Is it also possible that Shepard could suffer a serious injury resulting in facial disfigurement at the beginning of ME3, and that Liara or your LI or whoever help Shepard reconstruct the face? That could be a way of explaining away Shepard's changed appearance.
Hm we kind of been there done that in ME2,not that this would stop Bioware from doing it mind you,but it would feel repetitive
