I up for either drunkenly commiserating or drunkenly celebrating, whichsoever is appropriate.

I love how he is groping her boob in that pic. He would TOTALLY go the grope WAY BEFORE it was considered appropriate to do so. And I can't think of a single gel who would care ;).

I wouldn't holler at him for it. ; )

With Anders, there is no inappropriate touching. hehe

@ Sarah: That was excellent! I love reading about Anders as a child, he would have been oh-so-cute!

I *just* noticed that boob-squeeze in that picture (even though I stared at his for like 10 mins earlier) and my stomach just did flippy flops :) Swoon!

@Sarah, I just love you, you know? We were expecting something sad and heartbreaking and you give us such a cute story! Awww ^___^

@Lupus, lovely picture! I like her dress.

@Miri, actually I hoped I wouldn't have 300 watchers before our thread hit 300 pages, but the mysterious mage attracted too much attention to me. Which btw proves that despite all Anders hatred in another thread, a lot of people would be happy to meet him in DA2.

Hehehe... inappropriately-early grope. He didn't do that in my fic, but considering that Maggie went for the inappropriately-early dry-hump instead he didn't really have to.

Thank you, Gala. That's basically just the in-game clothes they stick the d!noble in when they're exiled, but I couldn't manage the plaid.

And I think most people will be very very happy to see Anders in DA2. Haters gonna hate but even they seem to think it's a foregone conclusion.

So, it's Saturday morning in this part of the world (if 3 a.m. can be called "morning"), BW haven't told anything new about NPCs :(

Oh well, at least we can have cute pictures:

And it's so cold in my flat, where did all heat go? I'm freezing. Time to sleep I guess.

I adore that Chibi. The beard , I think, is what makes it. Oh, and the fact that Ser Pounce-A-Lot is half the size of Anders. OMG ENORMOUS CAT!

My prompt fill is done:

Tranquil

For the first week, Anders avoided him. He told himself it was because Neria needed time to catch up with her friend, without a jealous lover hovering over her every interaction with him. He told himself that Jowan had never liked him, in the tower, that they’d never really exchanged more than a few words with each other for the entire time they’d been in residence. He told himself there was nothing about the man to be worried about, or afraid of…

But he knew he was lying.

The first time he’d seen one of the tranquil he’d been thirteen. There were none in Highever, where he lived with his mother and his stepfather, but his parent’s shop stocked things that could only be supplied by the Circle tranquil, and the circle would never trust an un-tranquiled mage to transport them. Felix had sent him to meet the delivery wagon at the gates of Highever.

The driver had been tranquil.

Anders’ mother had told him that the Circle tranquiled mages, but he’d never met one before, and the concept of being severed from the fade really hadn’t sunk in.

Talking to the woman on the way to his family’s shops had given him nightmares for months.

He would never have admitted it to anyone, but part of the reason he’d been so desperate to escape the Tower before his harrowing was the fear that they wouldn’t let him do it, that he’d be taken out of his dorm one night by helmed Templars to have everything about him ripped away. The first time they’d captured him, he’d fought the entire time back to the circle, shocking his capturers with his ferocity, because he was certain what his fate would be. Sometimes, at night, he woke up in a cold sweat, wondering how he’d managed to avoid it.

So seeing Jowan, knowing what he’d been through, was a bit like prodding a sore tooth. He burned to ask what it had been like, but at the same time the thought of actually asking was like sticking his hand into a hornet’s nest.

“Why won’t you talk to him?” Neria asked him one night. “You’re not jealous, are you?”

He grinned at her. “The way you’re still jealous of Maggie Amell?” he said. She mock-slapped at his arm. “Of course I’m not jealous. I just think you should have some time together without me pocking my big head in all the time.”

“Anders, he thinks you hate him.”

“I don’t hate him.”

“He thinks you do.”

“Tell him I don’t.”

“Why don’t you tell him?”

“If he thinks I hate him he won’t believe me if I tell him.”

“He won’t believe me if I do either. Anders…”

He heaved a sigh. “Fine. I’ll talk to him tomorrow.”

A small hand gripped his chin and his head was tilted towards hers. “Anders, do you hate him?”

“No!”

“Good. Talk to him then. He’s actually a very nice person for a blood mage.”

The next day he found Jowan down in the mage training room, staring at a practice dummy with a slightly pained expression on his face. It was early. He’d left Neria sleeping with Pounce curled protectively on her hip. Jowan looked up as he entered.

“She spoke to you then,” he said softly. “I knew she would.”

“She thinks I hate you. Or that I’m jealous of you. Or something.”

“So you didn’t tell her why you’ve really been avoiding me?”

“You know?”

Jowan snorted and looked back at the training dummy. “Of course I know. It’s why most of the mages here can’t bear to look at me. And it’s not because of the blood magic thing.” He lifted a finger and prodded the dummy. It swung back a little on its spring before stilling. They gave them faces - the dummies. Some of the more… mature mages had made this one look a good deal like Knight Commander Cullen. “This was me,” he said softly. “For the last six years.”

Anders swallowed. “What…”

Jowan fixed him with his blue gaze. “The worst thing about it? I quite liked it. Really. For the first time in my life, I was completely at peace. I had purpose. I was content. I never felt pain, or anger, or fear.” The dark haired man shuddered hard. “I dream about it, sometimes. When I wake up…. “ He closed his eyes for a moment. “I can tell you, it’s a damn good thing Sigrun gave me a room on my own. And that the walls of the Vigil are thick.”

“It’s why I escaped before my Harrowing,” Anders confessed. “Maker’s balls, I was stupid.” He shook his head, remembering exactly how stupid he had been. “Irving rescued me. Because I was… well… Anyone else and I would have been…. Without Neria to help me either…”

Jowan laughed. “She’s very determined when she puts her mind to something,” he said. “That’s why I asked her to help me. I knew she’d tell me I was being an idiot if she thought I was… of course, that’s also why I didn’t tell her about the Blood Magic. Funny how I was willing to listen to her on somethings and too stupid to follow her advice on things that actually mattered.”

“Neria understands why you turned to blood magic. Andraste, I would have, if I thought it would get me out of being made tranquil. You really didn’t have any other choice.”

Jowan pursed his lips. “Didn’t I?” he said. “I suppose I didn’t. At least now, with what the two of you have done, mages who are just sub-standard like me won’t be subjected to that fate.”

“Sub-standard?” Anders said. “I’ve seen you take down an ogre on your own…”

Jowan wiggled his fingers. “Blood mage, remember? There’s a reason people are afraid of it.”

“Your regular spells are just fine, Jowan.”

“You sound like Neria used to,” he said, smiling. “She never really knew… I was always better when she was there to help me.”

“That doesn’t make you a worse mage,” Anders said. “We all need people around us.”

The blue eyes clouded. “Not if you’re tranquil,” he said. The two men contemplated the training dummy for a few moments. It felt odd, to think of the man next to him as a maleficar. There was just something so… nice about him. Which was, of course, half the problem. If he’d just told Neria how jealous he was of her power, perhaps she would have talked him out of his uncertainty. Made him confident enough to allow the Templars to call him for his Harrowing.

“You know what, Jowan?” Anders said. “I suspect ninety percent of your troubles come from trying to be nice to people.”

Jowan laughed. “What about the other ten percent then?”

“Plain old stupidity, like the rest of us,” Anders said, clapping the other man on the shoulder.

Have I mentioned how I adore you lately?  <3

And I loved this.  I never really thought about a fear of being tranquil as a motivation to escape, but it does make sense.  And that other mages would be creeped out by being around Jowan after the fact, too... sad, but again it makes sense.
I just want to give him a hug after reading this.

@Miri: Oh, creepy! I still have no idea how they managed to un-Tranquil-ize Jowan but hearing from him what it's like to be Tranquil now that he's normal again and can process emotions again and realize how horrid it is was really fascinating.

@Sarah Thanks! Ever since the de-tranquilization I've been wanting to write some of Jowan's feelings about it - so the prompt was really just an excuse for me :).

@Lupus Always happy to oblige with Maggie references. In my head she's having ENORMOUS fun in Antiva by the way. She may have to turn up for Neria and Anders' wedding :)

Because it has both Anders and Jowan in it:

Yes!

And my card arrived back at Aimo's! Near as I can tell, they probably left a "sorry we missed you" note on my door, and since we're in the grip of winter I'll either find it under the melted snow come April or it blew away.

@ Miri: I really enjoyed reading that :) The thought of tranquil-Jowan makes me sad but I'm so glad he was able to un-tranquilize!! Good on Anders for trying to work through his issues too ;)

@ Cave: Feel better!!

Edited to include my prompt fill:

Tilly the Tranquil

Anders sat in the library, pretending to study herbalism for his next examination, although the backside of the female apprentice in green robes next to him was far, far more interesting. He found himself contemplating her robe's subtle rises and falls when he heard a group of boys whispering and trying desperately to stifle their laughter out in the hall.

His ears perked up. "Well, well" he muttered as he cocked his head. "Someone is certainly scheming out there" He shut his tome of herbs and smirked. "And what kind of tower-trouble-maker would I be, if I didn't lend a hand?" He stood up and swept out to the hallway.

In an alcove of the hallway Anders found 4 other boys, hunched over something in one of their hands. The tallest of the boys looked up at the sound of Ander's footsteps.

"Oi! Anders!" He whispered. "Over here!"

Anders trotted up the group and peered into the circle of shoulders. In the pudgy little hands of one of the apprentices Anders saw a very large, very slimy, very unhappy looking frog.

"Now where did you find that little guy?" Anders smiled. He liked where this was going already.

"Must have hopped through the drainage pipes in the basement. " the boy holding the frog grinned. "Wanna know what we're gonna do with it?"

Anders nodded, anxious to hear which squeamish female apprentice he would be 'rescuing' from the slimy animal. Perhaps the girl in the library….

"Gonna drop it in Tilly's pocket." The boys tongue waggled.

"Tilly?" Anders brow furrowed. "Why Tilly?"

"Just to watch! You know, see what she does!" The boy's grin grew more devilish.

"Well, that just seems…" Anders broke off  "Unfair. Not nice. And not to mention useless, it's not like she's going to…." he dropped his voice and looked around "going to react."

"We know!" The group bubbled in excitement. "Thats why we picked her! Tranquil Tilly!"

"No no no." Anders waved a hand, face growing serious. " Number one, that is a waste of perfectly good prank. Number 2, she's a tranquil, not a spectacle."

The boys around him glowered.

"Anders loves Tranquils! Anders loves Tranquils! Anders loves Tranquils!" The boys laughed.

"Stop it." A wavering voice called from across the hall. "Just stop it." A little elven girl rushed into the group. "Can't you ever just leave my sister alone?"

Anders looked at the poor girl, she had obviously watched the events unfold and was rather upset.

"Here, give me the frog boy." Anders tried to make his voice as deep and intimidating as possible as he thrust out his hand. The boy held the frog back for a moment, but saw the sparks begin in flicker on Anders' palm. He quickly relinquished his grip on the bloaty little beast.

"Fine." he spat. "You are no fun Anders."

"I disagree. " the little elf girl looked up at Anders and held him in her eyes. "He's wonderful." she kissed him sweetly on the cheek.

The boys glumly dissipated, leaving Anders standing in the hallway with the frog.

"Thank you" the little elf girl looked up at him. "I miss my sister so much and those boys…. they just are relentless."

Anders wanted to make a quip about rescuing her, or some other flirty statement but was caught by the hurt in her eyes.

"I'm sorry, you shouldn't have to deal with this." His shoulders slumped.

The girl smiled slightly, "The worst part is, I know she can't care about it anymore. Still makes me angry though." She squeezed Anders' hand.

"Do me a favor, don't ever let yourself be made tranquil. It's worse than death for those that love you." With that, the girl's eyes grew distant. She turned, smiled again and left Anders in the hall.

Anders looked down at the frog, who regarded him with a quizzical stare. He took a moment to collect his thoughts, and looked back at the frog.

"Hm" he chuckled. "Have I got the pocket for you!"

Anders starting walking back towards to the library, hopefully the same apprentice in the green robes would still be there…..

@Estral - oh, I loved that. So so accurate - the sort of things kids will get up to, and tragic, that the prank wouldn't even have touched her. And the little sister! OMG, it's too sad :(. You wonder how many other tranquil have relatives in the Tower when they're tranquiled :( :(.

Great job.

@Estral: I'm kind of surprised that they allowed Tilly and her sister to stay together in the Tower and know that they're related. Just the same, not seeing Tilly herself at all but getting the reaction of her sister was poignant. I must confess, though, that I'm not sure why it's perfectly fine to drop a frog into the pocket of someone who WOULD react and be very upset but not into the pocket of someone who honestly wouldn't care.

@Estral: So sad... that has to be torture for someone to see their former friend or relative moving around like a zombie day after day.

@Sarah: I'm thinking he was at that hair-pulling chasing on the playground age if he was going to put it in the pocket of the girl he liked. The line between flirting and bullying is pretty thin then (but he wouldn't be doing it just to be mean spirited at least.)
