This is a bit of a one woman thread at the moment, but I finished my prompt response. I swear, I TRIED to make it cheerful and funny. I DID.

The Art of Lying

"I was just talking to her!" To Portia's father, Benjamin Smith, the largest man in highever and handy with a hammer. Anders trembles in his boots but lifts his head and fixes the man with his most innocent gaze. He's brushed his hair and ironed his shirt and even cleaned his boots - the very picture of a neat and eligible teenager. He knows he looks several years younger than the man's daughter (he is) and he also knows Portia will sell him out as soon as look at him despite the heady and steamy moments they'd been stealing everywhere around the town for the past month. He has to make the man believe him or there is a very real chance he'll be flogged in the square for assault.

He has learned to be very good at lying. But he avoids Portia from then on. Sometimes it's better to sidestep danger.

"You're charms won't work on me, woman!" To the Warden Commander, Miranda Cousland, as she jokes about his claustrophobia in the deep roads. She has a way with her, of distracting him from his troubles. Distracting him from them, or beheading them, the way she had with Rylock and her cronies. It's incredibly sexy. Thinking about sex in the deep roads is far preferable to thinking about how dark it is. And heavy. And dark. Breasts and hips and night-dark hair and grey twinkling eyes... these are far, far preferable.

Although sometimes they make walking difficult.

"It's not the size that counts, Velanna." In this case, it is.

"Of course I don't mind." Through gritted teeth to Nathaniel Howe as he smoothly invites his sister to dinner in Amaranthine. His sister fixes him with her cheerful dark gaze, a slight smirk on her lips as she contemplates her half-brother. There is no way Maeve could know him that well - they've only been reunited recently. He grins at her, then at Nathaniel, trying with all his might to convey his thoughts to the dark haired rogue.

If you touch her I'll freeze you solid.

Nathaniel simply raises an eyebrow.

"Nothing can tie me down." To Neria one morning after they return from Orlais, changed, certainly. Older, definitely. More free. She smiles that quirky little smile of hers and shakes her head. She can always tell when he's lying.

"You'll be all right." To his mother. To a dying warden, in the deep roads. To a child in the elven Alienage of Highever, wracked with fever. To an old carthorse, a wounded bird, a beloved, ancient, ginger cat.

To himself in the morning, imagining the mottled grey of corruption spreading across his skin, or worse, hers

He's very, very good at telling that lie. It's a shame it's always the hardest to believe.

I think an Oghren story would be so awesome. He's honestly one of my favorite NPCs in the game. I've given him bits and pieces of a backstory but nothing major. I gave him a sister that met a Bad End, since he mentioned his parents drank and I wanted to invent a reason why. His stories of youthful drunkenness always struck me as just that- a young man sowing his wild oats, as it were. Not the early stages of a complete mess.

There's one guy in Orzammar, the gossip just inside the doors to the diamond quarter, who talks about how much promise Oghren had before Branka left him. That kind of makes me think he wasn't always this hopeless drunk, her leaving did that to him.

He really is an incredibly tragic character.

Yeah, Loilinar Ivo tells you that the only reason a member of the warrior caste like Oghren got away with killing the son of Lord Meino in a first blood Proving with only a prohibition from carrying weapons in the city was because he used to be a great hero of the Deep Roads. Not to mention that Branka's skill would have been obvious long before she became a Paragon so chances were that she was married to a promising member of the warrior caste.

@Avilia, Sarah & Lupus Thanks :). I SOOO tried to make it funny. What is it about one shots and Anders that make themselves tragic?

I like to think the best of Oghren before Branka got her claws into him as well - that woman was seriously ****ed up.

They really do, don't they?
I wonder why that is. Maybe because his outward personality is so happy go lucky, you really need to get deep into his head to see anything more most of the time.

I notice you've put little hints in your last couple one-shots about Fractures, yes? Mentions of it being post-Orlais... makes me wonder what you've got planned.

It is kind of addictive. I got a little taste of it and just went bat**** with the misery.

I really felt like I should be doing an evil laugh for a while there every time I updated.

I blame all of you, BTW.

@Lupus: we all just want an excuse to cuddle him, I think. That's my take on it any way. And who wouldn't want to cuddle this:

@Lupus
It's okay if he's kind of d**k. It works for him... Plus, that makes it loads better when he decides to be nice. XD

@Miri
I seriously teared up at the last bit. I have a friend who's an ER nurse and she says that's the worst bit, telling people they'll be fine when you know that they won't. She says she's gotten so good at lying about it that sometimes she almost believes herself. Gah, that would kill me. -sad face-

And Dread Pirate Anders! From this thread at the People of Thedas comm. Thanks to Miri for the idea. ;3

The sketch is Gala's - but if you mean the story, thanks :)

@Cave I have already expressed my undying love for you and your Dread Pirate Anders, but I shall do so again. I love you. And your Dread Pirate Anders. Forever.

Oh, and thanks!

Seconding Miri. That is wickedly hot.

And thanks. I like my characters kind of f'd up. People who are nice right from the box aren't as much fun for me to write since I feel like there's nowhere to go. Unless I want to mess them up, and I like happy endings too much.

Thanks ya'll. ^_^

I'm a fan of having everybody start off at least a little rough around the edges, breaking them down, and then everybody being happy in a messed up sort of way at the end of things. It's no fun if your characters don't have at least a minor moment of clarity.

Very true. And I think there's a bit of reason to think Anders was something of a playboy. His comment about the reason he liked the robes and how women were like "moths to a flame" when he had Ser Pounce a Lot with him certainly make him seem like one.

Oh I SAW. Was about to add comment there!

In other news, I've worked out how to make my Oghren story involve Anders as well. Damn it, this is what happened with Shades. I've got to AT LEAST finish Fractures before I start a new one...

I really love the idea of Anders and Oghren secretly being BFF and the teasing as all in fun. They're both so clever with insults and wordplay, I suspect they secretly get a kick out of tossing witty jabs back and forth since it gives them a chance to be smartasses and both know the other won't really be offended.

I'm ashamed to say I did. I couldn't get past the HOW it happens thing and it just killed the mood. HOWEVER, I like to think Maggie is actually somewhere in the Fractures universe - although it feels wrong for her to be there and not with Anders. She would have taken part in Uldred's rebellion but realised it was a raw deal and escaped at the same time as Anders did - off in a different direction to be an apostate in Antiva or something :). And Marina is still with the wardens in Orlais and Brandelyn Cousland is actually Brandelyn some-other-high-ranked-noble, although she doesn't work quite so well considering she would no longer be an absolute BAMF without the warden/spirit warrior thing. I could have all these AU versions of the girls meet Anders... Huh, now I think I might have found a way around the whole HOW it happens! Might have to go back and do it...

And Oghren and Anders are SOO BFF. I love their banter.
