My 8th grade music teacher did a whole segment devoted to Starlight Express. It was...weird.

I'm uncreative, so my favorite musical productions are Les Mis and Chicago (although I do listen to the Sweeney Todd soundtrack way too much). I have a friend who wants me to see Wicked, but I read the book well before the musical was produced and cannnot shake my bafflement over how they went from that to the musical.

And I must be a specialized hag, because all my musical theatre loving gay friends are women. The men would all rather be at a ren faire or watching Star Trek.

I love Wicked but it really is nothing like the book. It's actually, dare I say it, fairly HAPPY. It's got some great music, though, so I dealt with it. I'm planning on watching Chicago as soon as I can find my mother's DVD for it but the songs I've heard from it I like. This might be kind of weird but my current favorite musical is 1776.

Ok, here is an Anders question for my fellow Anders experts

Do we think there is ever a point or situation where he could conceivably want to learn blood magic despite his dislike of it? Or is that just the line he'll never cross, no matter what?

Want to? No. I think he could be convinced to, if he knew he'd never be expected to use it towards any bad end.

I think his issue with blood magic has more to do with the control aspect of it and the fact that it's basically an anti-mage trump card. No doubt he trusts himself with the power, but it would still carry that stigma and (to some people) justify why mages shouldn't be let off the Chantry leash.

Lupus, he doesn't object when we give him that specialization ;)

I guess he can be convinced to learn it. Or manipulated to learn it. For example, we recruit a woman, she drinks blood, survives, then we discover that she's pregnant and the only way to save her baby is to use Avernus' technique to slow her taint. I think that can force Anders to learn blood magic.

I totally forgot Sweeney Todd was a musical. In my mind it is too much tied into drooling over Johnny Depp to remember the singing. He is so absurdly hot in that. Painfully absurdly hot. Umf.

Shame on me, I actually dressed as Mrs. Lovett for Halloween a couple years ago (the black corset, brown shirt with lace, and ruffle-backed skirt she has on at the beginning of the movie). I even made a felt meat pie with a zipper on the side to use as a purse!

Hm...

I totally agree with you on the anti-mage trump card, and I've had him say as much in my fic. I'm also playing with an idea for the future.

More thought is required, though. I may be able to get it to work, but... not sure.

Maggie would never try and convince him to learn it, though. She doesn't even offer to teach the mages they recruit, she waits until they ask her.

yeah, gotta say I'm in agreement with Surely there. I think he could be convinced but it'd have to be with four ranks of coercion and like 100 points of cunning ... And even then, I doubt he'd use it unless it was absolutely dire. And he might still lose approval even on being convinced.

That sounds like the best costume ever.

Also, I am now listening to Sweeney Todd. Dammit, this chapter is so screwed.

Hm. I think people will be angry with me.

(reconsidering next few chapters now in a fit of indecisiveness)

and it was the best costume ever! I won like three contests with it, one with a guy dressed like Sweeney Todd. We spontaneously decided to enter a contest as a couple despite not knowing each other since the couple costumes all sucked but the single ones were really good and it gave us way better odds to win. Which we did. Unfortunately the prize was a bar tab, and after running through that I had a bit of a Maggie-moment...

I'm always tempted to reuse it since it was crazy-warm which is great where I live, but the corset is a bit too big now. Those things aren't forgiving on weight fluctuations. And I don't know if the movie is too old for people to get it now.

I'm doing Wonder Woman this year, but with a skirt instead of the granny panties since I just won't show that much thigh in public. I really need to get started on that...

Lupus, I think if you want him to ASK to learn blood magic you need to get him in a situation where only blood magic would save his friends - aka your last chapter of Blue Skies - Maggie asks because she NEEDS it. If Maggie was in danger or severely wounded because Anders ran out of mana I think he'd probably beg her to teach him.

I also think he wouldn't like the thought of hurting someone else (even it it wasn't lasting) in order for him to be stronger. And he probably wouldn't like the pain of hurting himself to do it.  I always see him as not liking pain, for some reason.

But maybe upon seeing it used, and seeing no ill effects AND also seeing how it saved lives when you're at that desperate point with no lyruim -- he might be willing, thinking of it as a "back-up" plan.

(edit: Yes, what Miri said. I guess I took too long to type!)

And also - I <3 Sweeney Todd. The first time I saw it was on cable, and I think I watched it three times in a row. Johnny Depp, the songs, Johnny Depp.

I like Wicked  -- completely and totally different from the book.   But I love Chicago & Cabaret.   Give me a dark theme and sex, and I guess I'm happy.

2nd edit: And instead of getting Sweeney Todd stuck in my head, I now have "He had it coming" (Cell Block Tango) from Chicago on repeat. This doesn't bode well for writing. Someone just might run into my knife. They might run into my knife ten times.

@Surely - Brand's not skanky!

Re Blood magic for Anders - if its still up for discussion - I think he'd only use it if he had to supplement his mana. Can you use Blood magic to supplement healing. I wrote a fic once where he uses Blood sacrifice to heal someone else. Not sure if thats actually possible. I had him channelling it through himself into the patient. Good thing that's hiding on my hdd and will never see the light of day ;-)

Yes you can - I spec Wynne with blood magic because I love the irony and it makes it sooo much easier to get through big battles. You set her up on a hill and swap between normal and blood magic and everyone's health stays up. Also good for reviving party members - a quick swap to blood magic and voila!

*eyes half closed* ahh the deliciousness of Wynne the Blood mage.

Pity she doesn't keep stabbing herself repeatedly in the face after she's spec'd as one...or is that bit violent for this time of the morning?

(Writing about Wynne right now)
(enjoying the thought of her stabbing herself in the face)

I've also realized that the next chapter of BOTH my stories will involve people on boats. I did not plan this intentionally.

This was my thought as well.  Hm.  I can't see any other situiation working for him.
Ugh.  I really don't want to spoiler.

I wanted to!  I wasn't there yet.  I had to get them past Jowan and all in Blue Skies and home from Denerim so they could leave for Jader in AOA.  And that is where they both are now.  (and maggie's finally a blood mage in both! But I have to figure out how Zevran will react now.)

I figure Zevran will be sanguine about it - what needs to be done and all that. I'll be interested in finding out how Alistair reacts initially though!

Funnily enough, your Alistair has rekindled some of my old spark for him :). He's just so lovable in Blue Skies. And very, very distinct from Anders. I'm always a bit worried that my Alistair and Anders are too similar, especially in their dialogue choices. I get around it by saying that they ARE pretty similar in game, except that Anders uses more innuendo, but I still feel a bit like their conversation could be interchanged sometimes...

I think Alistair's so innocent in a lot of ways, but trying desperately not to be, especially surrounded with that crowd. He doesn't want to stand out as such, and I think he's also younger than most of them, except maybe the Warden, so that doesn't help. I think that makes him go with the flow a lot more than he normally would.
I have a bad tendency to make him a bit too goofy fratboyish on occasion, though. But in a way he really is a bit like that, and with cause. He spent years in the chantry surrounded by men, and then became a grey warden, again surrounded by men. I think he has no concept of how to deal with women so he'll either treat them like he would a guy, or get nervous. So, it wouldn't occur to him that saying a girl eats like a pig is a bad idea since he'd say the same thing to a guy. (for example)

In terms of the differences between them, I don't necessarily think Anders is smarter than Alistair, but he's far more willing to display his intelligence. Alistair isn't going to be using five dollar words just because he's had it ingrained into him not to do anything to make himself stand out. Anders' dialogue, in game, seems to use much more complex language, both dialogue/word choice and sentence construction wise. He's also prone to bad jokes, but not self-deprecating ones. "My" Alistair is all about the self-deprecating humor.

At least, that's how I write/see them.

You guys are inspiring me to try to write an Alistair story. I like to write Nate and Anders because I'm not as constrained by other people's frameworks.

I would like to see Ali get a happy ending though. He so rarely does in my playthroughs. And truthfully I'm a bit afraid of Alistair fan girls - they're scary...

Anders and Alistair together when you all write it is always hilarious. I wonder how they'd go being Grey Wardens together?

I love writing the two of them together. SO MUCH. I find excuses to bring my characters to Denerim just so Alistair can hang out with them.

Oooh... not Anders, but it is mage-related...

Someone who has a basically-done recruitable Jowan mod just asked me to redo the dialogue for it. :D

SO psyched since, well, JOWAN!

Well done you :)

Recruitable Jowan - nice.  Can you swap out Morrigan for him ;-) (Not that she gets past Lothering with my girls anyway but still there's that empty space at camp).

Quick an Anders fix:

You should write some Alistair! I prefer Alistair fic written by non-fangirls (or by fangirls who can break away from Alistair worship and give him some dimension). And fangirls of any character can be scary/demoralizing, to be honest, so you should just do what you want to do.
