A Midwinter's Thaw. Epic fanfic on LJ that uses an exiled Alistair. It's very, very good. Those two do EXTREMELY good unresolved sexual tension as well as some first class smut. If you're a member of the community there are some extra stories they've written in the universe, including the Anders/Alistair/FemCousland threesome SurelyForth was talking about which is ... HOT.

Surely, your Alistair exile fic is as good as AMWT in my books, by the way. I look forward to both sets of updates equally - possibly more for yours because with AMWT I know exactly when they're going to happen. Whenever I get an Undertow message in my email I go all squeely!

Plus AMWT has Anders, but not ENOUGH Anders. Ever.

It's A Midwinter's Thaw. It's an Cousland/Exiled!Alistair fic (Redeemer ending for Loghain) that's hugely popular. It's very, very well-written and Alistair has a tattoo and lion hair. I've only read up to Chapter 15 and had to stop because my story is also a Cousland/Exiled!Alistair fic and I was getting too bummed out over the quality differential.

Here's one of my favorite Anders faces ever:

And was missing an Anders "Say what?" face.

Thank you, Miri That's very nice of you to say. I'm still going to poke Undertow Alistair for being unstable rather than broody or hot, even though Unstablestair is exactly what I want him to be. At least Undertow is full of Anders.

How much Anders is enough?  There's never enough!  More Anders....

(I'm alright really, just a little hyper from too much chocolate mousse)

lol I'm playing Cranium with the fam, I only answered because no one else had yet.  XD

And just so you know, I have no interest in in AMWT, but I am thoroughly enjoying Undertow!

I read a few chapters but I'm really confused by Fergus/Anora. In that story, does it make sense? It just struck me as...bizarre.

Well, I think it does make sense if she's going to marry anyone - look at how many Alistair-as-single King fics have him marrying femCousland anyway. It's the most logical choice for a partner for her if she's going to marry anyone.

From what I've read of it...not really. It struck me as a way to get Elinora installed as Teryna of Highever without killing Fergus off. I know they show up again in a later chapter, so maybe that makes it seem more natural, but I'm so ooked out at the idea I can't imagine how it would work.

I'm just totally weirded out by the three or four kids. It seems OOC for Anora.

Oh, I don't like the pairing much, especially since she's managed to have three children with him and another one on the way, but you don't see much interaction between the two of them at all. I do think it's more of a plot device as Surely says.

The kids are cute though.

I tried my best to understand your discussion about smut. I've noticed that is usually a great part in fanfics, but I have troubles with it in my fic. Well, not me, but Anders. Because though Marina likes him or maybe even falls for him, she's confused by the dalish regulations and her grey warden duty, so she turns on Bastila mode and drives poor Anders insane. I wonder how much OOC is it for him to wait till she's ready. Especially because she stepped away from that scheme "let's do it before the final battle in case we both will die" and instead she says "we will win, and then I'm all yours".

I wouldn't think its ooc for him to consider her wishes.  He's full of compassion and understanding, which is shown more than once by his comments during Awakenings.

Edit - but I'm sure that wouldn't stop him trying to change her mind though ;-)

Actually I had the impression about Anders that he's not such a lady-killer. I mean he has a lot of beautiful women around him, like PC, Velanna, Sigrun and lots of maidservants. But he behaves quite decently. Maybe he's concerned about Architect and the Mother issue too and puts his personal desires into second place?

I agree, Gala. I think he's got a very clear idea of what's important and he would always leave the flirting to after he'd saved the world. But if there was an opportunity to flirt while saving the world as well.. I don't think he'd try hard to avoid it.

He certainly seems determined to kill darkspawn.  Perhaps it wouldn't be out of character to say he's very focused on that during the time of Awakening.  That would mean he'd be happy to leave personal things until its all settled.

If his history with women was more lighthearted he might also be happy to let their relationship go slowly until he can give his full attention to it?

If he cared about the woman, I think he'd definitely be ok with waiting. He's openly flirtatious, but he's also, like Avilia said, compassionate.

In my story, he's the one who demurs from doing too much, too soon (even though he'd love to do too much, too soon). There's not even the Save the World component to it. Part of it is because my MC is perpetually injured, but some of it is because he needs to be certain that it's absolutely what she wants. Even though their relationship is complicated, I feel like he'd be resistant to doing anything with anyone if it might be hurtful or if there's hesitation.

I think it would depend on the circumstances. Did she offer the before battle sexytimes and then back down, or was that your initial plan that you didn't put into the fic?

I think, if she said "yes, let's do it!" and then changed her mind at the last moment he would get frustrated and maybe feel manipulated.

As for how he might react to waiting in general? I can't imagine him doing anything unsavory, but I can see him going with... let's say 'gentle persuasion' to convince her. In all, I don't get the impression he's a very patient person. It seems like trusted mages are allowed out of the tower (Wynne, the botanist in Awakening, healers working elsewhere), but he couldn't hold out that long and escaped. While I can see him waiting if there was an actual connection between he and the lady in question and they had been building a relationship on a more intellectual and emotional level, I think if it was just a flirtation that didn't seem to go anywhere he would probably move on to someone more receptive.

I definitely think he wouldn't be interested in forcing himself on someone or pressuring someone into doing something they would regret, but I don't see him being the type to wait forever without good reason. In your case, does he KNOW why your Warden is pushing him away? Has she explained Dalish customs to him, or talked about her worries with the Commander job? If he knows why she's refusing him it would make more sense for him to wait than if he's just thinking she's not that interested.

Well, she allows him to do a lot of things to her and doesn't deny that she would like to do more, but she can't for now. She's not a commander actually, she's the second warden in command. It's an AU, where the hero of Ferelden keeps saving the world (the girl from my Cullen comic), and they rescue Marina from Architect prison. Marina is hesitating about Anders because she's been a Grey Warden for a long time and knows that sometimes they must sacrifice themselves, but she says to Anders only about their duty and the importance of being focused on saving the world, not each other.
Anders is the narrator in that story and he says (half-jokingly as usual) about himself that she put him on a leash, promised the reward and tames him, but he doesn't really mind because she's too damn sweet to ne mad at her  And he is also getting some kind of compensation, because she trains him to be arcane warrior and that involves them into magical contacts which he enjoys a great deal. (I was a big fan of Katherine Kurtz Deryni novels when I was a kid, so I use magic in their relationship a lot =] )

P.S. A picture of Anders and Amell (to add a bit of romantics to this page):

Your story sounds intruiging - I like the idea of seeing the events from Anders' point of view.

Avilia, you have no idea how much I enjoy "being Anders"  Maybe I'll try to translate in one day if I find some help. But I think I totally killed everything dark in that setting, because my Anders is  making fun of everything, including himself,  mentally.
