Webshaman. I would love to have one of those threads. I think we might have a tactics thread somewhere around here though, I can't find it with the searchbar (doesn't seem to function properly).

They should arrange their forums, make more categories.

One where all the negative threads should go :)

The reason im such a dick to most people is that 90 percent of the posters are expressing one of two things.

1) Disbelief at how hard the game is

or

2) Anger at why this isn't BG3 and how Bioware let down all of creation.

Generally I get tired of reading this tripe over and over so I just bash them hoping they wont post stupid crap again.

Nah, you just lose some of the venom of youth.  Having a family to support, a deadline to meet, and bills to pay saps too much energy to even want to rant on a forum, at least in my opinion.  Took me years to learn, but a positive attitude is a healthy attitude.

I think rex is one of the best rpg characters ive ever come across, just his voice made me keep talking to him lol.

Any community where joining is as easy as signing up is going to have brutal spam and useless nonsense all over it. Mass market brings in the masses...

But if it annoys you so much why keep reading them the first couple of words usually sets the tone if its not what i like MOST not all of the time i try to just skip it and move on without comment, nobodys perfect we have all bitten back when someone has crossed the line, but mostley i just let it go,because there not gonna change to my logic and will probably enjoy a slagging much much more than i.

trust me this isnt as bad as WoW's forums. EQ2 and LOTR has great forums.

I spend time on both. I actually find these forums more cut throat. Some people here can actually spell unlike the WoW forums for starters. And its over a single player game that they do it over which honestly puts these forums over WoW's for me. WoW i can understand people not wanting nerfs etc that someone might call for because they are in that very game too. Here? You can't even lay out your own opinion on a single player campaign without someone taking a shot at you. Its pretty sad. The old Bioware forums were nothing like this.

Yeah.  It's one of the reasons it took me so long to get the achievements for using all characters.  I tried to stop using him, but he was just so much fun.  I did his side quest on every play through so I could keep him.

In answer to the original question, I still say Penny Arcade said it best: www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/3/19/ (warning for language).  It's not necessarily an age thing.

For what it's worth, here's my experience with DA:O.   I'll be 30 next month.  The first Bioware game I played was Neverwinter Nights (yes, I missed BG2).  I've since played several others, including Mass Effect which was the game that made me think a litle FPS is okay.

I knew DA:O was in part a tactical combat game but I didn't really appreciate what it meant.  I had a frustrating few days where I had to fight the same battles 10-20 times then go the next room and repeat the process.  After I got too frustrated I'd put certain battles on easy.  The problem with easy on the Xbox 360 is that you go from too challenging on normal to no challenge at all on easy.  I always feel like easy is sort of cheating so I don't like to do it but I also don't like being frustrated all the time.

So after a few days of that a friend of mine came over with her husband for a weekly get together. I was playing DA:O at the time  (she had just started playing the PC version).  Both of them immediately realized that part of the problem was that I had no concept of how to use tactics.  So they gave me a brief tutorial (She has played BG2 and has a gift for tactics which I sadly lack).   That improved things immensely.

Unfortunately, there are some other things which I think are game flaws.  There's no overhead view on the 360, for example, which makes planning attacks a challenge because you never see the whole field at once.

But here's the thing, I never buy Bioware games for the combat.  I buy them because sometimes they tell really great stories and have the best NPCs bar none.  There have been some exceptions of course (NWN 2 main campaign) but when they're good, they're really good.  So even if the combat could really use some tuning, it's almost incidental to me.   I'm there for the story and the fully developed NPCs and I think they succeeded at both of those things with this game.  That's why I love Bioware.    They've also done a fantastic job integrating the origin story throughout the campain, at least for the human noble.  (I haven't tried other origins yet).

Anyway.  I say all of this because I do think there are some actual UI flaws in the console versions and that makes some people really unhappy.  If I were more of a tactician I'm sure I'd hate not being able to see the whole field but since I'm not, it's mostly a minor annoyance at this point.

I think there are some people who don't know how to use tactics and maybe don't even realize that's the problem.  And I can definitely see a lot of attitude in replies to those posts.  Use tactics isn't a particularly helpful answer if you don't really understand how tactics are meant to be used.

It is different from other Bioware games as far as the combat system goes, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.  You want companies to push themselves and their base of players or else you risk stagnation.  As long as they make games with compelling story lines and fully realized NPCs I'll keep buying their games.

As for improving civility, I think other posters have it right.  For a while there are going to be people who subscribe to the Penny Arcade theory of Internet behavior.  But then the next game will be released (ME 2?  Bioshock 2?) and they'll move on.

I'm sorry this got so long and veered off topic.  I just wanted to say there are also players who are new to the forums who try to be civil and helpful when possible.  I'd like to think I'm one of them.

I, too, miss the pre-release social site; it was smaller, closer-knit. And a lot of the people were carry-overs from the old Bioware forums. Actually enjoyed reading most of the posts there. Sure, there were some trollish posts, but even those were usually taken in good humor, or were at least somewhat amusing.

Now it is somewhat disheartening coming here.

But, as some have said, it will all probably even out eventually. If only people would just stop responding to the ridiculous posts, they would go away sooner.

That said, I'm still glad the game is released -- after lurking here, at least I can go and let out my aggressions on some Darkspawn scum.

After a lot of years using internet i came to a conclusion, internet is more real than real life.

Usually it is said that internet is used to change your personality or to use other personalities... but it is the opposite... the true nature is more true in internet.

Where are the cyber retards in RL? All around you but not giving their true face (most of them). They are under social pressure so they act not free (there isn,t such thing in internet).

I would tottally disagree in RL a 10 stone 5"5 man probably wouldnt go aroung shouting his mouth of and acting tuff,on the net he acts out his fantasy of being the big man on campus, because nobody knows he isnt.

I think I already see a bright spot! There's a very useful "Some Combat Tips..." thread, which seems to have people actually contributing tips for combat in a rational and helpful manner! Maybe a week in and the worst has already passed us?

How did you find it? The search isnt working in my browser (LOL) so all I get is the most recent angry mob roll posts.

I respond to the rant threads to usually tell the poster how much I hate the, whether I do or not. Some people actually effect their points very well, others are not far removed from monkeys. Either way I despise useless threads. I guess ive been coddled by the Relic forums where useless stuff gets deleted instantly.

They need to prevent anyone without a registered game from posting. That would clear up a lot of the troll posts and spam.

I am 54, and have played games since ZX81, and been into RPG before putes became popular, playing rpg board games with my son. I post now and again if something sparks me to respond, if I find it amusing or interesting, otherwise I let it fly over my head for the most part for many of the reasons already stated above.

I got my game last Friday, and feel like I have been watching a film for days, one that I have had a part in. I have been entertained no end with this game so far, often just walking around enjoying the ambience. I love the tactical part of the game, the dialogue, the fact the game has the ability to move me.

The trolls, the angry, the disapointed quick fix kids and some 'adults', really dont realise what they are missing. RPG its in the name of the genre' it says immerse and enjoy, challenge and perseverence, being a hero/heroine in your own little world for a time. Streching the imagination and breaking free of reality for a time.

We have so much control over how easy or how hard, how we develop our char and yet still get surprises. If there is a few glitches, hell, so what? Heros dont get carried everywhere and have perfect lives, and theprice of the game is still cheaper than ONE night out to ****** it down the drain in the morning, as oposed to hours, days and even weeks of entertainment.

Hell, when I wer a lad..... :)

56 here and I've noticed a lot of what the OP said, too.

There's probably lots of reasons for Internet conduct so I won't get into that, but in this forum I'm noticing a lot of intolerance. The hip powergamer lingo is particularly annoying, but I guess kids these days no longer use rulers to determine their manliness so other means have to be employed.

Too many of the threads have people on one side calling out trolls and haters while acting as if a criticism of the game is something personal that must be reacted to defensively. I don't understand the lack of tolerance and consideration, but I'm not the desired demographic.

Upthread someone pointed out they thought the average age of a gamer was 35. That may be true, but I'm guessing the average age of posters here is substantially less that that!

Looking back, I agree the pre release forums were much better. There were only one or two guys that pissed you off. We had nonsensical, fun thread like Dragon Age war game and discussions on various other topics. It was more laid back.

Yeah you are right,  it's actually both the sides employing very cheap tactics, and I admit I may have said some unkind words here and there, but I think I have learned to stop doing it.

I really enjoyed the pre-release forums and I am sure the current forums will cool off once something else new is released. I have mostly been hiding in groups lately (evil impaired is fun). I am sure the camraderie of the old forums will return after a few months. I am stuck at work right now or I would be killing darkspawn, not posting. Anyway, hi to everyone. Keep your spirits up, the discontent will leave (just like they did on the old NWN forums) and those of us who truly love the game will be able to discuss tactics to our hearts content.

Is there no guilds you can make and join like we had in the old nwn forums?
