Yes I noticed that look. My PC was insanely jealous the first time he did it. Then remembered she was married to Alistair... Awwwkwwwarrrd!

Now I have an Orlesian PC. I can be as jealous as I like ;).

He'll even ask if you're jealous! Oh, the indignity of him not being romanceable.

YUP, definite top of the page pics needed. I'm gathering them as I speak - now if only my damned online profile would update...

Barbarian Anders looks a lot like Alistair though, although Alistair never has that delicious twist of the lips as far as I can tell.

I've taken a lot of pictures of Barbarian Alistair and he's never looked as good as Barbarian Anders does in that cutscene. Rawr.

Ah well I admit, the theory of Anders being abused as child was probably stupid,

I still think Fiona got abused in the tower though.

Anyways, we surely can agree that Anders is awesome, and he should have been a possible romance option in Awakenings!

I like to think we had a torrid, discrete romance any way. After all we've got a whole keep to cavort in - it's not like we were camping in the wilderness in tents with no soundproofing ;).

They better have another expansion, and Anders better be in it, before DA2.

Or else.

Maybe his romance is like Sten's. Posted Image

The only character that I have imported so far that might "partake" of the awesomeness that is Anders is my mage (just popped her into Awakenings last night). We all know that morals are much looser at the tower than in the rest of Ferelden. So, a "friendly" friend may not be such a bad thing.

Friends with benefits. The best kind of relationship out there.

Lol...never been there myself. It seems to work for some of my friends though.

I would totally dig Anders as one of those "beneficial friends". A sort of free-love thing, without having to go through the unwashed-hippie-soaked-in-patchouli phase.

Oh no. This isn't just a free love-hippie-patchouli thing. It's also a middle income-urban yuppy-small businessman type of thing. My husband had one of these before we started dating. I guess these benefits are cross cultural. My guess is that it's a Ferelden-Circle Tower- we are constantly watched and need companionship, but aren't allowed to marry type of thing as well.

They're allowed to marry but mage-mage unions are 'discouraged' and it's hard to find a man or woman who isn't a mage willing to marry one of them. If they do get married, do you think they are allowed to leave the Tower or can their spouse only visit them? And how do you think mage-mage unions are 'discouraged' anyway?

I doubt they'd be allowed to leave the tower. Although I like to think that if you get up enough credit they'll let you out occasionally. And I don't think a mage/mage union would ever be sanctioned by the Chantry, so yes, they're allowed to fraternise but not necessarily marry.

[*]Alistair: So tell me, you have any children? Grandchildren? I don't know, great grandchildren?
[*]Wynne: What would make you think I have any children at all? You have to know I've spent most of my life in the Circle of Magi.
[*]Alistair: You just seem like the grandmotherly type to me, I don't know.
[*]Wynne: I suppose I'll take that as a comment on my demeanor and not my age.
[*]Alistair: Mages aren't forbidden to marry or anything, are they? It's not such an outlandish question.
[*]Wynne: Isn't it? What sort of man would marry a mage, do you think?
[*]Alistair: How about another mage? There are just as many men as there are women within the Circle, as I recall.
[*]Wynne: That sort of union is... not encouraged. Although that does not stop us from seeking out each other's... company from time to time.
[*]Alistair: I... all right, suddenly you don't seem quite so grandmotherly to me anymore.
[*]Wynne: Good. I would hope not.

To me this means that they are allowed to do it but the Templars or other Chantry officials have ways to make it not a desirable outcome.

Yup. I get that now. I wonder if there are any married mage couples wandering around then?

Maybe that's where Anders comes from. (I believe someone else posted this theory as well.) If his parents were mages outside the tower, it would have been easier to keep Anders out of the tower much longer than most.

That's been my theory, especially when I forgot that Wilhelm died over 30 years befor DAO takes place and thought Anders could be his son (since Anders looks a bit like Matthais and they sound the same).

Now that would be interesting. I have to say they sound the same because the voice actor is the same for both Anders and Mathias. What about the time line though? If Wilhelm died over 30 years ago, wouldn't Anders have to be at least 40?

We know from Willhelm's example and the motivations of the Evil Mage in the Stolen Throne (can't remember his name right now) that once a Mage scores a post outside the tower, he's pretty much free so long as he can find a patron with some pull with the Chantry. Willhelm managed to marry and raise a son without having the boy taken from him, presumably because he had Maric's patronage.

So, I'd say it's possible Anders spent a good chunk of his early years outside the tower, and a Mage parent is also possible. We don't know, but it's not a stretch.

When they say that all children born of mages belong to the Tower do they just mean all children of Circle mages? They certainly didn't take Wilhelm's child although that would have been another way to discourage anyone from wanting to  marry a mage. And if two mages had a child then even outside of the Tower I can't see them being allowed to keep it. Perhaps that's what happened: Anders' mage parents hid his existence for fourteen years before the Templars found out.

Yeah, I abandoned said theory because I just don't think Anders is that old.

SurelyForth... It may still be a valid theory, just not with Wilhelm. Could be that a noble of some sort fell in love with a mage and "kept" her as his mistress. They had a son. Then, when his mother died, the noble sent the son to the tower. That is very plausible especially if the mage were sponsored by this noble.

Patriciachr I like that theory. My Anders backstory has his parents as traveling around Ferelden, though, his mother hiding him because she's a mage and knows how to teach him. I kind of think he's from common stock (if he's not another bastard of Maric's!) though - just from his manner. Although he's charming and... all the rest of it *briefly fans self* he gives the impression of being... wealthy salt of the earth. Merchant's son or some such.
