I don't see this issue as any more or less valid than any other "good idea." There doesn't seem to be a valid reason for recommending Donald Glover other than he happens to be very visible and people like him, and all this in response to a writer who asked "In this day and age, why does Spidey have to be a white guy?"
It's not innovative, it's not activism, it's not racism. it's merely the process movies go through all the time when casting, only this time, it's a very well-known character, which is why this question is getting all this coverage. i doubt moviemakers put so much stock in Twitter trends and forum comments that they'd change a decision just because the internet said so.
while it would certainly be neat to see, and Donald Glover is a decent actor from what little I've seen from him, this really isn't the giant social issue some people are making it out to be. it's just another "how about this guy as that character?" discussion on the internet that happens to have gotten legs.

Yes, but which source material? Which artist's interpretation of Peter Parker, should he look like? The original Ditko Peter Parker would look different from the Romita Jr. Peter Parker, which would look different from the Deodato Peter Parker, which would look different from the Ramos Peter Parker, which would look different fromt he Wieringo Peter Parker, which would look different from the Liefeld Peter Parker, which would look different fromt he McFarlane Peter Parker, etc. And that's just artists. inkers and colourists also influence how a character looks. And how closely should a live actor resemble an artist's endition of that character, anyway?the_one_54321 wrote...
I prefer they stick to the source material.
Whoever they choose for the part, he should look like Peter Parker does in the comics.
And what about voice? An actor can be a spitting image of whichever version of Peter Parker they like, but does he also have the voice they're looking for, or the movement, or even the body type? A lot of that can be worked on before shooting, but there's got to be something to work with. i thought Tobey Maguire was as good a choice for Peter Parker as anyone. Maybe Topher Grace would have been a better choice, i think, but Maguire wasn't terrible until they had him do his emo Crispin Glover impression in Spider-Man 3.
i would prefer to not have Donald Glover be Peter Parker Spider-Man, since I have certain expectations for that character, but if was some other dude who put on the Spider-Man suit and wasn't THE Peter Parker, I think i'd be more comfortable with it.

Let's try and keep this apolitical, please. i think it's a neat discussion to have, as long as we can keep having it without getting too heavy.
