Nah, it's easy.

People see the commercials and buy the game without doing any research.

Then they get cheesed off because whatever revolutionary game is being advertised (which they won't spend the time to learn the systems adequately) is different from games X,Y,Z (which they wish developers would just stop cloning already).

Then they feel the need to post about it here, because attention is equivalent to love and they want to feel validated in their anger.

I think you all are missing the point.  The OP isn't just speaking about this forum.  He's making a general statement of the state of forumcraft in today's market.  It really does just boil down to generational differences.  I'm 37 and have noticed the total lack of respect people have for each other online, both in game (for mmo's) and certainly in the forums.  The 'no-consequence' nature of the media involved and the general degredation of virtue, honor and integrity in western culture is to blame.  Just watch a night of prime time tv to see why things are the way they are imo.

And to blame this on World of Warcraft or anything else than the lack of PERSONAL responsibility for one's behavior is kind of lame tbh.  People are responsible for their behavior and their choices in life, period.  I may have had a ton of reasons to end up different than the way I did (divorced parents, abused as a child or any of the many other reasons people use to absolve themselves of responsibility).  But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter.  You're either a dick or you're not.  Based on your own choices on how to act.  Don't be a dick.

The number of unpleasant people on the forums is starting to put me off even playing the game itself.

Me, too. It's sad, too, because I get all excited about the game and then come here and just see people slamming each other, outdoing each other with whatever, and very little game play. I expect that on /b/, but not on a game board. It's dragging down my fun with the game when I come here and see how everyone's treating it.

Don't let some douch bags stop you from playing a great RPG game. You do not have to be on the forums to play the game. If i were you i would stop reading the forums and just play the game. Im at work so i have nothing better to do :) + whos likes to work at work. Every game forum is filled with trolls and douch bags. These included. The biggist douch bag fest is WoW.

Problem for forums is that posters cant see and interact. We become online names and some tend to hit on anything not standing in front of them. It is important to remember that behind all posts there are a human being. Some forget and start a war at any chance. Why care.. its internet and they are just game chars.....

But we are all humans , beside the aliens that post here ..............

and since the age issue is up here .  im 48.

Meh didn't want to end on a sour note.  Absolutely LOVE this game.  Most definitely my favorite game i've played.  It's kept me up till at least 4am since I got it however so it's starting to take its toll :).

TL;DR

Sorry, but I had to!

Honestly, sometimes it's good to not take things too seriously(like the internet)
when there are actual issues(like the ecenomy) to worry about.

The more you talk about the good old days, the more you "feed the trolls",
and unless you still have some acid, you'll lose.

Big things come from small starts,if nobody ever challanged anything nothing would change, this post was made for like minded people to talk and share there views,im not trying fallout with you,but if everyone just said well thats the way it is, chaos would rain. From the amount of posts in here it would seem that there are plenty of others who are fedup with being trappled on,its nice to see so many peoples views and upto now not one nasty, petty, ranter or troll, yes i know they are out there but hopefully more people will read in here and see there is another way and its called tolerence and friendley and helpfull.:)

I like this thread. This is probably the 2nd forum to which I have ever posted anything. I am 33 (am I the youngest poster on this thread?). It's nice to hear from people who want to play the game just to enjoy the experience, maybe even make some friends. I generally only play either single player games or offline co-op games with my wife (Resident Evil 5 forever!), mainly because I don't want to get involved in the "culture" of the young kids in the online games. I did have a decent experience with FFXI, which I tried for a couple months, but decided I did not want to dedicate a whole year or more of real life time to finish that game's main quests. What I mean by decent was that the people there to me seemed very helpful and were there to have fun. (I don't think the majority of subscribers to FFXI come from the US). I had a sour experience with a little game called "worms" that to me seems it should be a kids game. I tried it online once and the other 3 people with whom I played could not say more than 5 words without the requisit "f**k" thrown in. I could not understand that. I only played that once. Anyway I love DA:O and I shall finish writing so I can go play some more (I am at home "sick" today) :)

Ok... you misunderstood me.
I merely meant pick your battles(a gaming forum is a dime a dozen), ones that actually
have an effect on the world around you. There is no way to "save the interwebz" apart
from changing basic human behaviour. The reason there are trolls goes far beyond
the internet. It is a societal issue.

Trying to save a forum, or complaining about the cancer that is killing Bioware SocialNetwork(Beta)
doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment of ones time and energy.  Especially in the world we live
in today.

Like I said before, either you understand the psychology of the average net troll and understand it's
weaknesses(KILL IT WITH FIRE) or you just end up making it stronger. Like the Ron Paul movement.

Anyways, I don't bother getting offended online anymore. Life is too short.

I can.  Bad parenting.  Younger folks aren't learning social graces well as they spend more of their time in virtual spaces that aren't moderated by parents or other elders who's opinions they might value.

As a result there is less smacking, less mouth washing, and less "No johnny it's not proper to tell Jenny you are going to rape her and skull **** her."

I'm only 24... and I say only considering there are people here with 2x to 3x my age :P and I'm nice I think.  I don't know if its age or what not that makes people behave different over the internet, maybe I've just mutated away from the "normal" 18-25 people from constantly being around alpha particle sources in a lab.

OH NO!  I'm turning to green goo!

Ehm, I'm still 19 and just as polite as the rest of the guys. My main theory why 7-22 year olds behave like this, is because(as someone previously said) that they are expressing this kind of hate/rudeness/etc in daily life, because it is not socially accepted. On the other hand: On the Internet, nobody can hear you scream.

This means that even if you hear them scream(mot likely), you can't do anything about it, since they're anonymous and can do whatever they please

The main reason is... "they do it for the lulz"
As a former troll over 10 years ago, I only
caused trouble for comedy's sake. It was
weirdly satisfying to watch people lose it
over something so trivial.

There really is no reason to respond or feed
trolls. That's the point, it's bait.

As for everyone else, well. Yes I imagine they
might have pent up aggression they cannot
deal with IRL and this is a safe STD-free way to
do so. Sort of like gaming ;)

What has happened to game forums these days, being a little older than some at 42 i remember the old forums when you could have a laugh and people helped each other,if an idiot turned up he found himself unwanted because the majority didnt want those kind of people around, but ive noticed over the last few years a SHARP decline in nice people infact it seems to have gone full circle to the point that the good friendley people are out numbered buy big mouthed nasty A£%holes throwing there virtual forum might around.

If you look at virtually any post you will see swathes of people calling the poster everything and anything, and shoving there opinions down the throats of anyone who dares to disagree.Ive been looking for days now to find a post where people are laughing and joking so i could join in some witty banter, but alas i havent found one that hasnt been plagued by forum bullies, the odd thing is i never meet these big tuff loud mouths in RL why ??,do all these 6"5 muscleheads that roam the net suddenley shrink into meek and feable wimps when they walk away from the keyboard,it would seem so.

So im sending out a call to all the old school friendley people who want to be boring and play nice ,have a laugh and yes say something helpfull and friendly, and to those others just for a little while how about being the real YOU the nice little boy/girl that mummy loves, the decent hard working dad/wife that his wife/husband would say, would do anything for anyone lets have a few days off our big tuff virtual selves and keep it real so to speak :).

I know what you mean. I'm not new to this forum but in general most gaming forums are going down the tubes, i think it's the younger PP generation. They forget that old gaming terms were never meant to be insulting, but just banter.

Oh it's strange you mention about the differences between Internet hardmen when they are no longer cowering behind the keyboard. As i am the complete opposite, i'm nice to people online but just can't seem to be nice in RL, maybe it's my natural disdain for man or maybe it's just because i am a cantankerous ass.

I think this is just what's happening after a game's release. As I recall, the same thing happened when Mass Effect was released? Many people complained about lots of thing, some people said that they didn't have any problems at all; majority of people posting on the Mass Effect 1 forums did complain about various things. [Something similar happened when Oblivion was released in 2006 ]

Please try to be helpfull to the young people that want to learn how to play a tactical rpg; show them the ropes and guide towards how to play this game :) And try to show the sort of language used here...by using it yourself. And by being polite and cordial to all :)

My usual sig is...I dont hate you..I hate everyone. :P   maybe were just getting old lol.

i'm 16. Guess that makes me the odd one out... :/ I enjoy RPGs and getting immersed in being "A knight who goes out of his way to help people" and i do have my fair share of "An ass who steals and kills" when i play RPGs but i go for the knight approach in the forums... if they can be compared O.o

If I havent pissed you off today...dont worry....there's always tomorrow.

40 years old. Been trolling the internet since '95. I tend to say it like it is, and feelings be damned. It's the internet, and much like the public, I have a low tolerance for it.  But I aint hard to track or run from what I say. I keep the same name on every game forum I go to. Since I do online tech support, I am on pretty much any game I have an interest in.  Most people now days on the net dont know how to have an argument. It'sreal simple...attack the post, not the poster. When I first started cruising the net, resorting to having to insult the poster was tantamount to conceding the argument.
Now days...insulting the poster is more important than tearing their argument apart. I get a kick out of it though when I can get someone to start insulting me, and the more posts I drag out of them, the harder I laugh. That is a true troll,
