RotK was lighter then Two Towers, or did you and me read the same book or watch the same movie? The last part of the trilogy is always lighter then the second part.

Only because Gondor and the fellowship won in the end., but it was hardly cheery before that.

It was still alot more cheery then Two Towers. That's going to happen to ME3. Expect ME3 to be like RotJ minus the Ewoks and have a epic final battlel ike RotK.

No, the Hanar. 10 legs FTW!

ME1 was a great game, but I never truly felt like the Galaxy was in peril from Saren. ME2 made me actually view the Collectors as ann extremely credible threat

In ME1 since the beginning you know about your true enemy - the Reapers, not Saren. ME1 is most epic game i ever played, especially the ending is a wonderful experience - some cinematic moments from the battle of citadel made me feel something in my stomach i can't even describe, but i never felt it when i played game or watched a movie.
ME2 was great game, but i never thought of collectors as real threat, and only the omega4 relay cinematic was well made, but the part that takes place inside the collector base was just a obstacle race, where i tried to make everything as fast as i can just to embarass the collectors - for me, they are petty vilians thinking they are big scary badasses, that started fight with someone thousand times better (Shep), and my goal was to punish them for their stupidity, and make them see how insulting me ends.

Maybe you and the other poster are right. It's been a while since I originally played ME, and it's hard not to think of it retrospectively when you play it for the sixth time.

you can't argue that one is better than the other---they are both amazing. In ME1 you're enemies are the reapers, but Saren is the one giving you problems. He is a thinking breathing turian, not a slave or mind dead freak (at least he doesn't start way...)

The collectors are just empty husks. They are frightening because there is so much unknown about them. Sure you find out that they are basically herding humans to create some kind of BS reaper, but I feel that if Saren hadn't gone all indoctrinated, he would have the capability to kick ass much collector ass as Shepard

Shepard:Oh my god the volus are the key to killing the reapers! "sets volus on stone platform" "volus starts glowing and shots giant laser beam into the sky"

I'm tired of grimdark. And to be honest ME2 didn't even do it that well.

I see that the darkness of a story is very subjective.

I wonder if the 'dark' aspect is supposed to be a selling point?

I never really saw either game as dark - except for Mass Effect 2 being visually dark.

I can't be the only one who turned up the gamma settings in the options immediately after the prologue...

Hah yeah, good
luck with that. The Bioware board demands that you take sides, and it
will not be reasoned with.

Yeah, things basically keep getting worse and worse until close to the end. My point was really just that there are third acts in trilogies like that too, and it's a perfectly good way to wrap things up if the final plot twist at the end isn't some retarded deus ex machina. I'm not sure if it would work for Mass Effect, though. On the one hand, there is a threat that seems basically undefeatable, but with most of the galaxy's population unaware of the Reapers, you just don't have that general tone of despair that LotR has. I'm still thinking they'll go the Jedi route, just hopefully not with anything as retarded as the Ewoks.

That is, unless Zaeed gets to slaughter them all and curse like a sailor.

Well, with the worst ending the galaxy is lost, but that´s not canon. But as dark second parts of trilogies go, it wasn´t that much (I also think ESB was not that much, after all Vader also fails his goals). I like the ending fittig the tone of the story though, and often in series everything is going to hell till the 10 last minutes/pages/whatever and then we get a too happy ending. Can be done well, but if you abuse dark, it shouldn´t be all laughs and joy at the end.

How black?

None more black.

I thought ME2 was a good balance of "darkness" and humor.  As long as ME3 does not become silly, or pull a george lucus on us (Jar-Jar, or the ewoks), I think it will do just fine.

Mind you... a volus is a good ewok substitute.  Seeing them in battle would kill me laughing.

I loved the humor in ME2 with all the easter eggs and funny bits of dialogue, and I think Casey meant there will be more of that in ME3. It's not like ME3 is going to become a circus or something.

Casey has said, before ME2 was released, that ME2 is the darkest act, and ME3 will be the 'heroic final push' act (those weren't his exact words but it's what he meant).

Mister Mida wrote...

I never understood why Bioware called
ME2 Mass Effect's 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Sure it was darker than ME
(1), but not that dark. ME3 should be dark as hell. Why? Look at the
last ten seconds of ME2 main plot. You'll see what I mean.

Ha yeah I don't see how anything could be darker than the reapers sweeping over the milky way, destroy everything in their path.

It could be more lighthearted if they gave the Reapers funny sound effects.

ME1 to me had all of the components of a good story RPG, where your actions had severe consequences. You also had more numerous weapons and armour to choose from.

I did feel slightly in ME2 that actions you made did not impact the game as much as I would have liked. But the graphics and overall gameplay was many times more improved. To me ME2 was Sheperd acting in a magnificent 7 style way recruiting allies and fighting villians with a few deaths along the way depending on how you play.

I really hope they don't go overboard where there's a joke at every single moment.

"OH MY GOD THE REAPERS JUST BLEW UP EARTH"

"Well, think of how much we're going to get from insurance!"

"LOL"

ME2 was dark? All I saw was a sub par plot with no emotional engagement. What was supposed to make it dark?

ME3 ending will consist of whoever died at Virmire, Saren, and your dead squadmates from the Suicide Mission in ME2 standing around as apparitions as Volus dance around a campfire

It has to be, for my ultimate, "Everyone lives happily ever after, Shepard get's his own harem!" ending that I plan on achieving.
