 when exploring the forests during the witherfang quest i came across and old hermit, i traded a few things with him and got myself an acorn. after speaking him for a bit longer he says he can help you get past the protected entrance to the center of the forrest but he asks you to kill an talking old oak tree for him.

i went to kill the tree and it turns out he is a pretty cool rhyming tree and after talking to him he says the hermit stole an acorn from him so i gave it back being the nice person that i am. after doing that the conversation stopped and i can no longer attack or talk to him (when i try talking he says something about me not having left the forest yet). after i gave the old tree his acorn i went back to the old hermit spoke to him and decided to attack and kill him.

also on the map it shows one of the mission waypoint things that looks like a vase by the big tree.

is there another way for me to enter the center of the forest to fight witherfang now or was me killing the old man and not being able to talk to the big tree anymore a bug. if its a bug then i may just start a new character as iv put in an additional 15 hours or so after i attempted the forest. if there is another way past thats all i need to know and i can keep searching knowing im not bugged and wasting my time.

Since you stated you were nice, did you give the acron back to the Oak? He should have rewarded you with a branch (actually a staff you can use) that will allow you to move on.  I suspect you did get the Oak branch if the tree does not bring up the talk choices.  Try to go through the mist.
