@Surely, I love you! Thank you so much for happy Anders. I think I've seen him smirking, not even smiling, twice so far. First one was when Hawke had just met him and he said that he doesn't have to go to Grey Wardens parties and wear the uniform. And the second one was when we helped a boy who was a mage.

He half-grins a lot. Probably my favorite moment of his, despite it being so incredibly small, is when Hawke is agreeing to help someone and he turns and smiles his approval and he's still smiling when he looks away. It's just so sweet and understated.

I got the romance yesterday. It was very sweet.

I can't seem to get Rivalry with him. My Hawke agrees with him too much!

@Surely, I love this staff! I've just entered the Deep Roads and we've found it and I said: "Hey, it's Lamppost's twin-brother! Anders, he's yours!"
@Sia, I can't make him hate me too. It would be so OOC for a mage!Hawke to support templars, imprison mages while she's an apostate and a maleficar herself. Funny that sometimes even Carver agrees, though I'm afraid friendship with him is impossible. But don't give me spoilers, I'm still in the act 1!

I may be alone in this, but I'm a little upset with the romance! Granted, I'm only in act 2.....but I feel like we just went from being "friends" to "OMG I can't live without you". I mean, there was no development at all. I realize this is probably because of the 3 year time lapse....however, I didn't feel any kind of build up. I had only talked to him maybe 2-3 times.

With other characters too, I keep going to their houses after every couple quests expecting them to have something new to say. Nope! I feel no connection to them at all.

This is the weakness to at least both Fenris' and Ander's romances (probably Isabela and Merril's as well).  You get the wonderful "squee" moments for sure, but there is very little development.  I think it's actually more pronounced in Fenris'; it's a weakness in the timeskips I suppose.  I would have liked for "awwwww" moments to happen before a time skip, and then see the relationship actually mature (if that makes sense).

But the dialogs you do are are SO sweet.  And I think the sexytimes are very well done.  Romantic, sweet, and the fade to black does work.

I totally agreed.

Which is why I couldn't understand there are people out there actually complained about it. Hope that thread is locked now.

Btw, I read it somewhere that there is a way to romance two NPC at once, eg, Anders and Fenris? Anyone knows?

Okay, playing through the game unspoilered was the best. experience. ever. I'm done my mage, and it is awesome, and I'm off to play through again as a rogue!

I enjoyed DA2, and I went through most of it unspoiled (although it was hard to avoid the early spoilers) and also as a mage. I liked the conversations that I had with Anders and the development of his character. I think he's a great companion (even though we disagreed about Merrill), and I kept him with me through most of the game.

Just curious, but considering his "current condition," does that mean he's no longer going to die early from the taint?

Good question. Even if Justice's spirit does keep him alive, much like Wynne's case.....won't the spirit just get weaker and weaker? Fade spirits arn't meant to remain in the real world. I imagine it would be rejected at some point.

Hm, I've just seen the kiss. Now I need to collect my jaw from the floor. Awesome. <3
Now, speaking of development. I have a feeling that a lot had happened during these 3 years. Funny that both Anders and Varric were at the Deep Roads and Hawke gained 100% friendship with them right in the begining of act 2.  And the fact that Varric is trying to keep Blondie out of some troubles does mean something. I guess it's the Deep Roads, they bring people together. Besides, Hawkes now owe Anders a life debt or something. For his big spoilery help in the Deep Roads.
Also, in my case Hawke and Anders were really sweet to each other since they first met. Maybe it was love at first sight? They were just busy with other things. :innocent:

I think the time jumps do have something to do with it, absolutely.  Anders says something after smexytiemz to the effect of "I laid awake at night aching for you for three years" which kinda jellified my insides.   I do wish they'd put in more one-on-one convos to compensate for that - or even just some throwaway lines that touch on things that happened during that gap, like maybe "I appreciate the help you've given me with my clinic" or something.

Yeah, I kinda spoiled myself on that point - accidentally saw something in my strategy guide.  I'm kinda glad I did though, because the alternatives would have SUCKED.

Oh, and Gala - isn't new art style Cullen HAWT?!?!  When I first saw him my eyeballs nearly melted.  I SO wanted to play 'naughty templar and naïve apostate.'

So no one else is roleplaying their Hawke as the world's biggest klutz?

(just after Anders joins the group)

Anders: Are you limping?
Hawke: Oh, it's nothing. Just stepped in a trap?
Anders: Of templars?
Hawke: No, a big rusty snare trap. We had some time to kill before we had to help you, so we dealt with some ambushes on the Wounded Coast. Raiders have traps. It's their thing.
Anders: That's what you do to kill time?
Bethany: Since it's still early, we're going to break into a house on our way home.
Hawke: That's right! Maybe you should heal my ankle, in case there are more traps.
Anders: *wonders what he's gotten himself into* *is an awesome healer*

(A year after the Deep Roads)

Hawke: *has a pretty bad papercut*
Varric: So, Blondie. When are you going to name your clinic after Hawke? She has to be your most frequent patient.
Hawke: That's not true!
Varric: 239 times in less than two years.
Hawke: Liar.
Varric: Yes, but it's my job to keep these sorts of details straight.
Anders: Well I'm glad she came to see me. It is a pretty bad papercut. I'd hate for it to get infected.
Hawke: Yes! Infected. We need to stay on top of these things.
Anders: It would never do to lose our hero to a cut, or a splinter.
Varric: Or a hangnail, hangover, stubbed toe, twisted ankle or...what was it last week?
Anders: I think she fell in the market. All I remember is that her bottom was involved.
Varric: Either the two of you need to get on with it already or we need to get into some trouble soon. This is just getting embarrassing.

Double posting, re: Cullen.

I think someone in the art department loves Cullen, because he is probably the best looking NPC in the entire game. He's also well written AND has The Voice. Maybe BW is trying to make up for giving him that name or something.

And my favorite screen from the love scene. Actually, it's not. I just love his expression so very, very much.

@WeRtheBrox, oh yeah, Cullen is the only reason why my blood mage Hawke is trying not to kill all templars in the area. She's trying to influence him. I hope it will work.

Oh, and the love scene with Anders? Best thing ever! They managed to avoid the awkward underpants part and this is awesome. I was afraid to watch, but it was so cute and romantic.

**lol @ 'awkward underpants'** Yes, Anders' love scene was definitely sweetsexyhot.<3

But I'll say one thing - I'm going to cry big, fat, sobby tears if I wind up having to kill Cullen.:crying:  I'm only mid-Act 2 right now, but the whole templar/mage conflict thing seems to be heading that way, and he's WAY to pretty to die.

God, this is so good. And the Act 3 Anders conversation has me very, very on edge. Very on edge

He has a lot of good conversation on Merrill's second quest, but I'm kind of wishing I hadn't brought him since he's such a jerkass to her. It's like kicking a puppy!

I really wish there was an option to intervene sometimes. I felt terrible for her the whole time because seriously. She knows

This blood magic hatred kind of angers me. Anders is sleeping with my Cassy who's doing this like 20 times a day, manipulates people and keeps Evil Books under her bed and he's mean to Merrill because she cuts her hands sometimes? Of course, I haven't done any Merrill's quests yet, so I don't know, maybe she'll do something dreadful. Like another old god baby from Anders or from Carver. But Anders keeps going on about it since she joined. I blame Justice. Anders wasn't so hostile to blood magic in Awakening, but Justice was VERY hostile to demons and Anders speaks like Justice very often.

We knew that he didn't approve of it before. It was one of the first things we learned about him. The in-game mechanic of not having specs really matter to anyone else (fighting Loghain with blood magic is hilarious fun) is frustrating and I think it caused a lot of people to gloss over how scary blood magic is to non-mages and mages who, like Anders, knows what it's capable of doing and how it's used to justify the templars' fear and abuse.

I was hoping DA2 would recognize our specs more, but I was wrong. He doesn't say anything about Hawke being a templar, either, but he's more amenable to working with templars overall as long as it's towards his goals. I imagine that is a Justice thing.

I'm not entierly surprised they didn't get into the blood mage thing.  It's one specialization out of... what, nine across all three classes?  That's a lot of money for new animtions and dialogue that few people will see (I think they said most people in DAO played once, as a warrior, by their recordkeeping).

I was really surprised with how many mage-specific dialogues there were in the Anders romance, and the game in general, though. At least once you get blackmailed into helping someone because you're a mage, and Anders waxes poetic on more than one occasion about you being a mage, and both of you being apostates, like that's a really big deal to him.
I suppose that the world acknowledging you as a mage isn't as big a shock, since if you don't play a mage the non-romance dialogue can easily be changed to mention your apostate sister.

I'm curious to do the romance with a non-mage (which will be soon, as the credits are rolling on my desktop as I type this from my laptop) to see how it changes, since it seems like it would be a substantial amount of new dialogue.  And I am very pleased that my "Anders will be THE key character of DA2" theories were not complete crazytown nonsense.

We all know blood magic is bad news bears in the wrong hands. Anders is even more acutely aware of that point, being a mage himself. The fact that blood mages are undermining his goal at every turn probably isn't helping either. Although, there are times when he simply comments that it is an act of desperation too.  -shrug-
I think he's actually concerned about Merrill, because she really is dense and doesn't know what she's doing, sweet as she is. Some of their banters are nicer than the actual cut scenes.

@Lupus, Honestly, I liked the Mage/Anders romance better, but there is a wealth of new dialogue if you go in certain directions with the other classes.

I really, really liked the mage/Anders romance. Something tells me I won't like the others as much. It just felt like the writers expected people to romance him with mages, that it was 'supposed' to be that pairing. Or something. It seemed very natural and fitting, especially at the end.

I'm pretty sure they planned that out all along. The romance is sweet with any of the classes though. The ending is practically perfect, well as perfect as it could be, with mage/Anders.
