I don't know what's happening, tbh. There were no mages attacking us. Maybe he was destructo maging himself?
Both shots are from the guard shack in Amaranthine. You can only access it if you side with the smugglers over Constable Aidan/the city guard. I needed to see what was going on up there, for research purposes. It seems like we interrupted their dinner or something.

I've never sided with the smugglers. Actually no, that's a lie, I did once by accident and couldn't take the self esteem bashing I got whenever I talked to one of the city guards, so re-loaded.

Whatever you have Anders doing Surely, he doesn't seem to be enjoying it ;-)
Is that Mhairi in the background? Was this before she died or is there a mod to have her available in the game?

Isn't that the bit where he's hiding near the Withered?
Yeah, that does seem more like it. I just don't remember there being any cutscenes where Anders looked like that.

Yes - the bit just before the Withered.
If you send him away when you first meet you get a cutscene on the roof

Ahh, that explains it.
I've never sent him away in that first encounter, he just seems so eager to help!

Not that anybody cares, but my RP justification for not recruiting him at the outset (besides my PC not giving a damn about apostates in general) is that I don't want to inadvertently force him into a situation that he might find worse than the one he's trying to escape.
I care! And its sound reasoning. I like the option to tell him its his chance to escape.
It definitely makes him a more interesting character that he comes back to help. Not because he has to but because its what he thinks is right.
I wonder if I start sending the thoughts out now if we can manage Anders for DA3?

Oh now I've said it, my brain's ticking. I wonder if Anders keeps getting caught because he stops to help and thus makes himself a stationary target for the Templars?

That's my theory, and I'm sticking by it, too. He's so genuinely upset about the whole Velanna trickery situation and the idea of leaving Amaranthine to burn that I feel like it fits his character perfectly.
It would also add a great deal of frustration to his desire for freedom and the way he's treated when he's caught. Like "I get out of the tower and I help people. Real dangerous."
