I'd have to dig up my old thread where I wrote pages (ok, not quite) about this, but my theory was that she was a sleeper and not really directed to watch anyone in particular.  If anyone would be a target, probably Cailan.  But first she had to establish cred in Ferelden and hence why she was in the Chantry.  The Blight shook things up, so she had to move.  Since we first see her with Loghain's men, she could either be working for Loghain or recognizes that the Warden is someone important if the regent is looking for Wardens.  Either way she has to get out of Dodge somehow, so falling in with your party is a way she can do that while still looking to make a splash.

Loghain would never trust an Orlesian Bard and two years is a long time to hide in a Chantry waiting for the off chance that the King of Ferelden or one of two surviving Grey Wardens would pass through after a disasterous battle and just happen to take her along with them. Sorry it's super Lost like and it requires you to make every single thing a red herring and all information to be misinformation it's just an example of really bad storytelling. Plus she doesn't get out of Dodge, if you turn her down she stays behind and dies when Lothering is taken by the Darkspawn.

Loghain doesn't seem to mind Anora's maid, and she's clearly an Orlesian bard.

I don't think she planned to remain in Lothering.  But she needed an entre' somewhere, and somewhere like Lothering which is out of the way is perfect.  She could easily, once established in the Chantry, have moved to Denerim.  It is chance that Denerim- in the form of the king and Loghain- came to her.

I highly doubt that she dies. Leliana's clearly itching to get out of Lothering and her reason for hanging around - you - has left. And even if the Chantry doesn't have time to evacuate everyone, I can't believe they'd just leave their people who weren't involved with the evacuations to die and Leliana was clearly not involved since she was hanging around waiting for you and then just took off without getting anyone's permission to be relieved of her duties.

Edit: Maybe if she never meets you she insists on staying put until it's too late (unless she hears someone like Bryant or the Revered Mother mentioning you passed through) but if you turned her down why would she stick around?

Does it say that she dies in her codex? I know it says Sten dies but I've never met Leliana and turned her down. I understand that if you don't go into the tavern you don't get a codex entry at all.

I doubt that Leliana is a sleeper agent since:

There are way to many maybes for her to actually have met you

Loghain and Howe revoked their " I heart Orlasis" fanclub cards a long time ago

Its never acted on with her, around either Howe or Loghain.

Zevran is expesive and guarenteed to fight the warden, where as a spy is equally that expensive yet has a bigger maybe on it.

Loghain wants alistair and the warden dead, not spied on.

THere are plenty of people to use in Ferelden anyway who could conceivably do this.

No it says it in the Epilogue slideshow, if she's not recruited she stays in Lothering and is killed.

I addressed this up above and in my thread, but it does seem more plausible to me that she's just watching Loghain's men rather than working with them.

I dunno how much you've seen of Portal2, but the stuff I've seen so far has all been absolutely top notch. I wont buy it full price, but I'll get it as soon as it gets a price drop.

I honestly can't see Leli as a sleeper agent. I am still trying to work out how she ended up in Lothering from Denerim, but I have a theory. After joining in Denerim, I think she probably got "transferred" to a smaller Chantry, or she herself decided to get away from the big city, to avoid temptation and Marjolaine possibly doing something.



I'm still trying to work out some of the conflicting dialog between her Song and Origins, but one thing is for sure, I don't believe she is a spy at all.
