The original gold standard build thread produced a bunch of builds which helped a lot of people. Since then consensus on how best to build characters has shifted a bit so its time for an update. The plan is to try and put together a small collection of the most optimal builds, covering every class. On top of that perhaps spot light a few other solid and different builds and collect some general advice on equipment.
If anyone is intrested in contributing I've set up a group which is open for anyone to join. social.bioware.com/group/2178/

There is nothing that can stop my shotgun adept.
All my biotics are maxed out and they recharge so fast on insanity that I never run out of something to cast or shoot.
And this includes my mini cannon. My shotgun overheats every shot. And it works perfectly. Every time I shoot, I use a biotic. and once that is done. I aim and take fire with another shot.
It can not be said enough how amazing the synergy is between a bastion adept and his shotgun.
If 10 people are in singularity, your explosive rounds will take them all out.
If there is a sniper verry verry far away, your rocket launcher (carnage) will take them out.
If you are between Three armatures, you can stasis one, lift the other and even cripple the third with a master throw and start strafing firing your cannon into him. Keeping everything else locked down with your biotics inbetween shots.
Nothing, including the vanguard. makes better use of the shotgun then the bastion adept.
Because the vanguard has to sacrifice too many points in pistol to get the shotgun he has a bonus for.
Will the bastion shotgunner have the most DPS on paper?
No. Not by a long shot.
But in application. I promise you. I can kill everything on the feild of battle then any other build.
This is because no other build can cripple defenses better.
Your soldier or infiltrator may have more firepower, But the guy you are shooting at just ducked behind cover and took first aid..... you took his health down pretty fast again but now he just poped immunity.
Where as I rush in, and cast singularity to the large group of mobs. Then I fire off a rocket at the sniper tower and take him out. Then. I turn back to thhe singularity and fire of a shot of explosive rounds into the cluster****. Then, while my shotgun is on cooldown, I stasis the armature that was about to blast me. Then I turn around and but another shotgun shot into the singularity which is about to end, and with two shots I just killed five people.
I turn around, and a Krogan is charging me followed by three geth. I lift the krogan and his momentum takes him flying over the edge. Then I unleash a shotgun shell into the geth juggernaught and he actually goes flying into the geth behind him knocking it down. I turn around and restasis the armature and launch a rocket into it just for good measure.
Excetera excetera.
Point is. With this build. I can always either shoot off my mini canon or cast a biotic to lock someone down.
Nobody has a chance to defend themselves.
And it is fun as frack.

Got a link to the old gold standard thread? Or even better, I'd like to see a list of what the gold standards were for each class in the past... as well as what constitutes a gold standard in the first place

Here is a link to the old thread http://meforums.biow...&forum=123&sp=0
For a list just go to the mass effect wiki http://masseffect.wi...ass_Effect_Wiki and do a search for gold standard. I tried a direct link but was getting a blank page, but that will work.

Possibly caused by the current page being a redirect to a watercooler discussion. The original Gold Standard Build Article was deleted. IIRC the reason given was it was kind of a hassle to maintain (being a wiki occasionally people would just plonk their random builds in it and few weeks later some one would clean it up) and of questionable note worthiness for an article. It was kind of a pity because it was a useful resource but the current discussion has most of the ones.
What is different this iteration of the "gold standard" is trying to sort the information before presenting it. Personally I want to keep core set of builds really small for ease of use and use some extra materials space to expand on it with information to tweaking builds to preference.
As for what Gold Standard means. What it means as an idiom in general, from wictionary
The slippery thing is for builds that the only measure that really matters is can it easily beat insanity easily. That ends you up with a really bloated set of best builds in a very legitimate sense. I think the important thing is a gold standard build is good build to compare to and use for reference when making your own builds.
Personally the term is a bit blingy for me but it has pedigree with ME1 builds.

Thanks for the links, and I found the Gold Standard discussion at the wiki no probs.
Yeah, my thinking is that it can get fuzzy since people have different preferences and styles, but I get it as far as beating Insanity goes (even though Insanity in ME1 is arguably less challenging compared to ME2).
So, I'm assuming the standards are built with the presumption that the player has all bonus skills unlocked and at their disposal?

Yes and similarly no points spent on charm or intimidate. It's about trying to absolutely maximise the potential for a character.
