Is archery kind of... boring?

I mean, you're never going to be the rock star of the group, even with all the best gear. It just isn't happening. A lot of the shots do similar things to one another. You have only one AOE ability until Awakening, and it's a stun.

Really it seems an NPC with tactics can do the job just as well as a player (aside from Scattershot not being permitted in tactics). I took an archer warrior to Ostagar. I like the idea of playing an archer. Maybe I needed to stick with it.

Awakening gave archery a much-needed shot in the arm, no question. Good stuff. But there's a whole game before it that didn't get anything.

I prefer archer rogues. I think I would find a warrior archer to be quite boring. However they can make pretty decent tanks once their dex/defense gets high enough.

Do the talents from the rogue tree even work with archery?

Obviously Dirty Fighting and Below The Belt are non-weapon attacks, you just have to be in range.

But Combat Movement (can Archery backstab??), Coup De Grace, Deadly Strike, Heartseeker and Weak Points all seem like they might be dagger-only.

I tried Combat Movement. It worked well for me. At least until I got bored with flanking and started shooting then in the front.

A Rogue archer is your bestest friend, especially a Cunning build combined with Song of Valor. Arrow of Slaying does an incredible amount of damage and is only 3 in on the archery tree. Your Rogue archer can deplete a Boss's HP very quickly for just a measly 3 points. Excellent on the Revenant and Scattershot will stun his baddies. One shot, one kill for the Whiteys.

Take Dirty Fighting up to Coup de Grace. 3 points to the Below the Belt tree for Lethality or, better still, 4 points for Evasion. Max out your Stealth. Max out the archery tiers. Take 3 in Coercion. 2 points in Dual Weild. Take Bard for Song of Valor or Ranger for a 5 party team pet as your 2nd spec. Sit back and enjoy the fireworks. Your Blood Mage can make good use of a bear pet.

Try it out, then tell me he isn't a rock star.

Backstabbing does not work with archery so Coup de Grace is useless.

Most of the times you 'evade' it plays an evade animation and stops you attacking which is not good for your dps.

To the OP, yes archers can be pretty boring, especially early game, although I would argue that they are about on par with Warriors, minus the flashy kill animations. I do, however, think an archer rogue is the more fun of the two builds, mainly because of stealth (for instance when you stealth your next attack is an auto crit, so stealth then scattershot scores you lots of nice numbers), but I also enjoy playing Ranger, once you get Master Ranger you have some pretty good choices for different situations. This is an excellent guide on the Archer and got me to play one in the first place.

Weak Points is the only one of those that works with archery. Archers can't backstab but they do still benefit from the Flanking attack bonus (up to +20) which Combat Movement can help you get more often.

I found playing as an Archer rogue improved my skill at the game quite a bit. I found that I focused on my other characters more than I did as a warrior.

You may also wish to read through this thread:

And by spamming Potent Lyrium you could afford all the expensive goodies in game.

In tactics, set Enemy, medium to long range, use ability: scattershot. Works for me. If you think it's not permitted in tactics, how do you think the AI uses it?

In general, yes, I'd chalk this up as yet another game that poorly implements archery. Not that it isn't strong at higher levels, but the list of problems is pretty long.

Archery becomes pretty awesome in Awakening but isn't great in Origins. Generally I find it best to get gear that adds to ranged critical chance and armour penetration to improve DPS. I find the only really useful talents in Origins are Scattershot and Arrow of Slaying.

One of my favorite tactics is to stealth Leliana and send her in solo to scout and snipe out enemy mages with AoS. I find archers more enjoyable to play than tanks.

They are really fun to play solo. In groups they are boring I would agree, and are a great role for a party member since very little tactcs are needed. For example I use this on Leliana

Self Any: Activate: Dueling

Self Any: Activate: Song of Courage

Enemy: Medium to Long Range: Scattershot

Enemy: Enemy Health > 50%: Critical Shot

Enemy: Enemy Boss: Critical Shot

Self Health: < 50% Use Least Powerful Health Politice

Shattering Shot really not needed since she has such high cunning, and I usually have a 2H with me for Sunder anyways, and I doubt they stack anyways, and Arrow of Slaying I just open up with it for her from Stealth if I think I will need it(Yellow Mages) are about the only thing I deem worthy of using it on because it is quite overrated I think, and I can usually mana clash them anyways.

Do yourself a favor: get Return to Ostagar, and equip the Repeater Gloves.

Yes Repeater Gloves are insanely good allows you to use Aim which really helps your damage.

For some reason your last tactic isn't showing. However, it might as well not be there anyway. The way you have it set up, she won't bother healing until after all enemies are dead. And at that point, any healing items she uses are just wasted. For better results, move that last gambit up to the top of the list. It should help her survival rate considerably.

^^ That's not an accurate reading of the logic. If Scattershot and Critical Shot are on cooldown or his stamina is too low to use them, then his character will check to see if his health is below 50% and use a healing potion if applicable.

Oh. I guess I'm still thinking of it in terms of FFXII logic. No cool-downs to worry about. Sorry.
