It's such a minor quibble in such an otherwise incredible game, but this quest has really pissed me off.
Most of the other quests in the game are rich and deep, with multiple solutions, etc. But this one basically gives you one chance to say one thing to Zerlinda's father. And if, in one line of dialogue, you can't convince him that abandoning his daughter and grandchild is wrong, then hey! Quest over! Zerlinda dies alone and penniless in the streets! Screw it! You tried! On to more important things!
No option to help her find alternatives. Not even an option to give her some money to help her out. All other dialog options (such as suggesting she take her child to the Cantry, etc.) have vanished. Apparently the future of this girl and her child hinge completely on whether or not I can dazzle her **** dad with one freaking sentence.
Admittedly, it's a minor quest and has no bearing on the story. And in a lesser game, I wouldn't give it a second thought. But this is the first time (since Planescape: Torment) that I've ever been this immersed in a storyline, and a crapsack quest like this one just mars the experience.
So I'm currently holding off on talking to the father until I've built up a few more ranks in Coercion. Here's hoping I'll *finally* be able to sway the old bastard.
Am I missing something? Is there more to this quest? If so, I will gladly eat crow and celebrate my love of Bioware in song.
Thanks for listening. You've been very therapeutic.
