Ophelia Cousland was never much of a forgiving person. Steal from her, and you might get away with a beating. Betray her, and your head shall decorate the top of a spear. Murder her loved ones, and may the Maker have mercy on your soul.
The men who had ambushed Leliana should have known better.
The Gray Warden looked over the corpses of the would-be assassins one last time before pulling out her blade from it's latest victim and spitting onto his massacred form in disgust. Nobody threatens her friends and lives. No one.
The long walk to the camp was nothing but a march of silence. No one has uttered a word. No funny remarks from Alistair. Not even a hint of smartassery from Dorrian. Leliana especially seemed deeply concerned over the words of the assassin leader. Someone had hired those men to kill her. The question is who and why? It was a question Ophelia shall get an answer for one way or another.
Averting her gaze from the flickering flames of the campfire, Ophelia eyed Leliana's tent, whose inhabitant was uncharacteristically absent from the the social circle. Moving away from the rest of the company, she took off in search of the Orlesian girl. Turns out Leliana was sitting at the bank of a small lake, not even five minutes of walk away from camp, flicking pebbles into the water. What had happened earlier must have been eating away at the bard like a starved dog at a piece of fresh meat.
Unsure is she should intervene or leave Leliana to her thoughts, the young warrior pondered upon her options, when suddenly, Leliana began to undress. As one by one, each piece of clothing was gone from the bard's body, something caught Ophelia's eye. Much of Leliana's back was covered in scars. Ophelia's heart sank as she recognized the scars on her dear friend came from lashings, burns, and other cruel methods of torture.
Entering the dark waters, Leliana sought to find some peace from worry, however short-lasting it may be. Unable to get what she just saw out of her head, the Warden stepped out from her hiding place and strolled towards the body of water.
“Evening.” Ophelia murmured, as she began to remove her coat. “You don't mind do you?”
Caught off guard, Leliana turned around hurriedly, splashing water in every direction. “You startled me there for a moment.”
“You thought there'd be more assassins?” The Warden asked, kicking off heavy leather boots. They may have been tough, ugly things, but she'd be damned if they didn't keep her feet dry and warm in Fereldan weather.
Lowering her eyes in shame, Leliana almost whispered. “I'm sorry. I lied to you, you know? About why I left Orlais.”
“Figures.” Ophelia shuddered as a cold gust of wind hit her now bare body. Entering the lake, she found the water to be surprisingly warm and pleasing. She dove underwater, disappearing from Leliana's sight until exploding behind her in a loud spatter, seizing the bard around the waist.
“It had to do something with these, didn't it?” Ophelia whispered into Leliana's ear softly, tracing the scars on Leliana's back. Warden's hand moved gently, fingers as light as the softest breeze.
Leliana shivered at the touch the other woman, her heart racing. “I was betrayed. Betrayed by someone I thought I knew. Someone I trusted.” She starred at her own reflection in the water, reminiscing of her last days in Orlais. Her last days with her mentor. “Someone I loved. Marjolaine.”
“I'm sorry, sweetie.” Bringing her bard closer, Ophelia tightened her grip. What kind of monster uses people and then throws them to the wolves once she's done? Whoever this Marjolaine was, she would enjoy cutting her throat nearly as much as Howe's. As slowly as possible. Traitors deserve no mercy.
“There was this man I was sent to kill. I was ordered to bring whatever he carried.” Leliana paused for a moment, grasping the warrior's hand on her shoulder. “I killed him and found sealed documents on his body.”
“You opened them, didn't you?”
“I should have left well alone, but something told me I needed to see what's inside.” The tone of her voice and the strength of her grip told Ophelia how much those memories made Leliana uncomfortable. “Turns out, Marjolaine was selling information about Orlais to other countries. I was afraid. Concerned about her safety. Orlais takes a harsh view of treason.”
Turning to face the Warden, Leliana looked her straight in the eyes. Ophelia stared back, seeing the pain of betrayal reflecting within the red-head's blue eyes. A pain she knew all too well herself.
“Marjolaine told me that everything will be all right. That's why she needed the papers. To destroy them.” Leliana shed a tear, twisting her face into a sullen smile. “I believed her. I thought everything will be fine, as I ate up her sweet words of hope, coated in lies.”
“Next thing I know, the Orlesian guard shows up at my doorstep with those documents, altered by her hand, to make me look the traitor. They captured me.” She said in trepidation, letting a few more tears roll down her cheeks. “Did terrible things to make me confess. I was lucky enough to escape with my life.”
Ophelia swore not to lose herself to tears anymore, but tonight she had to make an exception. The hurt of her fellow companion, felt like daggers inserted into her very heart. To think anyone would do that to Leliana, the sweetest person she has ever met, caused Ophelia to clench her teeth in anger.
Cupping Leliana's face with her hand, Ophelia leaned in close enough for their lips to brush against one another. “Leliana,” She whispered. “We will find Marjolaine, and she will pay for what she did to you. That I swear.”
“Thank you for listening. Again, I'm sorry for not telling you sooner.” Leliana said with renewed vigor. Their conversation sure took a lot of weight off the bard's shoulders. “Let there be no more secrets between us.”
“Then there is still one secret I need to share with you. I'm a really big softie.” Ophelia grinned, pulling Leliana into a passionate kiss.

Yes, my Cousland is one dangerous lioness. Poke around her pack, and the best you could get away with is a missing arm.

Die Marjolaine! Die!
I was too lazy to come up with something for the prompt. I may do a late entry tomorrow.

I'm kinda inspired to write a Marjolaine encounter, but alas I'll be quite busy writing mundane college essays this week.

Leliana is probably the romance I liked the most and I know I'll probably be receiving biased answers by asking here but... here I go!
I'm starting a King Cousland playthrough where I'm going to make Leliana my mistress, the problem being... I'm going for maximum plot potential. I've not played a complete run with Hardened Leliana so excuse my ignore but will Marjolaine being spared interfere with my plan? Will Leliana tell me "Nope. I'm going to party town; Orlais."?
A few extra bonus questions:
1) How do you see Leliana reappearing in the sequels? As much as I love her romance, I don't see much in future plot potential.
2) If she's my mistress, will I receive the letter from her in Awakening? Is she still considered my romance option?
3) How does she react to being with King Cousland?
4) I'm a fan of the giggly Leliana, I might completely abort this idea if her being hardened changes her character a lot. How much does Leliana change if hardened? Is there a noticeable difference that you have a preference in her character?

As for your questions...
1) Neither do I really. Unlike Alistair and Morrigan, she isn't tied directly into the main storyline. The same applies to Zevran. We could see some references, especially if you romanced them, but I don't see any major plot potential either.
2) Yep, you will receive the letter as long as you ended Origins in love with her.
3) I assume you mean how does she react right after the Landsmeet when hardened? Well, I haven't done that ending (I only play females), but her reaction to Queen Cousland is almost identical. Actually, I haven't done the Queen Cousland ending either, but I did see the conversation for testing purposes. She is pretty cool about it, almost indifferent. What you have is a political marriage and she sees no reason for it to interfere in the relationship. She is also very intrigued about the idea of being "so close to the throne of Ferelden".
4) Leliana remains sweet and giggly even when hardened. Her major changes are her willingness to stay as mistress, the possibility of intimidating her at the Ashes (if you defile them), an expressed desire to return to Orlais (whether Marjolaine is dead or not) in the "what will you do when this is over" conversation, a different declaration of love (she doesn't talk about the Maker), and a few situations where she doesn't disapprove of things she would normally disapprove. She also has a different banter with Zevran later on. Oh, and she's also willing to join you in the threesome with Isabela.
For the record, I prefer unhardened Leliana for reasons I've stated earlier in this thread. I don't like the "I want to return to Orlais" plan, nor do I like how she's willing to back down from attacking you at the Urn (I prefer her standing for what she believes in). But that's just my personal preference.

Sorry I could not enter the prompt way to much work to do.
I dont personally harden Leliana, I did it once on my city elf who didnt think that violence and wanting to get back at people who wronged you was a bad thing.

Listening to the dialouge and the convo where you can harden her, I really am of the mind that she needs a friend, not a Sith like person to turn her to the darkside there. Especially after her "what will you do after this?" convo.
Also I just found a line that made me laugh:
Chose: I have heard rumors about Orlesian spies. >The female ones used seduction .
Then try to charm her with the line "I know you want me Leliana".
I had not heard it before and got a laugh at how hard she laughed, at the warden.

The moment she started singing was a good moment.patthelord wrote...
I romansed Leliana with ease. Her momments are without a doubt some of the greatest and most emotional i have ever seen in a videogame. Her singing is something i will never forget...
Hearing her giggle is also one that makes me smile.
My wardens are all these tough guys who can obliterate anything in their way, yet all it takes is one giggle to melt them.

I found it very funny that my Dwarf noble, who started out as someone who was well an ass to be honest. He was arrogant, and well hard. He fit the DN origin very well, but after he killed Trian he got the noblity kicked out of him.patthelord wrote...

He thought that all people were looking for a way up, and wanted to exploit him. Leliana and Zevran changed his mind a lot. He may have been a brutal person when he had to be, but was a kind person to his friends.
Turning Leliana down was hard, but fit him I think. Also the dialouge she has is awesome.
