@Sabreene: Why do things always get more eventful when the commanders leave? At least Anders seemed to eventually enjoy the responsibility.

@sabreene, aww, I'm glad Anders was rewarded by the cat lady! But I didn't got it why the commander didn't want them to talk. Was she jealous or something?

@Avilia & Surely & Jenn (for both, x2!!) -- Thank you!!

@Sarah - It's some weird kind of universal rule, when someone goes on vacation the powers that be laugh and decide to throw every problem your way.

@Gala - I accidentally cut a line while editing. The commander is also supposed to say that the woman is new & an unknown quantity. I think she'd rather she was around for Anders exploits with her, just in case she turned out to be unbalanced.

Needed an Anders

I wish I had a ginormous cat hanging around. My office is cold and I'd like to curl up against one of them for a change.

That pic is just the best. I can sooo see Anders daydreaming that and trying to figure out a way to make Pounce bigger just so he can ride on him. A bit like Alistair wanting to ride on a golem...

Wouldn't a ginormous cat have ginormous fleas? (I do love that picture).

Anders could magic a new kind of Frontline, keeping him flea-free! Either that, or Nate would have to mix of a gallon of flea poison... I vote magic!

I think Anders could get a lot of frustration out blasting giant fleas with lightning.

In the absence of other ways for him to get out his frustration and assuming that he's frustrated, of course.

Mmm. I get the impression that he doesn't let himself get frustrated often. In the Tower, perhaps. Doodling tigers eating Templars would only go so far, of course.

God, I love that little reference in Witch Hunt. I can so see teenage Anders doing that. And possibly getting figurines and acting it out a-la Alistair.

OOOOh, Fic Idea! *runs off*

So, I'll say this is AU since I couldn't figure out a reason for Anders to be in chage short of Maggie being severely injured and I've done enough mopey prompts lately, and I don't think he would really think she sat around chatting with Nate all day.

I Don't Want Your Job

“You were looking for me?” Anders walked into the office shared by Maggie and Nathaniel. She was sitting at her enormous desk, half hidden behind stacks of papers.

“You’re not going to like this,” she warned. He sat down and waited for her to go on. “I need to go out. Now. Some sort of issue between two of the nobles. They’re about to start ripping each other apart.”

“All right,” Anders said. “Should I go pack?”

She made a face. He didn’t like that face. “No…” Maggie began, looking back at her desk and shuffling some papers around.

“Oh, will you spit it out already,” he said, getting annoyed. She hated to give him bad news so it could take an hour before she managed to get everything out.

“You have to stay here. In charge. While I’m gone.”

“Me?” Anders stared at her, shocked. She’d never gone, well, anywhere without him. Ever.

“Yes.”

“No.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Are you really going to make me order you?”

“Why me? Why can’t I go with you?”

She sighed. “Because Nathaniel and Sigrun are visiting his sister, Aidan, Rose and Roland are in Denerim, Varel’s visiting his kids, and, well, that’s everyone I’d ask before you.”

“You’d ask Aidan before me? He’s nineteen.

“He wouldn’t try and refuse,” she pointed out. “And he just turned twenty, remember? Come on. You know I’d rather have you with me. It’ll only be for a couple days.”

Anders groaned, kicking her desk. “Fine. This is going to be painfully boring, isn’t it? All you do is stare at paperwork all day.”

“That is far from all I do,” she said.

“Right,” Anders said. “Come on, half the time I come down here you and Nathaniel are just talking, not even working. I’m going to be sitting here staring at a wall bored senseless for days. I’ll have to cancel all my classes. And I’ll have to sleep alone after? Really boring.”

“For one night,” she said. “And is that really all you think I do all day? Seriously?”

“I know it’s all you do,” he laughed.

She just shook her head.

An hour later Anders kissed her goodbye at the gate and waved as she rode off, accompanied by three of the younger Wardens. He suspected she would have tried to go alone if it wasn’t for him watching her leave. But… even though no one was actively trying to kill her at the moment, it never hurt to travel in a group. He hadn’t even made it to the door before someone stopped me. “Problem, Sparklefingers,” Oghren said.

“Oh?”

“Yeah. You might want to come deal with this one in person.”

Anders followed him to see a very angry man in the yard, screaming at one of the rogues. “You’ve disgraced my family’s honor!” he was shouting. “Now who will marry my daughter?!”

“Oh please, like I was the first one there. And she’s a grown woman!”

Anders sighed. Eventually he managed to get the angry father to leave since, really, his daughter was a grown woman. It wasn’t as though the warden went after some teenager… she turned out to be five years older than him.

“Tobias,” he said, turning to the rogue.

“Yeah, Mr. Boss?”

“All right, if you call me that again I will set you on fire. And please, can you try and limit your… entertainment to ladies without extremely overprotective fathers?”

“You’re no fun,” he said. “Real-Boss just laughs once they go away.”

“Well then I’m no fun,” Anders said.

Tobias shook his head before wandering off.

He had finally begun climbing the steps to go back inside when Garavel stopped him. “I need you to approve this,” he said, shoving something in front of Anders.

“Can it wait for Maggie or Nate?”

“No.”

Anders scanned the paper. “What is this?”

“The new equipment arrived, but they’re telling us it’s more than the price we negotiated.”

“What? No!” Anders snapped. “Maggie will have my head if I agree to that!” He followed Garavel to the wagon where half a dozen ballistas- and why in the Maker’s name did Maggie think they needed those- were stacked high.

“Yeah….” The driver said. “There were some, uh, complications. So the price we gave you, it’s no good now.”

“You’re sure about that?” Anders said, glaring at him.

“Yup.”

Anders sighed, holding his hands out until lightning arced from one to the other. “I repeat. You’re sure you want to cheat the Grey Wardens?”

The driver paled. “You… you know, we did have a deal. So, um, let’s just call it even. How’s that work?”

“That’s what I thought,” Anders replied.

Finally making it back into the Keep he was stopped by an angry cook. “Ser Anders,” she bellowed, waving a wooden spoon. “How am I supposed to work when the food I make for meals is eaten before I can even serve it!? I made six dozen rolls for dinner. Six dozen since everyone here eats like they’re headed to the gallows! Well I leave for but a moment, just to get some eggs from the coop, come back and two dozen are gone. Can you tell me why two dozen rolls disappear in seconds? I can’t make more in time. What do you expect me to do? The dough won’t rise, ser! It simply will not rise in time if I start a batch now. I cannot work in these conditions! Why do you people eat so much? It defies all reason! You should be big as houses!”

He stepped back. She was still waving the spoon. “If we run out we run out,” Anders told her. “I’ll let everyone know it’s their own fault.”

“Harumph,” she said, storming off.

Sitting at Maggie’s desk he opened the first letter. It was in Warden code. It took him three hours to decipher it, being interrupted for everything from a request for new armor to a change in training schedules to people wanting permission to go into town to a horse running away.

It ended up being nothing more than a summary of Maggie’s last report to Weisshaupt to confirm it was received.
Garavel was at the door again, just as Anders was almost finished staring at the letter in shock and disgust on how much time he wasted doing something so pointless. “Yes?”

“Caught some poachers,” he said. “What should we do with them?”

“They can wait in a cell until Maggie or Nathaniel is here,” he said. “I don’t even think I even have the legal authority to sentence them.”

“You are married to the ruling lord,” Garavel pointed out. “And, well, locking them up might not be wise.” Garavel gestured and another guard walked in, holding two children that couldn’t be more than twelve by their shirt collars.

“Aren’t they a bit young for poachers?” Anders said, horrified.

“We didn’t know it was your land, Ser!” the older said. Anders looked at the captain of the guard.

“They were caught very close to the border of our property.”

“You know it’s our land now?” Anders said. The children nodded. “So this won’t happen again?” Another nod, even more forceful. “All right then. We’ll let you off with a warning. Next time we tell your parents.”

They thanked him and the guard escorted them out.

“You know parents send their children out just so they can poach,” Garavel said before leaving. He could have mentioned that before.

He was barely out the door before Oghren was back. “New hopefuls just arrived.”

“And?” Anders said, not sure what it had to do with him.

“One says he’s a mage. The other two stink. You need to get rid of them.”

“Why me?” Oghren only laughed, taking a sip from his flask.

Sighing, Anders went outside. “I’m sorry,” he told the first two. “We don’t need any more warriors right now.”

“I’m an archer,” one said.

“Well… we don’t need any of those either. Maybe check back in a couple months?”

With a sigh they left. He turned to the mage. And narrowed his eyes.

“You… you take blood mages, right?” the man asked, clearly nervous. His eyes darted from side to side. “Since, um. I’m one. A blood mage.”

“No you’re not,” Anders said.

“What?” the man looked surprised. “Yes I am. See, I have this knife here.”

“No. You’re not a blood mage. To be a blood mage you would need to first be a mage.”

“What?”

“What’s the point of this?” Anders sighed, looking at him. “I can tell you’re not a mage. You might be able to fool a dwarf but you won’t fool me.”

The man sighed. “Look, I just lost a bet. You… you’re not going to kill me, are you?”

“I will if you’re not out of my sight by the time I count to ten.”

The man turned, taking off at a run. Not being used to wearing robes… since he wasn’t a mage, he fell several times before making it to the gates.

He was grabbed by the arm by Wade before he could go back inside, who wanted to know about… something. In truth, what Anders knew about armor would fit on the head of a pin, and he had no idea if one style of pauldron, whatever that was, would be better than another. “The commander trusts you implicitly,” he said. “Do whatever you think is best.” That seemed to satisfy the temperamental smith who grinned before returning to his shop.

Returning to the office he tried to go through the rest of the mail, finding the vast majority simply couldn’t be answered by him. He didn’t know if they could spare any mages for the Wardens of the Free Marches. He had no idea what their winter grain situation looked like. He certainly wasn’t about to agree to sell any of their dogs from the kennels or buy any more horses.

Woolsey cornered him before he could make it to dinner, insisting that he simply must go over expense reports now. No wonder Maggie couldn’t stand her. By the time he was done the food was cold and, well, mostly gone.
Returning to the office after his thoroughly unsatisfying meal, Anders began to go over the garrison assignments.

Yawning, he pushed the paper aside for just a moment.

“Awwww… would you look at that.”

“Serves him right.”

“I think he looks adorable.”

“You would. I’m just glad he’s drooling on your desk.”

Blinking, Anders looked up. Maggie and Nathaniel were standing over him grinning.

“What?”

“Remember last week when you told Aidan you wished you had one of our jobs since we just sit behind desks all day while you have to teach?” Nathaniel said.

“Maybe?” Anders said, wincing. He did remember saying something not entirely unlike that. He didn’t, however, realize Nathaniel was listening.

“Payback,” was all Maggie said.

“What?” he said, shocked.

“Sigrun and I have been in our room all day,” Nathaniel said. “We got back last night.”

“I’ve been at Jowan’s,” Maggie added.

“So… the angry father, the cook, the ballistas?”

“The what?” Maggie said. “Oh, did they get here? Good. I’ll have them installed on the battlements tomorrow. Can never be too prepared.”

“All we did was disappear,” Nathaniel said, smirking. “Everything else? A normal day.”

“I hate you both,” Anders said.

Maggie laughed, pulling him to his feet. “No you don’t. Come on, let’s go to bed. I already had to cook send some decent food up, rumor has it you worked through dinner.”

“I don’t want your job,” Anders said as they walked upstairs. “I admit it. Teaching is easier. Much easier. And you don’t sit around gossiping with Nathaniel all day.”

“That’s all I wanted to hear,” she said, squeezing his hand. “And look on the bright side. You don’t have to sleep alone tonight.”

Anders smirked. “I just had a nap. You honestly expect that either of us will be sleeping tonight?” Maggie laughed before taking off for their room at a run.

Oh, I know normal teaching isn't.  I did a stint of student teaching and that was enough to convince me I'd rather stick with college kids so I didn't have a nervous breakdown.  But Anders teaches healing spells to grown adults, in groups no bigger than half a dozen at once.  So, not really the same thing as dealing with a bunch of kids.

True :). Just had to get my two cents in, though.

I had Anders doing a few classes of teenage apprentices. One of the main reasons I think he wanted to escape REALLY BADLY. Imagine a class full of kids who could LITERALLY set their work on fire... *shudders*

My prompt fill:

When the Earth Moves

He pushed his hair out of his eyes, wet with sweat and blood and Maker-knew-what-else and reached for another lyrium potion. Sigrun's breath was coming fast and short and he knew if he didn't stop the bleeding in her lungs she would drown. Andraste curse her for making him attend to every one else in the entire keep before she'd let him even approach her to find out how she'd been injured. It had only been because she'd collapsed that he'd been able to get close enough to treat her.

Neria was safely tucked up in their room, asleep, Maker willing she'd recover fully in a few hours. Nate and Oghren were both unconscious but mostly healed - Armand and Branwen were dealing with them. Garic and Gabrielle were absent in the deep roads. Varel was with his wife in Amaranthine.

"Earthquakes," Anders muttered under his breath as he worked. "Why didn't we plan for earthquakes." He shuddered to think of what might have happened to Garic and Gabrielle in the Deep Roads and made a mental note to send a team down to check if there had been any cave ins in the area they'd been scouting.

It was that thought that brought his other situation home to him. All of the senior wardens were incapacitated or absent. He was the only one conscious who'd been a warden longer than six months.

He was, technically, in charge.

"Stupid dwarf," he muttered as he worked at clearing the fluid out of Sigrun's lungs. "Stoicism is Nathaniel's trait. You should have told me you were about to pass out and I would have stopped it. Do you have any idea what you've done to me?"

It seemed the others in the keep were coming to the same realisation. Armand was the first to approach him. He and the elf had never really gotten along, but Anders respected his healing ability and had a grudging understanding of why the elf had never liked him.

"There are wounded all over the place," Armand said. "We've managed to get to the most serious cases, we think but.."

"Set up a hospital in the main hall," Anders said. "Don't try to move them into the infirmary - there are enough people in there already and the main hall is easier to get to."

Armand nodded firmly and left, obviously glad to have a job to do. Anders swallowed, finishing his healing spell and activating Combat Magic to make it easier to carry Sigrun to where they would set up the makeshift hospital.

Armand had got there before him and was directing servants to bring linens and hot water. Branwen, he was relieved to notice, was also there, working on the injured. He truly didn't have enough healing magic left to help them, having poured most of it into his fellow senior wardens. He wished, now, that he hadn't been so liberal with the sedative side of it. He'd give a lot to see an awake Nathaniel right now.

When Sigrun was comfortably settled Anders stood to find at least three wardens waiting to talk to him. He ran his hand through his hair, which had come loose from its tie, and heaved a sigh.

"Yes?"

"Ser Anders," he didn't even know who the warden was, but she looked about twelve years old. Maker knew what skills she had, Anders knew she wasn't a mage but he couldn't imagine such a tiny girl stabbing darkspawn for a living. "The deep roads entrance has been blocked by rubble again. Dworkin's insisting he can clear it.."

"No and no," Anders said quickly. "The last thing we need is more vibrations running through the keep. Get back to him and tell him he does not have the Commander's permission to do anything." The girl nodded and turned to go. The second warden was Maric - ambitiously named by his parents - an excellent sword and shield man. "What is it man?"

"The ballistas on the north wall have been damaged by falling masonry...."

... and so it began. The list of problems that had to be dealt with seemed to get longer as the night wore on. Anders was frazzled and harried and he smelt bad and his eyes hurt and all he wanted was to curl up in a bath with a book but there was no water because the well had been choked with dust and had to be cleared...

A few hours past midnight he managed to make it back to the main hall. Despite not having sat in ten hours, his mana had replenished enough so that he could use some healing magic again and it was a palpable relief to sink down next to Sigrun's bedroll and concentrate on something he knew rather than delegating the endless run of tasks that seemed to need to be done.

Sigrun stirred in her sleep as he attended her, but despite her injuries showing a lot of improvement, Anders didn't give into the temptation to wake her up. He knew if he did she'd just tire herself out, and one thing he did intend to take away from this experience was a possible collection of I owe you, Anders that could conceivably keep him on light duties until the end of the year.

He hadn't realised that he'd nodded off until he felt a gentle hand on his shoulder. He looked up into the twinkling dark eyes of Neria, who was looking thank the maker whole and beautiful and everything he'd ever wanted in a woman. Upright, competent and used to command notwithstanding.

"I love you," he said.

She laughed.
