I must admit I'd hadn't considered that at all. He does drink the blood with good humour and seems to accept whatever fate has in store.

Damn...now I feel guilty. I've never taken the dialogue option where you tell him to leave and never come back. Does he still appear on the roof if you do? Not that I could ever actually send him away....oh dear.

I think this calls for puppy dog eyes:

I just wish we could keep him around without poisoning him with the taint. There's something hopeless in a way he drinks that blood. I'm gonna drink darkspawn blood? Ok, it could be worse. He jokes and drinks without hesitation, without questions, though it seems to me that he realizes how it may end and he doesn't want to die, but he can only choose between one death or the other. That moment gives me creeps. I wish we could offer him something else. :(

It's the same boat you're in. Why feel worse for him than you do for yourself?

Avilia, there was an option to tell him to never come back? I don't remember what I told him. :?

Aww, that puppy face makes me want to submit myself to his will entirely. Yeah, real mages do not need blood magic for that!

Yep, Mages have the short end of the stick all around. I think he ends up enjoying being a warden though - where else will he get to reliably shoot lightning at things on a regular basis? But it is a tough choice.

My dwarf commoner told him that. He was still there waiting at the wall. The guy just can't leave people when they're in trouble.

Who's to say that we don't feel bad for ourselves? For the most part, the PC has the choice to whether or not to become a Warden taken away from them, it seems completely logical to then feel bad when they have to pull a Duncan and do it to someone else.

iirc there is - checking now.

Its like groundhog day - I've run through that door about ten times now....

No I must have imagined it - damn it - new rule - I don't say anything without checking it five times first.

I must have Nate's dialogue in my head  - bah apologies.

Well, probably because I like him and I want him to be happy? I suppose he'll be alright within the order, much safer than outside, and he's becoming an excellent warden during the game, but I just can't get rid of the feeling that I'm poisoning a rare flower.
(Or probably it's because the heat is melting my brains :D)

So do you feel that joining the Wardens was a bad thing for you, personally, too? Because if your character was fine with it (and unless they hated themselves and thought they deserved to be miserable) then why would they be any more concerned about what Anders is going through? He probably has it better than you did in DA:O because people know what they're talking about now and you aren't on the run while trying to build an army and stop a Blight.

Sarah1281, no, my chars are usually OK with being wardens and do not worry about recruiting anybody. It's just me.
I just want him to have a choice, but it's impossible, and I guess it's time to stop thinking about it.

Is it not entirely possible to be in a situation that you yourself are ok with but you can understand might not suit everyone else? Anders is the only one of the Awakening companions who has no choice about becoming a Grey Warden. It's one thing to be able to say "Hey, we have this club that isn't entirely awesome but I like it well enough...wanna join?" and another entirely to go "You have to join this club. Hope you never wanted kids or to live past your fifties!"

I'm almost positive he agrees that being a Grey Warden is better than being in the tower. But it's still a choice that, in the end, he doesn't get to make for himself and I personally find that to be unfair.

It's not like the PC really gets a choice about it either, though. You become a Warden or you die and Anders becomes a Warden or goes back to the Tower/possibly executed. Duncan may even need go use the Rite of Conscription on you.

I never really thought that he was the only one who didn't have a choice in the matter. It's interesting, since your warden could be in the same boat - especially if they're a Dalish Elf. Might have to RP that - it might give me the motivation to actually finish a Dalish Elf playthrough!

Well, now we're getting to the point why I think Anders would be a perfect love interest for a PC - they have too much in common ^_^

But that's the way it goes, most Grey Warden stories we know of are not much of a choice. :(
All of the origins had no choice, Daveth had no choice, Duncan had no choice, Alistair had no choice.

Yup and the one who did have a choice - Jory - backed out at the last minute and got killed. Ironic, no?

Also Mhairi died for being too eager. ^_^ It's dangerous to volunteer!

What about Oghren? While Velanna, Sigrun, Justice, and (depending on your actions) Nathaniel all had some degree of choices he's the one who goes to join you to run away from his wife and daughter. Then again, being Oghren in Awakening is probably punishment enough. Poor guy...he was doing so well at the end of Origins...

I'm just trying to say that you can both acknowledge that's just the way it goes for most Wardens while also recognizing that it's also a pretty big thing to take from another person's hands. Even if she came to embrace being a Warden, my HNF always resented Duncan for forcing it on her.

What about him? It's his choice to join and, from a RP perspective, it's easy to assume that he has a pretty good idea of what he's getting himself into since he was your companion for close to a year.

And, if you reject him, he could just as easily join the royal army and still keep himself away from home.

I didn't quote so I can see where it might look like I was talking about something else but...I was referring to Oghren - like Jory and Mhairi - volunteering eagerly to be a Warden but, unlike them, surviving and actually becoming one.

I love Oghren. I can't believe there's a hate Ogrhen thread. I feel so sad for him in Awakenings - it takes so much effort to do his personal quest but I always do it because he's so awesome.

I think you can find a hate thread for nearly every major character ;-)

I'm not an Oghren fan tbh and do find him a bit annoying in Awakenings.  In Origins though I did a run where I made a point of recruiting him first up - he does improve with time (well for me anyway).

He's a bit harder to get to know in Awakenings and I have a very low tolerance for the sort of humour they use for him (a personal thing and nothing more).  I also think his personal quest is bugged?  I've got his approval quite high and can never get the conversation about Felsi and the baby.

Oghren is one of my favorite characters.  I always do Orzammar first so I can get him right away.  In my mind he and Anders are totally BFF with their constant not-very-serious insults back and forth.  Especially when Anders threatens/promises to drink him under the table.
I read a lot into his character, though.  I see his drinking as the only way he can cope with his past.  That could be me making him deeper than Bioware intended, though.

I don't think you are. If you bring him into the Fade or to the Gauntlet it shows a lot of hitherto unseen angst on his part and his personal quest in Awakenings reveals even more.
