See, I feel a bit like that about elves. But I agree - Anders/Cousland doesn't really work for me unless it's just meaningless sex. I think Cousland/Nate works so much better for all the right angsty reasons. Anders is meant to be with another mage - he's just too... magey not to have someone with magic. And if they weren't wardens think of the power-babies they'd have!

I feel the mage thing too.

My human aversion is odd I know - it started in EQ2 - I just can't do it if I'm given an alternative.  (Ratongas and Halflings for me in EQ2 though not elves...)

My prompt, prompt response.  I apparently do my best thinking on the bus.

"I certainly didn't expect that to happen!"

It wasn't the mixure of surprise and outrage in Anders' voice that made Oghren laugh, it was the look of utter shock on his face.

"Heh.  That'll teach you."

"We should have bet some gold."  Sigrun hid her grin behind the ale mug when Anders glared at her.  "I wouldn't have bet on you. Sorry Anders."

"Waste of good gold to bet on Anders.   I told you all, but no one listens to old Oghren."

"I'm not sure I should approve of betting on your fellow wardens.  Particularly not under those circumstances."

"Would have lost your gold on Anders Commander?"

"Probably.  I've lost faith in you Anders.  Lost.  Faith.  How could you let me down like this?"

"Hilarious Commander, hilarious."

"No, I'm serious.  All this time we've spent together, all those talks in the dining hall and what happens?  First trip we make as a group to Amaranthine, it falls apart.  I may have to consider finding a replacement healer.  I mean, what if everything you've told me is a lie?"  Lilibeth was more practiced at hiding her emotions and had no need of ale mug to keep her face impassive.

"Keep talking and I'll forget you're in charge."

"Oh ho! Now its threats from the widdle mage.  I'm sure after what's just happened the Commander is terrified."

"Shut up dwarf.  Before I turn you into a toad."

"Natural magic resistance."  Oghren shrugged and threw half his ale back in one swallow.  "You don't frighten me sparkle fingers."

"Maybe that's the problem."  Sigrun cleared her throat so she could finish the sentence.  "His fingers might  sparkle a bit too much.  If you get my meaning."

"What!?  You undersized stone muncher!  My fingers don't sparkle too much!" 

"Something obviously went wrong.  You started off well.  You had your intended target cornered.  I did notice you opened rather weakly but was impressed that you managed to rally."

"Commander.  You're really starting to annoy me." 

"A stun spell."  Sigun nodded firmly when they all turned to stare at her.  "He should open with a stun.  Put the target out of commission for a while.  Give you time to get into position." 

"Er. Yes, I suppose it would." Giving up on outrage, Anders shrugged and lifted his own mug.  "I tend to only use stuns on groups."

"Group, eh?  Nice strategy."  Oghren wondered if he'd have to reconsider his opinion of the mage.  "You often have groups?"

"It happens.  If you don't pay attention they can surround you."

"That's true."  Lilibeth allowed herself a small smile.  "It happens to me quite often.  One moment there's only one, then suddenly.  Three or four.  You can become trapped if they surround you."

"Do you use stuns on them?" 

"I have done, yes.  Odd how it takes them by surprise." 

"You'd think they'd expect it.  You are a mage after all."  Briefly envying the Commander's ability to stun, Sigrun sighed.  "I have to settle for hitting them with the pommel of my dagger."

"Not as elegant but still effective Sigrun."

Anders and Sigrun banged mugs in celebration of her effectiveness.

"I never get groups.  Takes me all my time to single out one."

"Aw Oghren.  We could find a group for you if you want?"  Sigrun put her arm across his back in sympathy.

"Well, if you're feeling friendly, we could.  Ouch!"

"Serves you right." Lilibeth lifted her mug to Sigrun.  "Don't take advantage of your fellow warden's kinder feelings."

Muttering darkly, Ohgren stared into his mug.  "Didn't get a chance to take advantage of anything.  Stone cursed female."

"This still doesn't explain what happened."  Honestly puzzled, Anders leaned his chin on his hand and tried to understand.  "Archers don't have stuns, do they?"

"One, I think.  Has a long draw time though."

"He didn't stun then.  What happened?  I was sure I was ahead.  Then 'bam' he's won."

"Ah Anders?"

"Hmm?"

"I think part of the reason might be Nate didn't realise you were competing."

"What?  No, he must have done." 

"Not unless you told him.  He just did what he'd normally do without worrying about beating you to the punch.  If you'll pardon the expression."  Oghren lifted his mug and waved it until the serving wench nodded.

"If that's true, which I'm not sure I believe, how in Thedas did he do it?  I had everything all planned and he strolls in and just wins?  Not possible."

Sigrun took pity on him and decided to explain.  "Let me tell you something Anders."

He waited but that appeared to be it.  "Yes?"

"What?  Oh, women can smell it when you're spinning a line.  Its like a gift from the ancestors."

"I wasn't spinning a line." Her head tilted. "Oh fine I was.  So what?  Howe just strolled up and said hello and she went all misty eyed. Forgot I was even standing there."

"Hello?  I'm sure he didn't just say hello."

"Fine.  He said 'good evening my lady' and she said 'oooh'. Then he bowed and just stood there." 

"Heh yep, I was right.  That whole quiet and stoic thing gets him a lot of action."

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Dev's were only thinking us when they didn't put romance into Awakenings.  How in the dickens could you choose?

Nine Anders/Amell fics on ffnet. Three of which are mine. So, not the only one, but close. No one likes poor Amell. Stuck with all the suck of being a mage without the pointy ears to make her exotic.
Eleven Anders/Surana, two are Miri's
Eleven Anders/Nathaniel
And fourteen Anders/Cousland.

I think my Amell and Anders probably have meaningless sex in Awakening but Angelique's too much of a parody of a Mary Sue for a real relationship. Since I'm planning on using her in this week's prompt, you guys will see what I mean.

I always think it's interesting how many people pair Anders with Nathaniel. I have to say I think Anders at least oozes heterosexuality - insomuch as he prefers women. I don't think he'd be too upset about a threesome with two guys, but I don't think he'd ever go completely that way, if you know what I mean?

Nathaniel I can't pick. My gaydar is completely blank with regards to him. And as a former career ****-hag my gaydar is pretty darn sensitive.

I suspect it's precisely because they're a pair of men who are both strong, but in completely different ways, and because they approach personal relationships (of the generic, not necessarily romantic, sort) in completely different ways.  It's the whole dark/light, day/night thing.  Oh, and of course, there's the fact that nobody thinks of either of those two men as blushing virgins or uncomfortable with the idea of sex. 

And, you know, two attractive men doing intimate things together?  I can see why a lot of heterosexual men think two women together is smokin'.

It's the robes line. The "not when I'm naked" bit when Nathaniel asks if he always wears robes. He does sound incredibly suggestive there, but I always took it as trying to make Nathaniel embarrassed or uncomfortable. Not flirty.

Yeah, but not all Couslands are meant to be with Alistair and any PC could end up with Alistair if he's hardened. I really dislike the princess consort ending, tbh, and don't see it as happily ever after (not that I'd like it any more if it were). My canon Alistair romance is an Amell who is his mistress and his chancellor. Brand wasn't even supposed to hook up with Alistair in the game and only did it because I loved how he responded to her smartassery during the romantic conversations. Even in the game I play it as being very goofy and physical and not that romantic. 

I apologize if this seems defensive, but I've gotten some flack for having a Cousland who isn't falling all over herself for a crown (never mind my story). When it comes to relationships in the game, my characters are driven by their personalities and not their origins. My Amell would hate Anders (and maybe even let the templars have him if there was any guarantee they were going to refrain from abusing him) and my Cousland finds him awesome.

Unless it's a pre-Blight thing (like Addai's fic), I absolutely could not ship any Cousland with Loghain, because of the way he supported Howe. 

Although, admittedly, I imagine Cousland who did spare Loghain, and married Al to Anora, enjoyed visiting the royals with him, if only so they could make Alistair that much more miserable.

I pair Anders up with an elven mage.  But she's not a warden so doesn't rate a name in the heading ;-)

My only Cousland so far managed to make herself the villian of the piece by stabbing Nate.  When that failed she coerced said mage to use Anders to kill him.  That's still continuing so on the off chance anyone but me reads my ff - I won't spoil the ending.

You know, now I see that in print, I'm wondering if my aversion to playing humans might be related to an embedded dislike for my species as a whole.   Let me get get back to you on that one.
