Im running mass effect 2 on a pc with
2.16 ghz cpu intel core 2 duo
3 GB ram
ati x1600 (128mb)
I know that I am not fully meeting the system requirements but hey it runs pretty well on the lowest settings, never gotten any lag, even on my second playthrough. Anyway... I have heard that downloading better, or newer, drivers would help me get the most of my gpu, is this true? I am currently running some omega drivers that I downloaded a while back but I am not sure if these are the best ones to run mass effect 2. By the way, are all drivers created equal? do some drivers run better than others? or is it just "get the newest drivers you can find" type of deal?
Are there any "tweaks" that can me made in the engine.ini file that might run it better?
Thanks a lot!

i know this post is really old but i found it really helpful thanks. only problem is everything looks pixelated now. which setting is the one that does this????

Lowering the graphics settings that much will cause it to not look pretty. That's just how it is

oooh okay. thanks. ill go through the list and see how much nicer I can get it to look without sacrificing performance

i play on my laptop and it use to run great on 1280X700, I got like 20-25 fps. But when i upgraded to Win 7, i had to drop it to the lowest resolution to just get 15. What the hell happened. Specs. graphcard: Nivdia 9200m GS, 2.3 duel core, 4 gb ram.

If you upgraded from Windows XP to 7, a performance drop was expected on such low-end hardware. Windows 7 demands much more system resources than XP. You can try to reduce 7's strain on the your computer by going into the Control Panel, selecting "Performance Information and Tools", then "Adjust Visual Effects", then "Adjust For Best Performance". Note: This will result in Windows 7 taking the "classic" Windows 95/98 appearance. If you need more performance, there is a program called Game Booster that terminates some unneeded processes to optimize gaming performance. It's free, but unfortunately version 2.0 consumes more resources than it relieves, and the old version 1.6 is no longer available for download. I have the installation .exe for version 1.6, which is actually useful, so if you give me your email address I can send it to you.
If neither of those two options works, then the only thing left is to revert to Windows XP.
