@Miri, Like Tambre needed another reason to hate Anders. XD
Posted Image

The power of one toddler scream can bring an entire child care center to its knees. I've seen it myself.

EDIT: B/c that's not much of a top picture.

@Estral, Cave, thanks!

@Miri, I'm sending you my hugs. (I'm sure if God will decide to punish me, he will send me twins.)

@Gala Twins first time around have advantages - at least all the hideousness happens at the same time and you don't necessarily have to go through it again. It's twins the SECOND time around that you need to worry about. I can't tell you how happy I was to see only one heartbeat at my son's first ultrasound :)

@Cave I absolutely ADORE your little Anders comics. He is TOO CUTE FOR WORDS. And "not my universe" Mae is priceless.

Edited to add: You know what? There's some serious Anders hate going down in the DA2 threads. Funnily enough, it gives me more hope than anything else we've heard re: Anders in DA2. People who DON'T want him there are getting unreasonably angry about the possibility that he might be.

How can anyone hate Anders? But if he will be there, I will be avenged. I had a silly talk with one guy some time ago and I said something about his Leliana, and he found my words offensive. And he said he would give Anders to templars next time. Well, if Anders will return in DA2, I'll write to him this: "ha-ha-ha!" And will laugh at all Anders haters! XD

@Tank, I've seen some Anders hatred in his DA2 thread. I wasn't paying much attention though, because there were mostly speculations and the major part of them had been discussed here already. And some were rejected by DG himself.

It's not nearly as bad as the Zevran hate going on in the DA2 threads. That surprised me.

Blood Magic

Anders had never been a fan of physical pain. There was the obvious reason that it hurt, of course, and then there was the fact that it looked bad and could maybe even scar. Besides, when he got hurt that just meant that he was doing something wrong and he hated that feeling. When he got hurt and others didn’t, it usually meant that they were doing something better than him and that was something that he couldn’t stand.

Somehow or another, his distaste about injuries had led everyone to believe that he was being called to be a healer. Since healers could take care of injuries in a heartbeat and make sure that their own injuries were treated long before there was a risk of scarring, Anders had to say that he honestly didn’t mind. Of course, the more he studied healing the more he came to dislike injuries (it was a vicious cycle, really) and so the idea of purposely injuring oneself had just struck him as completely unnatural even without all the sanctions the Chantry had passed.

In the healing area of the tower, a girl with tiny scars all over her body and who had always worn clothes that made sure to cover every last one had just been brought in. She had had a temperature and when her sleeves had been rolled at one point the scars had been discovered. Further investigation revealed further scars and the Knight-Commander and First Enchanter themselves had been summoned.

Anders hadn’t been paying much attention until those two got there and then everything started happening all at once. There was a lot of shouting and, despite the girl’s illness, the templars hauled her off. It was difficult to hear over everyone talking at once but Anders did manage to catch one thing: blood magic.

Anders face twisted with disgust at the thought and Senior Enchanter Wynne spotted his expression.

“I take it that you do not approve of blood magic then?” Wynne asked conversationally.

Anders shrugged. “I think that you would be hard-pressed to find someone who was not themselves a blood mage who did.”

“You’re probably right,” Wynne agreed. “Poor Tanna. I never even would have suspected. I mean, there was the fact that she insisted on covering up so much of herself but I had just thought that might be some self-image issues…”

“What do you think that the templars are going to do with her?” Anders asked, biting his lower lip.

Wynne suddenly looked every day her age. “If she’s lucky, she’s already dead.”

“And if she’s not lucky?” Anders pressed. He wasn’t really sure that he wanted to know but just the same he knew that the curiosity would keep gnawing at him until it drove him mad.

“If she’s not lucky then it may be some time before she’s at peace,” Wynne replied quietly. “She had to have known the risks when she became a blood mage and I know that but…Greagoir is there now and so hopefully it will go as smoothly as possible. She was fortunate to have been discovered in the tower.”

“She didn’t really look dangerous,” Anders said, frowning.

“A mage should know better than anyone that looks can be deceiving,” Wynne returned. “So why do you dislike blood magic, Anders? The Chantry teaches that it is evil, of course, but you’re not particularly reverent.”

“I’m not,” Anders admitted. “Something about the way that the Chantry also teaches that I’m a danger to the world and need to be locked up doesn’t really sit right with me, I don’t really know why.”

“Then what is it?” Wynne pressed, her lips pursed in silent disapproval of his words.

“Blood magic can be used to hurt a lot of people,” Anders replied. “I mean, we’ve all heard the stories about ancient Tevinter, right? And even if all of them aren’t true they still serve to make people more afraid of mages. If it weren’t for the fact that everyone thought that we could control their minds then they would probably be a lot less scared of us. Every blood mage that’s out there now is just further damaging our reputations and convincing the Chantry even further that keeping such close surveillance on us is necessary.”

“Mages turn to blood magic to try and seek freedom and only inevitably make things worse,” Wynne mused. “Yes, I’ve seen that happen time and time again.”

“And also-” Anders cut himself off.

“And also?” Wynne repeated encouragingly.

Anders blushed. “I’d rather not say.”

“Oh, come now. I would hardly laugh at you for opposing blood magic, no matter what your reasons might be,” Wynne assured him. “Even if you only opposed it because you passed out at the sight of blood, I would still not laugh at you.”

“I don’t pass out at the sight of blood!” Alistair exclaimed.

“I know you don’t,” Wynne agreed. “It was only an example.”

Anders exhaled. “Right then. I really hate injuries of all kind.”

Wynne nodded. “That’s not unusual in a healer.”

“The thought of injuring yourself on purpose, even to power a spell…” Anders trailed off, shaking his head. “I just can’t imagine. I mean…ew. Just ew.”

Despite her words, Wynne looked like she was fighting a smile. “So you have this great philosophical justification to explain your distaste for blood magic…and you also find it gross.”

“You said you wouldn’t laugh!”

“I’m not,” Wynne insisted, the corners of her mouth twitching up all the same.

Anders eyes narrowed and he refused to speak to her for the rest of the week.

Sarah- I like that! (and to me it's cannon that Anders is just squicked by the idea of losing his own blood. Look at how he responds to the Architect mentioning his need for Grey Warden blood!)

I like how you have him interact with Wynne in the stories she appears in, too. It really does come across as someone speaking with a former teacher. I don't know how to describe it, but I just get that "bumping into an old professor at the store" vibe... where he knows they're on the same level now but that holdover from when they weren't is still in his mind.

Gala- Zevran has nothing to do with DA2. But because he's an elf and Fenris is an elf I guess if you like Fenris you have to hate Zevran? Or something? I can't figure out why, to be honest. (but then, I think Zevran is awesome).

@Sarah, I like it! Ah, poor girl. She reminded me of that mage with Anora's hair who asks not to kill her during rebellion. I could never kill her. Always asked her to stay and fight against the Blight, I don't think she would have a chance to sneak out of the Tower. Sorry for offtop, I'm just a huge maleficarum lover :(I love the discussion with Wynne. I had the same thoughts about why Anders hates blood magic.
Funny, but this screenshot makes me wonder if Bethany is a blood mage as well.

@Sarah That was great. I really enjoyed the tension surrounding the Blood mage girl, and the interaction between Anders and Wynne was great. I agree with Lupus - I reckon a good deal of what Anders hates about blood magic is the fact that it involves blood - eeew :). Great stuff.

Alright, I've preordered DA2 in Steam. I was trying to do it yesterday, but had some glitches. I admit, the mysterious mage guy had a lot to do with it XD He and the mabari. Agh, I just can't resist these things EA do to make me part with my money!

And this page needs more Anders:

@Gala I LOVE that one- his expression is so darling. Working on Blood Magic prompt now. Should be interesting.

Oh, and by the way, if HMG is our boy - do we then have to make an Anders thread in the DA2 forums to avoid getting shut down for DA2 speculation? I'm eyeing the page count here and seeing it creep up towards 300 makes me really want to stay right here :).

I'd love to stay here, but if we won't open a thread there, someone else will do it. Especially if HMG is a LI XD. Then we can make bets will his thread beat Alistair's? And if it will, I'll just go back here because this thread is nice, sane and friendly :)

Maybe we can get a mod to just move this thread to the da2 forums. ;)

And no, you're not being delusional. I think I'd be terrified if the DA2 Anders attracted fangirls like that. We'd need two threads or something. One for us, and one for the people who smash a beer bottle into your face if you spare loghain (well, insert da2 equivalent)

Also, the first chapter of my new fic is here. Just kind of a teaser preview, since I'm not going to start working on it in earnest for a bit.

@ Sarah : Nice work :) You write Wynne + Anders really well!!

Yikes, I didn't even think about what would happen to this thread if it was invaded with crazy fangirls. (not saying I'm not crazy, just maybe not as vocal about it and certainly NO bottleface smashing!)

Ha, we can be 'hipster-Anders-fans' == totally into him BEFORE it was cool ;)

Bloodmage Anders
I had AoA Anders in my head while drawing this. I imagined him learning bloodmagic with Jowan :)

@Estral - love it. He's got a GREAT expression in his eyes - like "did I just do that?"

My prompt fill:

Under Orders

Sigrun didn't usually call them into her office. She was a sneaky one, tending to turn up at the door of their bedroom, or come into Neria's office without announcing. Anders suspected it was her dust town instincts and not something she did for kicks - she was always incredibly embarrassed if she interrupted anything... vigorous.
After a while she'd stopped picking the lock on the door. Anders had promised her they would only lock it if they were doing something she didn't want to share.

This time, he and Neria were working with the most recent warden mages in the new training arena that they'd finished setting up a few weeks after Jowan had joined them. That she wanted to see them in her office was worrying enough. That she sent a servant to fetch them was even more so.

"Do you think she's going to make us call off the wedding?" Neria said, looking worried.

Anders felt a little thread of fear in his belly at the thought. Warden policy clearly stated his and Neria's plans were... unconventional at best and against the rules at worst, but Sigrun had as good as told him she didn't care. "I doubt it," he said.

"Then what could it be?"

"Why don't we get there and find out?"

When they got to her office she found Jowan already there. Both of them were wearing uncharacteristically sombre expressions an Sigrun was holding a letter in her hand.

The thread of fear got bigger. Jowan looked up at gave them a sad smile - all of his smiles were a bit that way, not that Anders could blame him.

"What is it?" Anders asked.

Sigrun threw the letter on her desk, disgust marring her features. "Read it," she said. "Weisshaupt's decided to interfere with us again."

Anders looked at Neria, who picked up the letter and read it, her eyes widening as they slid down the page. "Can they do that?" she said finally.

Sigrun shrugged. "Any means necessary," she said shortly. "I suppose they think it's necessary."

"What is it?" Anders asked. Surprisingly, Jowan answered.

"Weisshaupt heard that you reversed my.. er.. tranquility," he said. "They're pushing the Commander to conscript as many more tranquils as we can without sending the Chantry into more conniptions than the whole Orlais thing did. And send them the methods you used, of course."

"That's not the worst bit, though," Sigrun said. "The pertinent part of the letter says that now that the Ferelden wardens have their very own blood mage the rest of you better get cracking and learn to be malificarum yourselves."

Anders' jaw dropped. "Weisshaupt is ordering us to..."

"Learn blood magic," Sigrun finished for him. "Yes."

Jowan spread his hands. "I'm so sorry.." he began.

"Shut up, Jowan," Neria said forcefully. The dark haired man clamped his lips closed so quickly that Anders almost laughed. "This isn't your fault. For all you know they were going to send us their own malificar to make us learn it eventually any way."

"But..."

"I said shut up." The tiny elf he loved with all his heart started to pace the room, her hands firmly clasped behind her back and her body thrumming with fury. "Even if Anders and I agreed to do this, there's no way some of the other recruits would. And are they aware that the only reason Anders and I are even here is because the Chantry proved we weren't blood mages?"

Sigrun shrugged. "You read the letter. It's the same as all the other letters I've gotten from the First Warden. Not even a hello, just 'do this right now'. Even when I went to Weisshaupt they didn't bother to say more than that."

"Are they going to send someone down to check up on us? And what will they do if we don't follow their instructions..."

"You could tell them I died," Jowan said suddenly. Anders looked at him. "Hell, if I hadn't survived the joining they wouldn't be able to ask me to do this..."

"Doesn't solve the problem of them sending us a malificar of their own," Anders pointed out. "Which I'm sure they would have, eventually. Perhaps they didn't think it was worth the bother when there was just me and Sevarin, but now we've got what? Fifteen mages? With the apostates Helena found while we were away and Branwen's last Tower run..."

Neria took his hand in hers, he was babbling, he knew it, but the thought of having to become something he'd been careful to avoid all his life was making his hands shake.

Jowan sat heavily in one of the many armchairs that dotted Sigrun's office, burying his head in his hands. "This always happens," he muttered.

"How many times do I have to tell you to shut up?" Neria said sharply.

He managed a weak laugh. "I think you'll be telling me to do that for the rest of my life," he said.

Sigrun was watching them all, a fierce expression on her face totally at odds with her usual cheerful demeanor.
"I'm not going to order you to do this," Sigrun said. "If Armand or Branwen or any of the other mages want to learn, will you teach them, Jowan?"

He spread his hands. "Seems stupid not to," he said.

"Fine. That'll have to do." She took the letter back from Neria and threw it on the desk. "I'll write to Weisshaupt and tell them you're all attending malificar classes like good little heathens and then they can go **** themselves."
It was the second time in as many minutes that Anders' jaw dropped. Sigrun gave him a sunny grin. "What if they..." he started.

"If they find out, I'll take the blame. 'S my fault. You guys are my wardens, not theirs. They're hardly going to line you up and ask you to cut yourselves. Not on my watch, anyway."

He blinked. "If you're.."

She fixed him with a glare. "Decision. I just made one. Now go away."

They did.

@Estral27   I love that. So much. I'm mentally writing his internal monologue

(also, I am totally in favor of the hipster Anders fan plan. But then, I'm also currently listening to the Decemberists... so ymmv)

@Miri: JOWAN FTW.  I can see Weisshaupt totally doing that, too.  Good for Sigrun for not backing down.  Given the state of things in the Fractures-verse the Chantry is probably going to be keeping a close eye on them as it is.

FWIW, in the books it's made pretty clear that Wardens can get married if they want (it was mentioned that one major high-ranked warden character had been engaged to another warden who died), and in Awakening you have two wardens married to non-wardens.  So unconventional, but not forbidden.

@Lupus Thanks! And the Jowan love has only just begun over here. I love writing him, I really wanted to put more of him in that, but he was all shamefaced and guilty and not able to talk unfortunately. There'll be another, darker one shot of him next week (I'm going to do your trick of prompting something that I want to write about).

I knew about the wardens-getting-married thing, actually. *facepalm* I forgot it for this - was thinking about the non-fraternization rule that Morrigan thinks there should be.
