I stand behind you and your report Ecael. You are a damned hero in my books.
Making a valid point and delivering it with sarcasm is an instant win in my eyes.

Damned hero, or Goddamned hero?

Damned hero. It's a quote from Captain Anderson, who will always be just that tiny bit more awesome than Zaeed.

Fun is subjective, so that's up to each individual person, really.

And you'd find some rather odd people out there with their definitions of fun(One friend of mine saying he had more fun with Batman: Dark Tomorrow than GTA IV)

Not really... We have a general consensus on what's fun or what's good that surpasses individual taste... That's why literature has classics that are generally acknowledged as superior to the average muck.

You know, my problem with Mass Effect 2 is that it seems to have done away with RPG elements rather than refining them.

Fandom complains about the inventory, largely on the basis that it's annoying to manage and a bit too large?
-Bioware removes the inventory completely, from Shepard AND squaddies.

Fandom complains about the mako?
-Bioware removes mako, replacing it with a gimmicky hovertank...

The game critics were the ones who complained about the inventory, Mako and elevators. The inventory was replaced with an upgrade system, the Mako with the Hammerhead, and the elevators with stairs and detailed loading screens (although the Citadel Rapid Transit loading screen in Mass Effect 1 looked quite cool).

Bioware should learn to hardly listen to there fan base...most just **** for no reason

So BioWare shouldn't listen to you too because you said that they should listen to you when you say that they shouldn't listen to you because they listen too much?

PARADOX!

Well, err... it's mostly a paradox then.

(I wasted way too much of my allowance on those stupid cards to cement my hatred of Pokecrack forever. I did however get a N64 as a child so I can't complain too much.)

That said Pokemon is more exemplar of the Japanese RPG. Essentially JRPG have lots of weird/unique characters, and tons of items along with all sorts of nifty stats to track. And most JRPGs are turn based... Bioware on the other hand is more of a Western RPG if you will. WRPGs are more about freedom of choice and tend to have preference to real time combat. Although there still items, stats, levels, etc. The most ideal example of WRPGs I can think of is probably the Elder Scrolls series. Personally my favorite/ideal RPG is the Baldur's Gate series.

WRPGs have some kind of central story, but along the way you are faced with many decisions to essentially be good or evil. JRPGs on the other hand tend to have a strong central plot, but don't really present you with many choices other then what to level up. In WRPGs your choices ultimately don't change the story, but do change whether you end up the Hero or the new Villian.

Bioware's games are somewhat unique in that characters are very important (Like most JRPGs), but your character is generally faced with many choices. Bioware's success is largely based on it's blend of different game elements, which in the end makes their games feel more fresh and fun.

Personally I find turn-based combat silly. I don't see how combat can be exciting or fun if you can sit around picking your nose while deciding what attack to use. I love how monsters will just sit there and wait it's turn to attack. Having "turns" to me is something more suited to strategy games. Things with roots in games like Chess. Simply put real time combat is the way to go, and you still can technically have "turns" in a real time combat system anyways.

Do you really want to see this...

Shepard has encountered.... THRESHER MAW

Shepard: "Garrus I choose you!"

GARRUS>Sniper Shot

THRESHER MAW -10 HP!

Garrus: "Scratch one!"

SHEPARD>Rocket Attack

THRESHER MAW -20 HP!

Shepard: "I should go."

THRESHER MAW>Acid Spit

GARRUS -500 HP!

SHEPARD -500 HP!

Game Over

This may well and all be fun for some, but for me not so much. Of course said battle could have been won had I only grinded XP from Vorcha so that Garrus was Level 85.

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are not meant to be classic RPGs. The point of the Mass Effect games is to cross genres being a hybrid of Shooter and RPG. Core gameplay wise the Mass Effect games are Third Person Shooters. There's just no escaping this. Combat is to be resolved primarily by your shooting skills. However you do have some RPG elements in the forms of Levels and Abilities. Basically the games are meant to be Shooters with RPG elements. They are not however meant to RPGs with Shooter elements. The idea is you have the fun shooting mechanics combined with some tactical RPG elements to add depth.

It's hard to classify what Mass Effect truly is, because in many ways it's almost a new genre of game. Making ME3 into a pure Shooter would just being dumbing the game down. While making ME3 into a pure RPG would just make it needlessly complicated and dull. The key to success lies in finding the right balance of Shooter stuff and RPG stuff. Which is hopefully what Mass Effect 3 will accomplish.

That said I think the general consensus is ME2 is a bit too much Shooter, and not enough RPG.

However what RPG elements are needed to make Mass Effect 3 better needs to be carefully examined within the context of what the Mass Effect games are trying to achieve. For example making weapon effectiveness entirely stat based like most RPGs is probably not the way to go.

Wow.... laughed throughout most of this thread. Bravo Ecael, bravo. While I dont fully agree on some of your points I can consent that there needs to be "more."  Warning Wall of text crit for 9k fire damage. (flamming pun not intended).Posted Image

1. Inventory. Posted ImagePeople complained about to much inventory, to much inventory management, so BW reduced to to nearly nothing. This was a bit extreme. Maybe not as many choices, but more catagories (mods, helmets, like Kotor/Kotor2).
2. Strategy. Posted ImageI was fine with it. The only thing I would add to Strategy is the ability to control the other toons more directly like DAO.
3. Customization. Posted ImageMan I had difficulty with the new system. I want Kotor back, manipulation of stats, skills and powers. And the new point system made me cry because I always ended up with 1 or 2 points unspent because I didnt have enough points (I didnt so the morinth thing because I couldnt stand killing Samara).
4. Progression. Im not sure if there is an answer for the dilema you put forth. If the other characters in your team didnt level as you did then you would be stuck with MIranda and Jacob for the rest of the game. Enuf said. I would like to see a 4th squad member tho, maybe a 5th. That would definately make taking on alot of enemies a more interesting prospect. It would give it a more viseral battle feel. Posted ImageMore enemies good.
5. Immersion. Im not sure how being able to go to ground on almost every planet you could visit makes it more immersive. I for one, found hunting down pointless trophies (minerals, turian insignias, asari writings) for xp sake to be as mind numbing as most people found the new mining mini-game. Call me weird but I felt the new mining system made doing it worth the effort. More so than simply tag n bag like in ME1. Id also like to see more world interaction.
6. Vehicle Combat. Posted ImageI liked the Mako and hate the Hammerhead. I want my Mako back. Add some new stuff, whatever, it is definately a better vehicle than the paper plane hovercraft. Space combat you have to be careful with. Alot of games have tried it, very few have succeeded. the last one I found was back in the Colony Wars games for the old PS.
7. Exploration/Open-endedness. Posted ImageMore, How much more, I couldnt tell ya. Oblivion is to much and ME2 is not enough, there has to be a happy medium tho. Actually youre sugestions sound great, just so long as its not take a step get attacked take a step get attacked like in JRPGs(I hate that).
8. Mini- Games.Posted Image As far as I am concerned, you can take em or leave em. Hacking and Circuits were a fine replacement to having to take certain squad members in your group to make sure you can get into a box or ast a door(Garrus was the man in the first game). I never gambled, not even in Kotor. In Kotor 2 I did it just long enough to get the girl back from the gambler.
9. Side Quests. I agree with you on this one. They should have more to do with the plot. I think some should come with a timer of some kind. Like the Hostage quest from ME1 or the failing ship in ME2. Give them some since of urgency. You should be able to see the timer. The one attached to the IFF/Crew Kidnapping threw me for a loop not knowing it was there. I lost my entire crew accept the doctor and that sucked. Posted Image
10. Plot. I had no problems with the plot in ME2 (unlike some, grumble grumble, not mentioning any names). Some of the holes I just over looked, hell some I didnt even notice. But I do agree that some need resolutions, I.E. Wilson, Liara. The whole "Come back to life" thing didnt even phase me. I read Mary Shelly's Frankenstien, and there is no way how he brought the monster back to life would even remotely work. He would have ended up with a lightning fried corps puddle. But I could overlook it because the story was great.
11. Continuity. See above, but maybe this time try a little harder not to slip up the little things. By the way, Having ammo to inventory, didnt even phase me. Loved it, loved it.
12. Relationships/Romance. I do agree that there should be more open dialog with the LI, Id like to see more interaction with the entire crew. But thats just me.
13. Elevators suck. Nuff said, nuff said.

In conclusion, I agree, I disagree, but can it be said that the game is fun as is? Yes. Can it be done better? Yes.

I do have to commend you on your approach. Youre the first critic that didnt make it seem like youre bashing me over the head for being stupid just because I didnt agree with everything you had to say. I thank you for that.

Typos are extra.
