So far it seems like every major encounter I come accross, I am getting my head handed to me. Going after the werewolf leader, I can't beat that stupid little dragon or get even close. Kicked my butt each time. The mad hermit, didn't even scratch him. The pack of hounds in redcliff castle, destroy me each and every time. I have been giving up on these to just move on, but I know I am missing something. Any suggestions? Playing on normal.
Am I missing something here?

Do you have 4 characters in your party?
Use morrigan, hex, winters grasp, lightning, life drink (I think the name is wrong)....that should kill or almost kill any yellow mob.
The key to the game, IMHO, is the stun/immobilize. Use Morrigan mind blast or cone of cold to keep the orange mobs locked.

Hex line of spells needed. Also two mages help. Horror and winter grasp help a lot. Use threaten on fighter to aggro and rinse and repeat. Those overwhelming werewolves are very nasty once you get further in so have fun. The stonefist spell is good to have for the hounds/werewolves when they go for overwhelm ability. Those hounds are easy compared to the courtyard battle. That is if you forget to let the knights in lol oops. Mad hermit just ask questions and trade for items from him. I did not fight him. He plays the ask a question game.

Hopefully this information helps.

I had the same problem with the dragon killing me on normal (I and Allister at 7, Morrigan and Leilana are 8th). This was the first place I came after Lothering village.
Here is how I defeated the dragon.
I set up at the top of the staris near the entrance. I move Leilana out to disarm the first trap and then put here back at the stairs. I move Allister out until the dragon spawns. Then I run him back to the stairs near the top (75% way up). Meanwhile I have all the range people go off. When the dragon comes into the hallway near the base of the stairs I have allister attack. I keep healing Allister and if he needs a potion I will try to freeze the dragon. If the dragon aggros one of my mages I run away and have the other continue to whack it down.
The benefit of this is the stairs do a lot to block the flaming breath and you are not hitting any of the traps in the main room.

I guess I just have to keep working on it. I have been using the same four for awhile now so I guess it's time to switch it up. I have been using my mage, Sten, Alistar, and Leilana. Of course it might be too late now that I am into redcliff. Can I go back and try it after this?

I have to agree with Uberwilhelm. I get my ass handed to me constantly which makes this no fun. for a normal setting this game seems just a bit too unbalanced towards the negative. I've given up on two characters now. seems like when I downloaded the patch it just made it worse.
