@Avilia I loved it sooo much. You almost make me like Velanna.

Oh, and did you check in at the Australian Dragon Age II fans thread? Tell me you did! There's got to be some sort of event planned... I'm so going. Even if I have to pawn the kids off.

TOP TWO MORE TO GO:

Thanks to LupusYondergirl for permission to use Maggie. I have a whole alternative history worked out for her to exist in my fic universe as well as her own. She's just too awesome to be confined to one.

Jealousy

Mail came through the Keep fairly regularly these days, and Neria even had her own office in which to sort through it. It was a chore she actually enjoyed - the peace and quiet of her office made a nice change from the practice fields or the dining hall. Wardens weren't known for their quiet and studious ways, and Neria sometimes found herself nostalgic for the soft whispers of the Tower library.

Anders was with her, writing in one of his spellbooks. He liked to make free with her office (considering it had once been his office) and had quickly realised she preferred her work space to be silent (or at least as silent as it could be, given some of the things they did there).

There was a knock at the door and Sigrun poked her head in. "Mail," she said.

Anders laughed and got to his feet. "Commander, since when do you do mail delivery?" he said.

She grinned. "Since there's a letter from Antiva for you. I'm curious about who they've got to replace Natal as head of the mages."

"Ooooh, goody," Anders said, snatching the envelope from her and opening it.

"Hey, last I checked I was supposed to be in charge here," Neria said.

Anders gave her his most charming grin and she, of course, melted. He opened the letter and scanned it, his eyes widening and his jaw dropping as he did so.

"What?" Neria said. "What is it?"

Anders handed her the letter. "Now, that's got to be the most unexpected thing I have read this week. Even including that passage in..."

"The Commander doesn't need to know about your taste in literature, Anders," Neria said.

"Oh, please go on!" Sigrun said. "Zevran and I..." Neria scanned the letter to reach the signature at the bottom, not hearing her Commander's chirpy voice as she educated Anders about her love life.

"Margaret Amell??"

Anders was giving her a look. "Fantastic, isn't it?" Anders said. "I had no idea she'd even survived the rebellion!"

"Oh, I knew she survived the rebellion," Neria said, her voice almost cracking with fury. "But Margaret Amell, a warden? What on Thedas were they thinking??"

"I take it you know this woman?"

Anders was practically bouncing from foot to foot. "Maggie's Ferelden," he explained to Sigrun. Maggie, Neria noted, suddenly even more furious. He called her Maggie..."She was one of the best... Sided with Uldred, though, from what I heard. I assumed she'd died with the rest of the blood mages."

Neria had a brief flash of memory. Maggie and she, face to face in the library before Wynne had raised the barrier. Maggie's cool green eyes appraising her. She and Jowan had been friends and she was already damned for letting him go.

Maggie had offered to help. Neria had believed her. Neria had let her go. Later, when her name came up as one of those who had gone over to Uldred, Neria had fumed. But by the time Commander Cousland and the others had arrived Maggie had managed to find her way out of the tower. Neria had assumed she'd turned apostate and fled, but really, it made sense that she'd end up a warden - the woman had always been slightly crazy about them.

"You look angry, my love," Anders was saying.

"That woman is a complete menace," she said. "I can't believe they're trusting her with command."

Anders cocked an eyebrow at her. "Come on, Neria. She's not that bad."

"Oh, of course you would say that," she muttered, looking down to read the letter more thoroughly.

Neria,

I'm guessing you're just the tiniest bit shocked to hear about my current position. I certainly was. Turns out the Antivan wardens are more impressed with the size of my fireballs than my administrative abilities. In any case, Natal thought I'd fit the bill for this job and it's a bit difficult to turn down the request of a man who's about to head into the deep roads to be killed.

I made it to Antiva just before the end of the blight. The wardens found me before the Templars, luckily, and you can probably guess the rest. Part of me wanted to come back to Ferelden as soon as I could, but Antiva's actually not half bad when you get to know it, and before I really knew it, it became a home for me, of sorts. So here I am.

I wanted to write to you personally as I know we didn't exactly part on the best of terms. Please believe me when I tell you I had no idea Uldred was possessed. None of us did. And I know you tried to help Jowan. That means a lot to me.

I suppose there's not much else to say. Just believe that I'm a warden, first and foremost, whatever else you might have heard about me, and I hope if we meet in the future we'll do so as such, and not as anything else.

In Peace, Vigilance,

Margaret Amell.

P.S. Is it true Anders is a warden over there? You've got to say hello to him for me!

She'd almost been sympathetic to the woman. Right up to the postscript. "Nice to know she remembers me!" Anders was saying, grinning that damnable grin.

Neria shot him with a lightning bolt, scrunched the letter up, threw it in the fireplace, and stormed out of the room.

~~~
Later, in their room, Anders crept in almost as quietly as Pounce. "Neria?" he said. She angrily wiped tears from her eyes and bit her lip as he sat on the bed next to her. He took her hand, which she left limp in his, refusing to meet his eyes. "What is it?" She shook her head. Truly, she wasn't even sure why she was upset. He sat next to her, stroking her hand with his warm fingers.
"It's about Maggie, isn't it?" he said finally. She pressed her lips together. "Neria, please. I need you to give me something here."
She blew her breath out her nose. "Yes. It's about Maggie."
"We were over long before..."
"Maker, I know that," she interrupted. "I know you're not... with her... it's just... she was so sodding crazy... and you used to be the same and sometimes I think I've killed something in you and perhaps you should have ended up with her instead..."
He pulled her into his embrace and hugged her tightly. "You're a complete idiot," he said. "Truly, the stupidest woman alive."
"Not helping."
"Maggie and I... we had a lot of fun. But the same could be said about Maggie and at least ten other people... possibly more... in the Tower. I'm glad she's ok, but I'm a different person now."
She looked at him, his hazel eyes showing wrinkles at the edges - from laughter, not worry - his full lips always ready to smile, even in the direst circumstances.
"Is that my fault?" she asked.
He grabbed her chin and turned her face to his. "Yes of course it is. But trust me when I say it's a good thing."
She let out a breath and closed her eyes. "I love you," she whispered.
He kissed her, slowly and thoroughly and so, so sweetly that she melted against him. When they parted he was smirking at her and she had to resist the urge to zap him again. "I love you too," he said. "Always, always believe that."
She closed her eyes and leant her head against his chest. Sod you, Maggie Amell, she thought.
But she was smiling when she thought it.
@Lupus - thanks :) Sigrun isn't as clever as she thinks she is - or maybe its just her experience with duster men ;-)
@Miri thanks :) I seem to have developed the habit of taking chars I dislike and writing them sympathetically. Its not the first time I've done that to Velanna.
and yes, I have signed up on the Aussie thread. I'm really hoping its something cool and not 'oh we just wondered....'. hehe - I'm so cynical
I'm panicking badly I'm going to miss 200!  Be warned if I do - I shall still post my story.  I'm rather proud of parts of it and won't be denied the chance to air it in public :P
Awww, Miri, your Anders&Neria are so cute, they make me happy.
And yay, I have a baby model! It's always such a pain to search for babies photos, because they make them pose, and it looks unnatural.
So quickly checking in...
@Avilia: So it actually wasn't anything Anders did, huh? I liked this. Hopefully Velanna got over her scary-mage vibe since she's no longer jealous of Anders.
@Miri: Oh, I love Neria being jealous of Maggie and Anders calling her that instead of 'Margaret.' At least Anders managed to reassure her before Maggie actually got there but he'd probably need to be careful when she did arrive or else he would risk the jealousy flaring up again.
@Miri: I'm cracking up. And the idea that Neria is jealous over Maggie being crazy is just hilarious. Probably the first thing today to make me smile.
(Woke up to a call from my mom- my little sister is in the hospital. Apparently her water broke. Which is... bad. She's not due until February. And they're all more than an hour away by plane so I can't even go see her in the hospital. Cue freakout!)
@Miri
I passed out after reading that last night and didn't comment. XD I woke up giggling about it though.
@Lupus
They'll probably just put her on bedrest until the baby's lungs are in tip top shape. I had a friend whose water broke that early and after a week of bedrest she delivered her little boy. He had to stay in an incubator for another couple of days then he was just fine. Now he's two and almost 3 and a half feet tall. You'd never know he was early.
I thought I was going to be around today, because my Dad is awesome and said, and I quote "Screw all this turkey sh**. We'll just go buy presents and eat Chinese food tomorrow." But, alas, I'm getting dragged to see the boyfriend's family. His mother hates me. Flemeth in dragon mode has nothing on this woman. Joy!
Expect scary Anders pictures that reflect my mood late today. XD
See? Don't worry, Lupus. Besides, I read somewhere that early kids are often smarter :)
Cave, this picture makes me giggle. :) I'm turning on starlight express now for soundtrack :wizard:
Thanks, everyone. She's ENORMOUS for how far along she is, but my sister was a really big baby, over 10 lb, and her husband was even bigger (and he's like 6'7" now). So hopefully because of how big the baby is everything will be OK.
Just never good when my mom calls me freaking out. She's a nurse, so usually she is the last one to do that. But, it's her first grandchild, so that is probably to be expected.
@Gala-  I watched that movie last night, it was fantastic, thank you!  I can't believe how close to the book they kept.  I was surprised to see they didn't include the epilogue after all that, but I know it's a huge point of contention with a lot of people.  (My class were divided.  Half liked it, half thought it was tacked on for a "happy" ending.)
@Lupus, I'm glad you like it. They were making awesome movies back then. Maybe because they were controlled )))) lol, I was definitely in the "happy ending" camp. I thought those two were sort of reborn and deserved something good. I don't remember how, but I was lucky to avoid writing an essay about this book, that's why I still like it. Essay is a best way to ruin a book for a teenager :)
Hehe, now I'm reading "Demons", btw, and it's your fault ))) You inspired me to do it XD
@Lupus Late to the party - that whole sleep thing - but I'll add my voice to the reassurances. Waters breaking isn't the end of the world. She may have to be in hospital for a while and she'll have to be very careful of infection, but otherwise she may not even go into labour. Also, if she does, six months is viable these days! If the baby is born it might have to stay in incubation for a month or so - that's when your sister will need support and hugs. It's truly hard to have to leave your baby with other people that early.
On topic - the reasons Neria gives for being jealous of Maggie are the reasons I am too. She is so crazyawesome!
@Cave bugger! In laws can be the worst. I count myself super lucky that mine live in another state. My poor husband has to put up with my bat**** insane bunch though.
OMG the worst iphone substitution EVER just happened. I hope I got the edit done in time...
@Gala I didn't even think of the time it was made... no wonder the epilogue was left off! I can't figure any way to include the epilogue without the religious overtones from it, maybe they couldn't, either.
I liked it, too, though. and he had built up to it throughout the whole book, like where they read about Lazarus together and so on. If it came out of nowhere that would be different, but the whole time he seemed to be including hints that he was building towards a sort of religious redemption.
And I would like to think of the two of them having a happy life somewhere, too. It's really impressive how he managed to make a murderer and a prostitute such sympathetic and likable characters.
I swear, if I had a dollar every time someone blamed me when they were reading a book... I'd have enough to preorder DA2! ;)
@Miri: I know, I'm trying not to worry. Last I heard from my mom she's doing OK, but will probably be in the hospital for weeks at minimum. And she's at a very good hospital, so I know the baby will have good care. I just hate that I'm not there.
@Lupus, the characters were great. My school friend was going to name her first baby Rodi, and I was going to name my daughter Sonya (until we read "War and Peace" where the female character with that name was boring). We were big fans :)
I know how you feel about your sister *hugs* When my friend was in hospital, I was not myself because I could do nothing except spamming her with messages and bad jokes.
Ahaha, look what's just popped up on dA:
Jealousy
Wincing, Anders tried to ignore the whispers behind him. Maggie, oblivious as always, bounded on ahead of him to buy candy from a market stall. “Two boxes,” he could hear her say. “No… make it three.”
“Is that her?”
“You think? Just… buying candy? Here?”
“Sure looks like her.”
“How’d you know?”
“Seen the statue in Denerim. Better looking in person, though. Nicer legs.”
Anders stepped closer to her. “I got a box for us,” she grinned, offering him a piece. “Another for Oghren’s daughter, and one for Jowan’s daughter.” She rarely referred to either girl by their name, probably because both of them were named after her. It had to be a bit strange.
Listening to the men behind them discussing how short her robes were, Anders took the candy right from her fingers with his mouth. “You see that? How’d he end up getting someone like her?”
“Eh, probably just because he’s a mage. Stick to their own kind, you know.”
“Ignore them,” she whispered. Not as oblivious as he thought, then.
Chewing the candy, Anders nodded. “This is fantastic. What is it?” That was all it took, evidently, for the elderly Antivan woman running the stand to begin loading them up with examples of everything she made. They left with several loaves of bread filled with fruit and even more candy. “She cleaned us out!” Anders exclaimed, walking away. Somehow three boxes of candy at a few silvers each became several sovereign worth of sweets. “Give me another piece,” he added.
“The marzapane or the torrone?”
“I don’t really care. Something sweet.”
She handed him something white, with chunks of nuts in it. As he munched on it several children came over to speak with her; their parents wanted to talk not long after. He shifted from one foot to the other as what looked to be half of the population of the city of Amaranthine passed by, all eager for a chance to meet the Hero of Ferelden. As though they hadn’t before. As though this didn’t happen almost every single time they came into the city.
Eventually she managed to extract herself from the crowd, pleading the time. “We need to get moving,” she whispered. “Or we’ll never be home by dark.”
Thanks to another group who cornered them by the stables at the city gates it was well after dark when they rode into the courtyard of the Keep.
The next afternoon the latest recruitment mission returned home, a wagon of fresh faces from several of the towns along the Eastern coast of Ferelden. She wasn’t as hands on with recruits these days, with good reason. He remembered back when she was. They had gone on trips together to find people, in fact. Half of them wouldn’t be able to fight without tripping over their own feet the second she looked in their direction. And there would always be someone ready and eager to challenge her, as though somehow the entire nation had been tricked and they would prove she couldn’t actually hold her own in a fight.
So, other people did the scouting now. She would talk to the recruits before their trip into the Deep Roads, though, and conduct the Joining after. “It only seems fair,” she said. “I’m the Commander, it’s my responsibility.” But, that meant she was a veritable stranger they saw for a little while, in her fancy armor or robes, before stomping off into the basement with nothing but her reputation in their minds.
Book in hand, Anders sat in the hall near the barrier door, trying to pretend he was reading above ground, outside. With no mages in the group he had joined them, waiting in case of an injury. Granted, they thought he was there as an observer, perhaps testing the current Wardens, but warning them about the potential to get injured would only make them more nervous, and then more likely to get injured. It was the same charade they went through every time a group of recruits went through this without a healer among their numbers.
“Well she wasn’t what I expected,” one of them was saying. “I mean, did you see those legs?”
Anders clenched his fist, counted to ten. The kid could be dead in an hour, beating his head into the wall now would only be cruel.
“Legs? Nah, I was looking a bit higher up.” More crude laughter. “Hey, might get to see a bit more one of these days. I read that book about her. I guess she was going at it with the king all during the blight, Loghain at the end and half the nobles in Denerim. Plus all them templars in the mage’s tower.”
“You don’t really think that’s true, do you?”
“Who cares, it’s worth a shot.”
Curse that book, Anders thought. The author actually had the nerve to introduce himself when they were in Denerim for the fifth anniversary of the blight. Anders, who had been trying to watch the unveiling of the statue, had told him off before hitting him with lightning. Maggie still didn’t know about that, he wasn’t entirely sure she’d be pleased. She was never as fond of his ‘hit fools with lightning’ policy as he would have liked.
Someone was laughing hysterically. Looking up, Anders saw Tobias, one of the most senior Wardens in Ferelden, recruited on their very first trip after the Architect had been killed, clutching his sides and leaning against the wall.
“I am amazed you’ve kept your temper,” he managed after a moment. “There’s a burn mark on your book’s cover, and another on the floor.”
Anders raised an eyebrow. “Can you blame me?”
“Not at all,” Tobias said. “I’m just surprised that’s all you’ve done. We were taking bets, you know. I could lose five silver to Aidan unless you feel like setting someone on fire very quickly.”
Anders stood up, chuckling. “You don’t have to live with her. I do that and, well, it won’t be pretty. For me.”
“Yeah, but five silver!” Anders rolled his eyes.
The two recruits, who had been with the first group and were waiting for the others to return so everyone could leave together, glanced at the Wardens. “Are… we missing something?” one said after a moment.
“Oh yeah,” Tobias replied, laughing even harder.
“Is this one of the Warden secrets we can’t hear about yet?”
“Nope,” Tobias said. “Not even close.” He looked over at Anders. “Can I, or do you want to?”
“Go right ahead,” Anders said, waving his hand. “I’d hate to spoil your fun.”
Tobias grinned leaning against the wall, his bow casting strange shadows on the ground. “Let’s see,” the elf said, smirking. “How can I put this...? Well, if you’re ever looking for the Commander’s bedroom, it’s the second floor, east wing, fourth door.”
The two recruits exchanged a glance, grinning. “Really?” one said.
“Absolutely,” Tobias went on. “Coincidentally, if you’re ever looking for Anders’ bedroom, it’s also the second floor, east wing, fourth door.”
Another exchanged glance. “I don’t suppose you’re, um, across the hall from each other?"
“No,” Anders said flatly. After listening to their stumbling apologies for several minutes Anders sighed. “Just… stop talking. Please,” he finally said.
They fell mostly silent, whispering between each other. Tobias laughed again a moment later. “No, you didn’t hurt his feelings,” he said. “He’s doing his best not to kill you. Probably because the boss yells if we, you know, kill recruits. One of her rules. Don’t you know you should never ****** off a mage? And especially her.” He dropped his voice to a theatrical whisper. “They can kill you with their minds. ” Anders rolled his eyes as the recruits retreated as far away as they could manage in the confines of the tunnel.
Mercifully, the final group returned and Anders could escape the collective idiocy he had been subjected to all morning.
A table, formerly part of the main hall décor, was sitting in the courtyard. Well, it had been a table. Whatever happened had left it a bit too charred to be called one anymore.
“That was pretty good,” Maggie said as they got ready for bed. “Eight out of ten! Really good, actually.”
“It was,” Anders agreed, sitting under the blankets watching her. “I wonder why we get better results than anyone else.”
“Because Fereldans are tougher than everyone else,” she said matter-of-factly, grinning at him. “That and I avoid anyone who uses the words ‘honor’ or ‘glory’ like they were covered in open sores. I think they’re jinxed.” She paused for a moment. “Any reason two of the new wardens spent ten minutes asking me to pass an apology on to you?”
“There was a misunderstanding,” was all Anders said. She raised an eyebrow. “You know that book about you? The one you hate?”
“The one written by the guy you hit with lightning that said I had sex with every third man in Ferelden during the blight? Yeah, I know it.” Oh, apparently she did know about that.
“So did they,” he said flatly.
“Damn book,” she grumbled, crawling in next to him. “Sorry.”
He shrugged. “I can deal with sharing you with the whole country whenever we leave the Keep. That’s about where my patience ends, though.” Anders lifted his arm so she could scoot closer. “Don’t worry, I didn’t hit anyone with lightning.”
“Something like that,” she said, “well, maybe we can make an exception. I don’t really need anyone thinking the Warden Commander is no better than a common prostitute. It’s bad enough everyone thinks I’m a maleficar.”
“You are a maleficar.”
“I know that! I don’t want people to think I am, though. It’s bad publicity.”
“Right,” Anders laughed. “How could I forget? So, what happened to the table I saw outside?”
“Oh… nothing,” she said quickly.
Anders shifted so he could look her in the eye. “Maggie…?”
“I might have, um, used it to prove a point.”
He smirked, sitting up. “Now you have to tell me. What point would this be?”
“Maybe a ‘new recruits shouldn’t talk about wanting to see how muscular Anders is under his robes where I can hear them since I can kill with a flick of my wrist’ sort of point?”
“You set a table on fire?!” Anders looked at her and burst out laughing.
“No!” she said. “I’m not insane!” He stared, waiting for the explanation. “I hit it with lightning. Which, um, sort of set a book that was sitting on the table on fire. It kind of spread from there.” She made a face at him. “Hey, I was tempted to hit them. I think the table they were sitting near was a fair compromise.”
“Of course it was, sweetheart,” he said, still laughing.
“Shut up,” she pouted.
He pulled her back over towards him. “All right,” Anders said. “You know I love only you, right?”
“I know,” she said. “And I love only you. Well, the kind of love that involves getting to see me naked, at least. There isn’t even anyone who I have the kind of like for that involves seeing me naked anymore! And I used to have a lot of those.”
He made a face. “Yeah, well Jowan saw you naked,” Anders said.
“Maker’s breath, I was five and there was a heat wave. That doesn’t count.”
“Just saying.”
She made a noise of frustration. “Just stop talking,” Maggie demanded. “That whole seeing me naked thing? You’re completely wasting it.”
Anders had to admit, she had a point.
@Lupus I was grinning from ear to ear reading this. Hubby just came up and said:
"What are you grinning at?"
"A story."
"What's happening?"
"People are not hitting other people with lightning. It's fantastic."
"Uh. Ok. Have fun then."
