Yup, she says so in one of her Alistair banters - when she tells him about the son she had. He asks if she had him before she went to the tower and she says "I was nine when I went to the Tower, so no."

Ah, I never hear any of the banters. Her story of the incident made her sound so much younger.

Most mages get caught before puberty, it seems. I always figure Anders had a "colourful" past - possibly with parents who weren't stationary, or even possibly with parents who were mages themselves and actually taught him how to hide his powers (a la Connor, but better handled). That would explain why he's supposed to be such an awesome mage considering his limited time in the tower.

By the way - I have him pegged at about four years older than the PC and Alistair... based on the fact that he's NOT in the tower when you do the mage origin. Does that sound right to everyone?

Did he undergo the Harrowing earlier than the Mage PC do you think? I'm having a difficult time believing he managed to escape before then or else why did he avoid Aneirins fate? But that would have put his escapes very close together...and then there was all that time in solitary...he might be more in his late twenties. As for why he's not in the tower at the time perhaps it is escape attempt five or six.

He can't have been too much of a troublemaker before his harrowing do you think?

It seems the Circle and Templars nip that in the bud pretty quickly by making them Tranquil (a'la Jowan)?

I wonder if something in particular happened trigger his need to escape?

He said that he escaped after his Harrowing. Or he would have been made tranquil.

Yup. They can't make you tranquil after the harrowing. I think he probably did his harrowing, then ran, then got caught and put in solitary straight after that escape attempt. Once he'd had his harrowing, he was a full mage despite his actions.

I get the impression the circle only stops you from doing the harrowing if they think you're prone to blood magic and Anders HATES blood magic, it's in his bio I think? Perhaps a bad experience earlier on?

I mean just being a troublemaker isn't enough to make you tranquil - Jowan wasn't a troublemaker, he was just weak willed - more likely to be possessed, so they were going to make him tranquil because of that.

I thought his being weak-willed was why no one would give him a firm answer about his Harrowing and with no hope of that he turned to blood magic and THAT was why they wanted to make him a Tranquil. Of course, given that Irving already knew he was a blood mage there really is no excuse for everyone being taken by surprise when he actually uses blood magic to escape.

What other templars, do you have any examples?

What dialogue?

About the speculations when he escaped: Can we be sure he was in the same Circle as the Warden?

There's a couple of extra lines at the tree in Amaranthine.

After he talks about smelling freedom iirc :

PC.  But you are a blood mage.

Anders.  Well yes,  now I am, don't think I don't see the irony.

I think he was in the same circle - he greets the PC with the fact that he remembers her/him from the circle.

Wait, did templars rape Fiona? I thought it was her master.

I think we can. He speaks about escaping the Tower. In Orlais Circle of Magi is situated in a fortress. Besides he has Fereldan accent, and in Ferelden there's only one Circle.

She was raped by her master, then sent to the circle and abused. I think there's an implied rape by Templars as well, but I don't recall it being spelled out.

Being an Elf, especially a young female Elf, is a raw deal in Dragon Age.

I suppose I have to re-read The Calling. I don't actually remember why Fiona hated to be in the Circle.
Back to Anders: I'm sure his situation was different. Just look at him - so optimistic, never in bad mood, he's enjoying his life no matter what happens. He doesn't seem like a person with a psychic trauma or something. Now compare him to Fiona - quite the opposite.
I think it's more likely he was 14 or 15 before he was taken to the Circle, he was experiencing his first love with a girl who was probably a little older. Then the templars came and ruined his world
Then after his 1st escape he's comming back to find his girl, but he discovers that she got married and has 2-3 children. And he says to himself: "Oh, crap. Now I will have to find another girl!" ;)
Then they caught him again, then he escaped again...  Until you know what's happened.

Hehe. I think he's pretty keen on being able to use his magic rather than just sit around in a phallic symbol reading books all day.

Oh no, you've just ruined the Tower for me! Now all those flaming swords on templars' armor have completly different meaning to me.

Well, I've found this page in the book, but it says only this (after Fiona killed Dorian and was taken to the Circle):
"The Circle, sadly, had been little better. At least the nightmares grew fainter in time. She thought that she had finally put them behind her, but apparently it was not so. It felt like an old wound had been ripped open inside her heart, leaving it raw and bleeding."I think the Circle was "little better" not because templars raped her, but because she was taken from one prison to another.

Yeah, I got that impression as well.

Really, in the Tower I would assume that sexual assault would be very difficult. Wynne hints that Templars do nasty things to apostates and malificar when they catch them, but in the Tower there would be enough devout Templars to make the whole thing too risky.

I agree. If templars are so wicked, than why can't my female mage seduce poor Cullen? :o
Of cource not all templars are so devout. For example that guy with desire demon or Sadatt from Dragon Age comic, but they didn't harass anybody.

So I reject the hypothesis about evil templars.

And I have a new one: Anders has claustrophobia. In the Deep Roads he's always complaining that it's "heavy and dark" there in a very anxious voice. Maybe he had the same feeling in the Tower. ;)

I think there are evil Templars. They are just not visible at the Circle Tower. Considering how Templars are trained to distrust if not hate mages and magic, I would not be surprised if Templars whose sole purpose was to hunt illegal mages tended to be sadistic in nature. Just look at how that female Templar views Anders. She's determined to see him die. Just being a mage makes him guilty of killing her fellow Templars. That is kind of twisted. I also think that the lyrium addiction probably makes a lot of these guys really unstable.

I also have to believe that Anders predilection for escape has something to do with the whole tower culture, prison atmosphere in the Circle of Ferelden. This would be especially true if his parents approved of and helped him nurture his magical talents until he went to the tower. I also can't help think that if his parents were devout to Andraste and raised him, as stated before, to control and use magic that this would explain a great deal about our "most favoritest mage". He simply wants what he had before and hopes to find it outside of the circle.

And this didn't? Posted Image

[*]Anders: You don't actually think your jokes are funny, do you?
[*]Oghren: Could have sworn that fly was buzzing again.
[*]Anders: "HAR! Let me tell you about my life in one word!" (Belches)
[*]Oghren: "Oh no! Don't take me back to the tower! I'm far, far too delicate!"
[*]Anders: "I'm not only a dwarf, I'm a moron! Listen to me fart!"
[*]Oghren: "Oh no, big templar man! What are you going to do with that sword?"
[*]Anders: Eww.
[*]Oghren: Don't play with fire unless you want to get burned, son.

I never thought otherwise. He's very flirtatious with the female PC and he just doesn't strike me as the type to fake it for the sake of appearances. If he was into men, he'd probably admit it. And he does check out Namaya for a bit longer than necessary when she walks away:

I always assumed his version of 'sweet talking' involved, erm, well you know.
Hence his watching her walk off like that.
