On a new mage playthrough I happened to talk to an NPC mage in the tower during the origin story that said he had been recruited by the Wardens but declined and couldn't join because they could only have one mage. Did he mean only one mage per recruiting class or one mage overall... the second wouldn't be plausible it seems. Also, did Cailan intentionally send the "Grey Wardens" to light the beacon just so Alistair would be safe and available to take up the throne should he die? I can't believe it took me a ton of playthroughs to think of that; especially since in RTO the confidant tells you Cailan thought the battle might not be winnable.

1) Presumably one mage per group (garrison, company?) of Wardens. There are a lot of Wardens in Thedas - it would be daft to have one mage for the lost of them.
2) We don't know. It's one theory, but it's left open to the player's interpretation. RtO seemed to retcon a few things - it was handled by different writers than the main quest and it shows. Some of the things seem a bit out of character so I take it with a pinch of salt.
