It is getting out of hand.
Why is it people want to have romances with everything non human? Like Garrus say in his romance dialogue "You can hit something a little closer to home" or something along those lines?
Ok human - asari, fair enough - That is like human - elf to compare with fantasy settings, but have you ever seen a human - dwarf pairing? Physiology is just to obscure to see it happen, why would Garrus ever want to be with a human for instance? Is he that desperate being a not a very good turian?
Or the other way around, the whole excuse "I want someone I can trust" is just to cheap - Taking Garrus romance as an example.(only played 1 femshep, only did Garrus romance grudgingly to see the famed paragon interrupt in his romance)
In fantasy dwarves and humans (example) can be very good friends, but physically they are well, incompatible.
Elf - Halfling pairings is kinda rare too.
Fine, Garrus is a cool character I'll give him that but I would like a game for ME3 where romances is well, "less" - Not that I mind flavor but in ME2 I can barely talk to a female without hitting on her and if I turn her down she will never talk to me again. I mean "Wtf" - Can't we have some serious adult FRIENDSHIPS with dialogue, without the whole "lets have sex" thing in it?
In DA you can flirt with Oghren, but you can't go all the way - It's fine, it's humor, it's more adult.
And Tali romance, don't even get me started... I risk killing her?!? Even if I liked her character I wouldn't do that to her despite she perhaps wants it. But again, physiology difference is just to big.
I can like a member of the opposite sex without constantly thinking about how to get that person in bed.
I had way better arguments in my head as well, they're gone. Perhaps they come back later when I get flamed but seriously, can we have a more adult ME3 where it's possible to be friends with Miranda after saying I didn't mean it that way instead of just hearing "There's a lot to do commander, another time" constantly after that?
Guess it's to much to ask
OP is just like Ashley.
I hated romancing humans until I met Miranda the first ever good looking human in Mass Effect Universe (Besides Chakwas) I was going to stick with Liara but she is different in ME2. And you are just pretty much hateful towards the whole Mass Effect romance system. Just shut up and go whine to your mother.
My sister owned a Dog Shelter but still loved cats. I also like Turians, Salarians, Asari, Hanar.....

And here the short version of why. (the following rule does have exceptions, but they're exactly that: exceptions: odd minority preferences and the rare symbiotic co-evolution):Inter-species romance is implausible because between any two individuals of any species, no mutual sexual attraction will exist unless, both being healthy and under the most supportive circumstances of their environment and life cycles, they could engage in sexual reproduction with each other.
Given the huge fan threads for Tali and Garrus, your assertion is contradicted by the data. It's a roleplaying game, and in that game a lot of people choose to have their Shepard think that Garrus or Tali is attractive.
Also, the assertion that romantic attachment is solely linked to reproductive viability is deeply flawed. Culture is a hugely potent force for governing attraction, all you need to do is look at historical and worldwide variations in the standard of desirable beauty to see that. Want to know why the Asari are considered beautiful by every race? Because the Asari support that notion, and in order to pursue diversity actively throw out the idea of them being every species' potential mate.
The above quote you gave is applicable for any non-sentient being. Sentient love is far more complex and can't be "ruled on" in a single paragraph.

At least that's how it should be. I for one hate this common notion of aliens being little more than green/blue/gray skinned sexual fantasies.
That's fine and I won't bash you for that opinion. However, a lot of people really like the romance arcs in Mass Effect and I'm one of them. I could care less about how it would work in OUR universe, I just allow myself to get enveloped into the one Bioware created.
Like I said earlier, if you look too hard into things, you lose the magic of it all. You HAVE to suspend disbelief sometimes.
But the point is, it was different in ME1. While a setting can have any level of realism it sets itself to, It's just jarring when said level changes accross the series.
The fans ask for it, the fans pay for it, the fans get it.

I do agree with you that Bioware needs to make more neutral or "lets just be friends" choices for talking to the crew. I for one when playing my femshep felt stupid trying to go that route with Garrus. Everytime I saw him I was like "Thats my bud, my bro, the guy I trust in a firefight without question and split a Keg after the fighting's done." So I never even went down that tree with him. But at the same time, Ive always liked the idea of "more than human." Ive never played a human in any table top rpg, if other race choices were allowed, until d20, and thats only because they became a viable play choice for point geeking(sorry Im that type of player).
Its the idea of being something other than human, or more to the point doing something other than human. Its the Cpt.. Kirk Syndrom someone mentioned earlier, I wanna do the green chick. And all the choices in the game are desirable, if not a bit cliche. MIranda is the ultra smart and hot cheerleader the average guy couldnt touch. Jacob is the All American QB and all around nice guy every girl fantasized about, Thane is the ultra cool lonewolf that girls were either scared of but whos knees would buckle if he looked at them. And Im betting every guy has had a fantasy about the tatooed tough girl that would just as easily out drink you as **** you in the public bathroom. Tali falls into the Cpt. Kirk train of thought, while also being a FAN fav to the Nth degree. And Garrus, well, Im a bit lost on him so someone else will have to fill out his cliche, but its there, Im sure.
And before the flames comes, these are just observations Ive noticed of the human condition. Generalizations not hard lined facts in every person, made obvious by the opinion of the OP, and others that feel like him.

Amen to that (and I am a big fan of his romance, but come on...either you do smexytiem with a character or you get cut off from further conversation? LAME x100).

I'll be sure to go explain to my gay neighbour right away that he is, in fact, not sexually attracted to anyone he sleeps with.
But seriously, "Sex is just for reproduction"? I figured people would have realized by now that this is not just untrue for humans, but for the animal kingdom as well, for just about any serious scientific study of the last 40 years, and everyone who doesn't live behind the moon. (Or in a church/mosque)
