He popped up with a reason...

I offered Leliana a job... If she doesn't accept, then... well, it'll be a shame. She'll be getting a... battle she cannot win...

The Gman still freaks me out a great deal:

I liked how he got pwned in HL2 Ep1 though, at least for a while.

That's true... Those blasted Vortigaunts... Putting Gordon out of my control...

My employers weren't pleased.

Since HL 2 Ep 2 was the first Half Life game I played, I didn't exactly knew who G-Man was. So I bought HL 1 and 2 to find out who G-Man was.

And that's already too much!!

The Gman on the other hand is more than welcome here.

I have noticed that I have been compared to... The Illusive Man a few times...

But who needs "The Illusive Man" when you can have G-Man?

And it's great to be welcome here...

I would rather have worked for the G-man over the Illusive man any day of the week.

But we should get back on topic people.

You got a point there.

So I've been wondering... What if Marjolaine didn't betray Leliana? Would Leliana still be a bard? Or would she have grown tired of the game?

...I think she would have remained a bard... even if she got tired of it, it would be to please Marjolaine, but I hardly think you get tired of doing things with the people you love.

Interesting question. Leli never denies that she enjoyed "the game" but I do think that at some point she would grow tired of it. Perhaps if someone else betrayed her or if she ended up wronging someone who didn't deserve it.

Betrayal is part of the game. Eventually, I think something would shock her into reconsidering her life.

In a sense that is why Marjolaine betrayed Leliana, her objection to the injustice of treason.
Although... Leliana's motivations for speaking out against it are not exactly always the same...

Tough question. To really survive in that world, I'd imagine at some point you'd be called upon to do something that would require one to be extremely callous. Since I read Leli as too caring to ever change that way I think something would have to give. Although as long as she's in love with Marjolaine...Maybe what Marjolaine says is true. Perhaps she realized Leliana would have betrayed her eventually simply by walking away.

Hmm I thought about it some more... If Marjolaine didn't betray Leliana for the treason and actually either:
A)switched the papers back
or
B)Convinced Leliana to forget about...
Then well option A would show that Marjolaine actually has some humanity and would listen to Leliana... and the things they did would be negotiable and it would actually be a healthy relationship...
Or B would just show Leliana would listen to Marjolaine to any end. In the dlc Leliana can do some pretty despicable things and she enjoys all of it... so I'm not certain she wouldn't have gotten sick of it. She didn't know any of those people, and you can even steal from the donation basket and it doesn't phase her...

I guess the real question is: Why do you think Leliana spoke out? Was it because she thought it was unjust or was it simply a fear of getting caught?

I'd say fear of getting caught. But that's just me, I guess...

I think the fact that she didn't know any of those people or knew that they were either entrenched in the game themselves or less than noble nobles made it easy for her to do those things. They're all fair game in "the game," if you will. However, if the game ever called on her to hurt someone completely "innocent" that she could put a real face to or to hurt someone she knew and liked, I don't think it would be so easy for her.

I think it was a fear of what would happen to her and Marjolaine if they got caught. This is less clear in the DLC, but from what she says in Origins it seems like she was trying to protect Marjolaine.

As most have mentioned, I'd say it's fear of what would've happened to both her and Marjolaine if they got caught. "The game" was common stuff that wasn't punished by the authorities (only by fellow "gamers"), but treason was a big deal.

I think this as well. At the time Leli's morals and personality were still a mess. She shows no remorse from the things she does because everyone "had it coming". The stealing from the Chantry part probably shows her darkest side, but stealing (as well as plaiting undergarments on the board) feels more like a juvenile thing rather than a truly despicable act.

I do think that if an "innocent" were to be hurt by her, she'd regret it.

Well how are we going to define innocent? I'm sure plenty of innocent people have been indirectly hurt by "the game." But someone completely innocent, like a child, shouldn't be involved in "the game."  So would it have happened?

I like to think that Leliana knew both the direct threat of treason to her and Marjolaine, but also the threat it made to Orlay and Ferelden: a possible war which as we know war spares no one.  But it seems to be that was more of a lingering thought and being hopeless romantic she is all she really wanted to do was protect Marjolaine. *sigh*

By completely innocent I mean something like what Zevran mentions during one of his convos. For example, a bystander that had nothing to do with the issue. Or perhaps Leli messed up and killed the wrong person, someone who wasn't even remotely involved with the game. Something like that.

I'd say that maybe Leli did have an inkling of the consequences of her actions, regarding the relationship between Ferelden and Orlais, but her main motivation was to protect Marjolaine.

I know I'm not supposed to bring up Sex and the City again but one of Corinne Kempa's favorite TV shows is Sex and the City as stated on her facebook here in a interview done by Cana Marks.
