i agree with some of the points of OP. As with the inventory system, I think it's fine in its ME2 form, as well as the combat system, and so on. It all depends on your own definition of a RPG. I've played many better RPGs than ME2, using my definition, but also I don't find Pokemon series as the best form of such game. It's fine, eats a lot of your time, true. But what I find great about Pokemon games is:
1: Sand-boxish gameplay
2: My-pet-will-evolve-next-5-levels-I-must-play-a-bit-longer syndrome

I never had thoughts like "Whoa, it's hell of an RPG!". For me it was a game just to play, win some fights, ride a bike, buy some furniture for a treehouse, dont care about silly, simple plot.
ME is about epic plot, movie like cutscenes. Basically, this game is an epic movie. And this works for me.

Anyway, this thread made me laaugh once, and I cant resist:

Commander Shepherd met The Harbinger!
Go, Mordin!
Mordin: The chances of survival are... slim.
Mordin Solus uses Heavy Incinerate!
But it's not very effective...
Mordin: This should burn through any armor!
The Harbinger loses 20HP!
The Harbinger: YOUR FORM IS FRAGILE.
The Harbinger uses Salarian Race Obliteration!
It's super effective!
Mordin loses 200HP!
Mordin fainted!
Commander Shepherd: I should go.
Commander Shepherd flees!

I feel the need to bump this. classic satirical thread that happens to be relevant at this stage of Mass Effect 3's development.

Interesting and valid points.

I prefer ME though.
But they could still learn something from this!

Just realized this is an old thread...
... still valid though ;)

A lot of these things exist in Dragon Age: Origins.

What I got out of this Pokemon is a JRPG and Mass Effect is a WRPG, neither is better.
Mass Effect is more fun in my opinion recently, Pokemon got boring after hundreds of hours.
I personally loved Pokemon when I was younger, but in the last couple years I have fallen in love with other RPG games especially KOTOR, Elder Scrolls, and Mass Effect. JRPGs have gotten boring and ridiculous lately, FFXIII with its hair (and story) and Pokemon with its scary number of Pokemon (I read around 600+ recently). I like to develop my own character by having free will, predetermined things aren't very fun anymore.

JRPGS and RPGS are different. They're both great games but they're not the same.

This was a fun thread. I don't remember reading it before. Good thing it was necro'd.

Apparently, no one took heed of the OP's advice. Shame. The idea of using multiple pokémon, squadmates rather, would have been interesting. There's a war out there! Stay and guard the ship?

Although I think you made some good points, I think you're missing the core idea of an rpg... role playing. And I think most supposed rpg's miss this point entirely. Role playing means immersion in the story, your character and their choices... its about slipping into someone else's skin and walking around, not collecting items and upgrading your stats... though those are most often confused for what an rpg is, seeing as they are generally features of them. In terms of role play, mass effect 1 and 2 (I'm yet to play 3) are the best rpg's I've ever played without dice and a room full of geeks. I've never felt such gravity from my choices or such connection to my character in any other game... and that is pure role playing.
