installation and a reboot. The funny thing is that my computer recognizes my Awakenings disk and starts the game fine with that. Another solution is to download the game using the EA Download Manager. This will allow your game to launch from the hard drive, no disk required. Download the EA manager and make sure your game is registered. Then you can download and install the software.

I fear that I must disabuse you of some bad assumptions.

1.  "Newness" is no proof of anything in particular, other than the length of time any warranty has left to run.

2a.  Had there been any repetition of symptoms similar to some you describe, I would have seen that, so most  of your optical drive's problems are unrelated to the game.

2b.  Your PC's dislike of shutting itself down properly is also unique, and cannot be blamed on the game.

3.  I don't know how far you took your uninstallation procedure, since you made no mention of it, but some of what you mention sounds as if there was leftover detritus from the first install.  One of the things that the Configuration Utility does is copy and alter some game startup files, but what you said seems to indicate conflicts from some of those still in place may be intterfering with the completion of the reinstall.

Regretfully, I cannot assist you with 2a or 2b.  Your system builder may be where you need to go with those.

Good luck.

No offense, Patriciachr34, but there is no way its a RAM issue if there is 4GB in use. 4GB should be more than enough to run DAO and wouldn't cause these problems unless one of the RAM sticks is defective (which is doubtful). I am running only 2GB of RAM and the game runs perfectly fine. It COULD be a virtual memory issue, but that's unlikely.

As for the optical drive issue, updating the drivers may help if you haven't already done that.. And it could just be a faulty PC (since you said it was brand new, it sounds to me like there may be manufacturing defects involved). I agree with Gorath on this one. Contact the manufacturer and see about getting a diagnostic check and repair or a complete replacement. Hope that helps a little at least.

Neither of the above...

All the symptoms suggets a virus/malware my friend...ignore patriarch, they have no clue what they are tlaking about, and Im suprised Goraph (who is knows his stuff very well) didnt pick up on it.

Boot into safe mode and then do a full scan....would aslo suggest you pick up the freeware utility called HijackThis....if you dont know how to use it pm me and Ill take you through it and you can then pm the results and Ill go through it for you.

and if your wondering why safe mode, many malware/viruses implant themselves into core directory files than in normal operating mode windows will not virus scanners etc to access :)

Let us know how you get on.

But....you say JUST bought, but was running fine before installing...which suggests you had it a while before installing DA?

Where did it come from? Was Windaz pre-installed? Were the updates up to date?.....

Again...your last paragraph.....

The problem I hate the most though is the fact that my computer is just struggling to identify and read discs / shutting down the way it oughtta. Please keep in mind that the computer was running just fine in those aspects before I installed DaO.

Suggests it is not brand new and you have not JUSt got it.....

Do a full and complete virus sweep...and not with Norton or Mcafee.

Truth of the matter is that the damages from viral assaults show up fairly infrequently in game forums any more compared to a couple of years ago, and when you stop seeing it for awhile, you start to hope that end-users and their protections have the upper hand once and for all.

However, far too many brand new PCs used to be shipped with undetected malware already included; the manufacturers weren't always scrupulous about their own security precautions, so that could well be the case today.

I'm glad someone remembered the bad old days better than I did!

I did the same thing, Gorath.. I assumed it was virus free since it was 'brand new', but that very well could be the case.. Good catch, Mavi!

Also, as a final thought for you...

Win7 also uses Superfetch like Vista did (a little more stable though) unless you have disabled it (unlikely)...

Be interested to know what your ram useage is like before trying to play and during play....its a long shot that superfetch is not allocating ram correctly, but still a possibility.

still go with a virus tbh with your other symptoms :)

Thanks for suggestions. I managed to uninstall DaO and destroyed anything related. I've scanned my PC for any faults or viruses, everythings in order apparently. I checked to see if I could update my GFX Driver (via hardware properties, not Internet) and it thinks I have the latest. Version: 8.732.0.0

So I've managed to uninstall the game but typically, it's still got the same issues (my PC that is). For those of you wondering, I set up my comp, put software on it then installed DaO, in the same day I got my computer.

Right now I'm just considering wiping it and starting over. Or I might just take it back to get it looked at (again). Or I might even just have them replace the whole thing, I dunno! Anyway, this is all unrelated to the game now, thanks again for suggestions.

P.S. What's the purpose for Disc 2? It comes in some EA cover thing, I put it in after Disc 1 thinking I had to in order complete installation but it said I had the wrong disc in. What's on that disc?

Cheers. And enjoy the fact that you can play this awesome game, unlike failures like myself! Happy gaming. :)

If you are in the UK, the European Edition has multiple other languages on the second disk.  You only need the first one, in English.

Never depend on Microsoft for current mainboard or video drivers.  They are often months, even years, behind.  The proper video drivers are found at either ATI / AMD's downloads site, or nVIDIA's.  If you have a laptop, you have other problems beyond the scope of any ordinary game forum to fully deal with.  EA doesn't support any laptops for their games.

Australia here. And no, I don't use laptops for games, completely inadequate for gaming if you ask me. I'll check out those sites to see what's the latest. Would there be any other drivers that you'd reccomend I update?
