Well, I just installed it and now Dragon Age won't start...so I guess not

I have the same question. I have 1.0 version installed and i dont want to install the patch if it will make my Addons unauthorized.

It is if Windows Update is functioning properly on a legitimate copy of Windows. Otherwise installing the latest Visual C++ 2005 runtime libraries will work in a pinch.

I tried that and it still didnt work. I have a legitimate copy of windows but out of curisity what does that have to do with anything?

Yep Dateranoth that'd be a good start to help the OP diagnose his issue.
OP: Bootleg copies of Windows are usually unable to run Windows Update since validation software is sporadically sent through the same chain. Without Windows Update it is unlikely a user would have their system up to date, though certainly not impossible.
