I never could understand people who say they hate rap or country and just paint a huge NO symbol over the whole genre. Truly, when I wrote my initial post, I was thinking a lot more specifically. Specific Bands. Specific Songs. Specific Instruments even.jynthor wrote...

Though I'm sure Steely Dan fans out there think there has to be one song by the band that I can listen to without falling into a pit of Musical Despair. All I can say is that this has yet to happen, and if it does happen, I'll likely have no clue I've been listening to Steely Dan.

Well...I did bash death metal. But really Everyone has their own tastes so I am not judging anyone personally for listening to it. I have a big NO symbol over that whole genre cos I have yet to find a song in it that I can actually listen to.Tirigon wrote...

the only problem I have with death metal is that I really don´t know what exactly Death metal is, and what Black or trash or something like that........
Can´t tell the difference between the various extreme metal genres.

I dislike most modern day hip-hop as well. (Rap WAS awesome. Back when it actually meant something.)
I'm a metal head through and through.

To me...it's anything that relies on shrieking and screaming instead of singing coherently with metal music to back it up. That's my limited definition.Tirigon wrote...

Not to disagree with you. There's plenty of that.
However, a lot of death metal includes frontmen who can both sing and scream (not simultaneously of course, they have the drummer or bass player scream as a backup when necessary). That's the kind of music I prefer. A lyrical composition that includes excellent vocal skills with portions of screaming to punctuate the intense emotion. Plenty of bands do it well actually.

You may be right. For me any amount of screaming and yelling takes away the pleasure of listening and I just don't enjoy it. Each to their own though.Wicked 702 wrote...

It's completely dependant on the emotions you WANT to get out of your music. Death metal for you does not provoke a pleasurable reponse in your brain. Which I can completely understand.
I was raised mainly on classical music and jazz so shredding guitars and ear piercing screams are a bit of a far cry from my childhood. However, I like the emotional response the music provokes in me. I think that's part of the reason I find it aesthetically pleasing.

I really loathe rap though and all the upside down backwards visor cap wearing wusses who think listening to it makes them a "playa."

I'm definitely no fan of rap or country, and will avoid those genres if at all possible. I don't care if someone else likes them, I just think my brain isn't wired properly to enjoy them.

Country
Basically any of today's "artists"
Justin Beaver (I know it's Beaber, but that's what his name sounds like to me.)
Jonas Brothers
Hannah Montanah (she and Jonas ****s are old news I know but still...)
Keisha
Kanye West. (Although if it weren't for him I would've never found out about Daft Punk.

Now Lady Gaga, I can tolerate. I agree that Bad Romance is a good song. Although some of her other songs (Paparazi for instance) are pretty bad, but MUCH better compared to other artists.

Country - almost all of it
Most pop, especially pop bands that pretend to be rock bands.
Most rock from before the 90's (though that's less hate and more disinterest)
