This is more of a check list and anti-frustration guide. I tried limit the spoilers.

First of all, Paragon responses are generally up on the circle. Renegade responses are generally down. Save before all conversations if possible.
Sometimes you can get more ren/para points for extra investigations.

Don't waste cash on Hack Module or Bypass Module. Just save before you hack or bypass. Reload if you fail. Save after you succeed.

On first playthrough, you won't be able to buy all upgrades. Also, you will only make level 26.
<addendum>This is without a character import from ME1.

After you've completed the game with any character, you get 25% xp bonus, 200k credits and 50k of all elements, even with new characters.
This allows all upgrades and level 30 by end game.
All pricing includes discounts possible without import from ME1 as I've never played it. I just got ME1, but it doesn't want to work on my PC.

What you need without buying vanity items:

    * 215,000 palladium
    * 225,000 platinum
    * 220,000 iridium - minus 45k irridium for making heavy weapons on import character from ME2
    * 35,000 element zero
    * 1,250,000 credits

I like to write these numbers down and subtract as I use them. It's one way to keep from mining too much.

Engineers get 25% off elements used in research.

On mining planets. To save time and probes, only mine rich planets, only send probes to 6 bars or higher resources.

Only buy Minos Wastelands and Pylos Nebula from Baria Frontiers. The Hades Nexus cluster is unlocked with the Firewalker DLC. The Shrike Abyssal cluster is unlocked when you complete assignment N7: Blood Pack Communications Relay. You don't get any extra systems or assignments buying them from Baria, so it's money spent for no reason.

At the time I posted this, I hadn't played ME1. I have now and found that it's a much better game than ME2. Now that you've posted your add-ons, I feel I don't need to bother editing my post. Thanks again.

I think it's possible to hit level 30 on a first playthrough. Ignore everything but loyalty missions until you complete Collector Station, which gives you the achievement and the 25% XP bonus. Then go back and do all the N7 missions. On my first playthrough I did Firewalker and about 2/3 of the N7 missions after Collector Station and came up about halfway through level 29. (I did do Zaeed and Kasumi's loyalty missions after completion though which most people probably wouldn't.)



If you're counting the end of the playthrough as right after the suicide mission, then you're right, the best you can do is 26.

BTW, how do you get Conrad Verner killed in ME1? I have only sent him away mad or seeing that he should go home and take care of things not on the battlefield.

If you talk to him all three times, I think he'll show up in ME2. If you dismiss him on the second conversation, I think you'll get a news report in the elevator about him dying. However, I'm not sure if it actually flags him as being dead for ME2 because I've had all three conversations with him, gave him the paragon reason to go home, and then still heard the news report about him dying. And he still showed up in ME2 in spite of that.

Does the amount of credits required take into account all the discounts you can get or is it without any discounts?

Also, it would appear your upgrade costs increase if you get Mordin killed on the suicide mission, but as that's after the meat of the game, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Also, probably worth pointing out that you don't get a discount option with Fortack at first, that it's dependent on doing Grunt's loyalty mission. And you don't get a discount option with Harrot, it's dependent on talking to Kenn first.

ETA: It's minimal, but if you get the discounted FBA couplings and then choose a paragon/renegade option during the poker game, your net gain is whopping 84 credits. And one of the medigel upgrades is dependent on drinking some brandy with Dr. Chakwas. And you can win more credits with the varren pit fights, up to 500 when betting with Urz.

You can still get the discount from Rodam Expeditions if the Council died, he just won't be very happy about giving it to you.
