Dragon Age is A LOT of fun, but I don't think you will suddenly become interested in Renaissance Faire's because of it. Just know that you're jumping into a fantasy game, where as Mass Effect it feels like that world could be real, hence why you probably jumped into space engineering. DA:O however, is really just more of an adventure with really great companions with depth and storylines that keep your attention. I am still playing several different characters so that I could get ALL the endings in the game, so definitely give it a try. It will keep your attention at least for a while if you're into the medieval fantasy.

If you're asking if Dragon Age is like Mass Effect, it is not.

It has "depth," just not the same kind as ME. Different gameplay mechanics. Will it satisfy your urge? Why don't you watch gameplay videos?

Story-wise, it kind of feels like Mass Effect in Middle Earth, but it's a lot closer to a gritty Neverwinter Nights dropped in a bowl of grits.

If you like good RPGs, DA is for you. What does it matter if it's like Mass Effect? It has some similarities to ME 1, not so much to ME 2. I consider that a good thing, but you make of it what you will.

Rent it and try. If you like it, get the DLC's.

Hahaha, no.

ME2 is a TPS with RPG elements. DAO is an RPG with lite RTS elements. And the way they handle characters and dialog is what ME2 should have done.

Yup, Dragon Age is STORY DRIVEN, not shooter action driven,

Dragon Age focuses on the relationships of the characters and the enviroment, combat is a far distant priority for Dragon Age.

And dragon Age is replayable multiple times.

Dragon Age is more closely like Mass Effect 1, not Mass Effect 2

Substance takes priority over bells and whistles and flashing distractions.

Hope that helps!

DAO and ME are two very different games. In my opinion, DAO is vastly superior to ME as far as an RPG goes although the story is very generic, i found that the character interaction and the journey was far better than both ME games.

Imo, most of the characters from ME1 were horribly boring and uninteresting while the romances in the second game are awful and overly watered down.

I agree for most part Sith but I think you not giving ME1 enough credit.

You learned ALOT about your companions by listening to them in elevators and other areas in ME1, not just talking to them on ship (which I agree could have been better).

But in ME2 with elevators and casual conversation between NPCs eliminated you saw how really weak and poorly they could be (and were) done in a video Game!

Maybe im just delusional cause I want a GOOD adult SCI FI RPG so badly that I artificially promote ME1 but for me it goes:

1) ME1

2) DA:O

3) KotOR

4) Jade Empire

rest really to old or just to crappy to matter.

I'll give credit where its due, there's barely anything to learn about any of the characters in ME1 with their 1 to 2 liners in elevators and almost all of the interaction is on board the ship(both games suffer from this), thats where we learn about them but to me, most of them felt like boring walking encyclopedias.

Personally the characters to me were a lot better fleshed out in the second game and i felt that the plot was really more about them than the "actual main story" which is too short and where we know absolutely nothing about the collectors.

Some one brought up the fact that ME2 had a more "episodic" feel rather than a full feature film and i think thats true but that doesn't mean its a bad thing, i get the feeling that ME2 was more focused on the gameplay and combat than the actual main plot(seeing that the majority of the "plot" was on the characters and their personal stories).

I'm hoping ME3 implements ME1's focus on the actual plot combined with ME2's gameplay and character stories.

I have both games (ME2 and DA:O) on Xbox and I vastly prefer ME2. In my opinion the animations and voice-overs (for non party npcs) in DAO were horrible. Everyone stands rigid and runs awkwardly. They have these horribly-stressed cockney-British accents. Graphically the game is dull in my opinion. I guess they were going for a "dark (emo) fantasy," but the art direction ended up so ...boring. The "origin" stories are mostly gimmicks (the first hour of gameplay is different, but soon enough every character is railroaded back into the same storyline). I also found the psuedo-realtime combat to ve frustrating on the xbox, as your party-member AI does really odd and crazy things (like run around in circles trying to attack an out-of-range enemy).

I found DA:O to ve generic and boring (nothing new to the fantasy genre), but that's just my opinion.

Give Dragon Age Origins a rental for sure and just to play it safe in case you don’t like it.

I just finished my first run through a few days ago and it clocked in at 122 hours, so expect a long game. This isnt ME2 with its maybe 45 hours of game time.

Depth? You cant go wrong with Dragon Age. It beats out both Mass Effect games by far.
-The story is familiar as is most fantasy RPG but its still a good one. There are also several subplots that are very well written and thought out.
-Your companions at certain spots, will actually talk to each other and with and with 8 (9 if you get The Stone Prisoner download) of them it can add some good replay value alone. These are full dialogs and in several cases they will continue their chat the next time they talk.
-All the main quests have at least 2 significant choices for them to resolve. If you make the wrong one with certain companions in your group you will… well, you’ll find out.
-If you play all the starting origin quests, the games main story expands even more giving you a complete picture of what happens. This alone gives the game a great replay value, just to see the story unfold with a different origin. There are 6 of these to choose from. You’ll get to choose 1 of them based on your character race and class.
-A downside (for some) is your character has no voice. So don’t expect your character to be like Shepard and talk.
-Lots of skills, talents/spells to choose from for yourself and your companions. The same is true for weapons and armor and ingredients for making potions/poisons and traps (if your skilled to make them).
-A wide variety of companions to choose from to use in your group. Even when they are the same class (warrior, mage or rogue) they have different skills and talent/spells from each other. Each one has their own background and reason for joining you.
-Oh, romance wise everything is covered with 2 heterosexual choices (1 male, 1 female) and 2 bisexual choices ( 1 male, 1 female).

That should be enough to get you to look at the game and give it a try.

I played dragon age before I played ME2.

Different games completely. Both are extremely fun, However if you want to play one of the all time great RPGs, Dragon age will more then fill that need for an immersive story and a very polished game.

As Darth says above, It takes a while to finish this game. But in no way shape or form is it boring or repetitive from start to finish its one huge amazing story that leaves you wanting the next one to be out already.

Pretty much.

Older I got the less excited I got about new games!

I tried Fallout 3 and hated it, tried Morrowind and hated it, refused to try Obsidian because of Morrowind and Fallout3.

But that was my Bioware list, just for the record. my over all list is

1) Mass Effect 1
2) Dragon Age: Origins
3) KotOR2
4) KotOR1
5) Jade Empire
6,7,8,9) AD&D Gold Box games by SSI
10) Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within

I am still wondering how anybody who says he likes RPGs or even that it's their most favorite genre can stand those so-called roleplaying games from Beth****.

Your list does contain an interesting non-RPG, however. And also interesting is the complete abundance of RPG classics from the last decade.

Not hard to grasp, I like story above all else.

Bethsoft stuff is VERY VERY VERY weak on story, terribly weak on story.
I liked the AD&D stuff as it was all about the story and then really didnt like what was offered for well over a decade straight till Baldurs Gate (in top 15).

Even the Gabreil Knight game, yes it was a adventure game but it was also a STORYBOARD game, it was all about the story, the adventure took a backseat.

My preference stays true to today.

ME1 was a fantastic story and the game was about the story, not the action
DA:O was probably actually better then ME1 but im sci fi starved so ME1 gets the nod
K2, less polished then K1 but MORE STORY

Listen, if I wanna shoot things, ill go shoot things. Be it paintball or real guns. Why would I play a computer game to simulate something I can do in real life? (never understood that)
I play games for same reason I enjoy books, the story, the imagination, the suspence, the growing, and to a lesser degree the exploration. If I want to sword fight, ill learn fencing and sword fighting in real life. If I want to shoot, ill go shoot. Games and books are suppose to deliver a escape for things YOU CANT DO in real life.

Really hope that explains it.

Oh and Sith, your so full of crap, go troll elsewhere. I was being nice but saw your incessent whining in other thread and its about time someone told you to go suck on your mothers, well you get idea. Your opinion, contrary to (well your opinion) is neither the majority held or most correct one so really, get over yourself already.

Shooting a real gun is nothing like shooting a game gun. In-game weapons allow you to toy with physics, among other things.

Dragon Age was fun for one time. I never managed to finish a second playthrough because the story and characters are a bit too generic for my tastes.

I would love to see the goldbox sets redone to todays standards. Pool or radiance came out in 1985 for god sake hehe.

The old dragon lance DND hack and slashes shakes her head... have not thought about those in years.

They even had gone multi player with the original 1991 version of neverwinter nights and then Darksun onlne came out in 1996 based on the gold box engine. Neverwinter being the very first Online Graphical Multiplayer RPG and had a 6 year run on AOL

wow that was ages ago i am getting too old..

Dragon Age is a more typical RPG, it has more similarities to KotoR or Baldur's Gate than Mass Effect.

Its much longer, some people may say too long (some areas feel like padding).

It has more dialogue (or at least more dialogue options). It's mostly talking heads tho, not as much animated sequences as ME1&2.

The story is pretty basic, but the journey is amazing and so are the characters.

The battle system is hit or miss, some people love it, some others hate it. I think is ok.

Overall is a very good game, was one of my favorites last year.

Get it on the pc so you can use mods :wizard: (but be warned that the game is very buggy on some systems).
