Seems like business as usual on the interwebs to me.

Forums now-a-days (not just this one) make me yearn for the days before the internet became big. When you bought your game and.. well, you had your game. No online forum to whine in (generalization there folks, not everyone on forums whines I know), no 'cheat' sites to go to, etc. Maybe you had a BBS you could dial into to chat with some friends and share tips.. but it was so much more... well, Fun, being a gamer back then.

I never used to bother with forums, I just enjoyed the games I purchased - if a bug came up I would (pre big internet) figure a way around it [or, post big internet search the web for solutions]. I find that the inane drivel that sometimes gets spouted on forums not only tends to draw me to read what crazy people have come up with today, but I find myself playing and enjoying games less because of this. I guess its part of the human psyche to overanalyze things.. and then those things start to lose some of the polish.

Think I am going to make a new years resolution to stay the heck away from all game related forums and just play. I have become jaded over the years and skeptical that there is any way for a forum to continue on a mature path no matter what :/. Maybe I will start to enjoy gaming more again.

I was really dissappointed that DA turned out to not have a lot of nudity or a marilyn manson soundtrack. The marketing is SO WEIRD for this game. It's like a big joke on popular trends.

Social networking? Emorage rock music? Sexy sexy with animals??!

koodos bioware! you made an old fart laugh (wut)

I anticipated the arrival of the complainers. Happens every time when a new game is released. And also this social site is less strict about the rules.

All surveys agree that the average age of gamers is 35. For certain games like civilization the average is 40. So the degradation in the quality of the discussions in forums doesn't necessarily have to do with age. It may well have something to do with other trends related to the behaviour of the people on the internet.

If you ask me, the marketing is genius.  Anybody who was waiting for the spiritual successor to BG already knew what they were getting into. The trailers just brought in all those Halo fans looking for an "edgy" game.

I don't care - I hope it sells a ton of copies so BW keeps making more BG inspired single player CRPGs

I don't post in the wow official forums, I'm not that much of a masochist. But i post in a fansite. These forums are bad too, I suspect many wow players are playing this game.

I do get tired of the l2play comments. Although in some cases the l2p comments are justified, as the op is just a whiny post about how they feel a game should be, and they are most likely trolling.

So when you make a post being an annoying ahole and insult bioware and everything else, expect to be treated harshly. But if you calmly state any problems that you are having with the game, I'm sure there will be people who will help out.

I think I already see a bright spot! There's a very useful "Some Combat Tips..." thread, which seems to have people actually contributing tips for combat in a rational and helpful manner! Maybe a week in and the worst has already passed us?

You always got me! *hug* <3

Seriously, I think this forum was way better before the game was released. I think some of the problem lies that if you want to play the game, you'll need an account(correct me if I'm wrong, a I'm waiting for my own copy :D ). Then all the people who aren't really here to help or chat, can start trolling, since they don't need to create an account.

And in my experience, I've never been to any forum worse than this ATM. Hopefully it'll calm down. And the best forum experience I've had, was in the old NWN forum.

And I'm proud to say that I've followed Bioware all from NWN and up to now(KOTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect). Too bad my family didn't get an computer earlier, then BG would probably be on that list too(considering to by it, though)

And I hope we'll see a better forum experience after the release hysteria has calmed down ;)

Hi

Wow 42!
I wish I was 42 again. I'm 71.

I too remember when forums were like a family.
The original Tomb Raider forums were great.
Everyone told jokes posted pictures of their dogs, and were cordial to each other.

I used to write and post Tomb Raider crossword puzzles which the other posters would do and discuss.

One of the members from Texas started a long distance relationship with a young woman in Sweden and they ended up getting married.

I had friends in Australia and Britain.

It just isn't the same any more. When ever you post someone jumps on what ever you said with some kind of negative comment. And no one has a sense of humor!

I am playing Aion, right now and it isn't anything like the old days.

Mike

Hay good to see you still going at 71 hope im still enjoying my RPG's at that age m8 :)

When Tomb Raider was released there weren't as many people hooked up to the internet. I'm betting internet usage has quadrupled since 96. It takes awhile for forums to sort themselves out. Some just never do and remain kind of weird places to travel.. Like IGN, Xbox, IMDB... those forums seem to be full of people who just want to argue about things. So basically all you can do is wait and see what direction a forum goes..

I'm sure it will die down , Bioware have never been known to be afrade of the ban hammer and there mods are seen regularly, though no offence to the team but I do feel that the moderation used to be more stricked back in the old Neverwinter nights days.

While I agree with you OP the biowareforums are much much much better than most of the gameing ones around , It will improve when all the "halo kids" have gotten bored and left.

Alot of public forums get this way becuse setting up an account is easy and free , An example is the Metallica forums , the public ones are utterly disgusting and similor to what you would find from the world of warcraft ones. But on the other side of the clone , the metclub only forum were the forums are included in the membership are a million times more friendly, less people act like idiots when being banned costs them £40.

I'm not sure how the forums work here but in the old bioware forums you cant post other than general chat without your game being registered and being banned ment you'd need to buy a new game for the cd key.

Thats exactley how ive been feeling m8,i think having people trash you and put you down on the forums makes you not enjoy the game as much, its like ive been looking forward to mods for this game ,but you start to think should i ask this should i say this, then you think na i wont bother because im only gonna get aloud of idiots telling me im noob,or look it up and EVERYONE knows that ,except me of course.

I think it's because games are a bigger deal these days than they have been in the past. There is much more mainstream acceptance of games, so a wider variety of people will be playing. This influx of newer gamers who haven't experienced as much in terms of classic games or whatever expect different things from games today. Plus people are ****s, ignore em.

As the author of aforementioned thread ... thanks! ;)

The topic of this thread is exactly why I started mine. I'm also 43 years old and I feel that the best way to change something is to do something about it yourself. I felt like there was a lot of negativity here and the average response was "l2p" ("Learn Two Play" for us non-l33t folks).

Used to HATE that response when I was on the WoW PvP forums. Because how in the world is someone supposed to learn when all their questions are answered with "Ur 2 dum 2 play wif us!"

I was hoping that my thread on combat tips would inspire people to share what they know in hopes of making the game more fun for the other players.

44 here.

And yes, the forums are a mess.

But we can all help get that mess cleaned up!

Down at the bottom of the page, you will see a list of Mods now. Yep, go look down there, I'll wait.

*crickets*

Ok, you can all come back up here now *grins*

So, when you are in a thread, and you see it going to the Hells and back, drop one or more of the Mods down below a PM with a link to the thread and a short, NEUTRAL description of what is going on.

If we help the Mods, then the forums will get cleaned up faster, and we can get back to more productive discussions on the game, life, the universe, whatever.

I personally want to see some threads on how combat really works, see and test some of the things I am seeing, and see if we can piece together the combat system and how it really works, mechanically.

I would like to see some threads on builds, for instance. Generally, productive stuff relating to the game.

And yeah, we can be a bit nicer to one another.

Well, except for you over there!

Hey you! Get off my lawn, you young whippersnapper!

sooo.......

hypothetically...when you reach 42...your general persona changes ?.

Nah, you just lose some of the venom of youth.  Having a family to support, a deadline to meet, and bills to pay saps too much energy to even want to rant on a forum, at least in my opinion.  Took me years to learn, but a positive attitude is a healthy attitude.
