3.      Problem Details

Shepard can't walk.

I've successfully played the game in the past (when the game came out) but my most recent install will not work at all.

-The keyboard works but I can't walk.
ie:
I can esc to menu,
I can spacebar to start the game / select items around me (if i load a game where i'm in front of an object).
I can open the map!
It just won't walk around with wasd (or any other keys i map to such as up/down/left/right)

Here is more details / troubleshooting I've performed:

-Other games do work. wasd works fine if i exit and run say Crysis.
-I have tried multiple and both usb and ps2 type keyboards
-I have uninstalled and reinstalled game
-I have tried both updated and nonupdated versions of ME2
-I have actually reinstalled vista (was on the list of things to do anyways) confirming correct drivers for everything involved
-I have yelled loudly at my PC

I am willing to try any of the above again and anything else that might resolve this. I would rank my personal technical experience as very experienced (9/10?) and I am at a loss. I've racked my brain on this for the past 2 days and come to you with empty hands :P

Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

I've seen this problem ocassionally, which I've always assumed to be caused by minor glitches in the level map or rendering engine - probably something we'll just have to live with unless these get updated. Generally it seems like it can happen if you move Shepard near the intersection of floor objects at different levels, and then take a wrong step - sometimes winding up suspended in the virtual air several feet above any of the ground objects. Sometimes other characters get stuck with you too, if they come too close.

Areas where I have seen this more than once include the landing zone on Horizon, the rock on the foggy little planet with the Blood Pac communications base with the tracking beams all over the valley, and the small hill that you go down from the shuttle landing spot when trying to recover the cargo from the three big Mechs (the mission that you can get from Aria on Omega). It is most annoying when this occurs after you have spent a long time fighting through a tough level - which happened to me recently on the Collector ship.

Once you are stuck, most of the time you cannot do anything but re-load a saved game to get out of it. I think I did find a way to walk out of it once or twice, but most of the time this does not seem possible.

Hope this helps!

To the first, I'm aware of the search function and no, none of those jive with my issue.

To the second, if you'll read my problem closer, this isn't an issue with the character getting stuck. Character cannot move AT ALL despite all indications that the keyboard is working properly.

(i can even go into key bindings and bind away from then back to the wasd keys. note that requires pressing the wasd keys and having the game acknowledge it)

Sorry for misunderstanding. I've never seen the character not be able to move at all (try to walk), which suggests a thread locking problem of some sort in the operating system, device drivers, or game - or the input isn't being processed properly.

My CPU and OS configuration is similar to yours, but using 32-bit Vista with 4GB of memory (of which the OS only sees 3GB due to video memory mapping) instead of the nice amount of real memory you have and a GeForce 9800 GT (512MB) video card. Not obvious to me why your configuration encounters this issue, although some programs either don't work or can work differently under a 64-bit architecture. You have the latest video and audio drivers available? How did you get driver version 197.47 for your video card, when 197.45 seems to be the latest available from Nvidia? That version seems to have several ME2 updates in it...

Have you done anything to the compatability settings for the game in Windows? Have no idea what you should set these to, but you might try playing with them - to see if they make any difference at all. Better than yelling at it anyway! I do that too! -:) I presume you've also searched the Microsoft Vista support forums for any problems similar to this, especially with 64-bit Vista? Might be worth a check.

Interesting problem. Hopefully someone at BioWare may have some ideas, and will actually respond to you. Wish you could send them a memory dump, or turn on some secret tracing options when you start the game...

Good luck, let us know what you find out!

resolved.

fresh vista install + older video driver (195.62) and ZERO other system drivers (just let vista do it's default thing) seems to work

my best guess is one of the following:

asus p6t support software (raid/usb/sound/whatever drivers)
comodo sandbox?

i don't know really, the whole thing is just insane i've never seen anything like it.

i've redone my computer like 5 times in the last week and just don't want to have to do it one more time to narrow down what exactly was causing the issue so we will leave it at that.

figured i'd post final reply in the freak case someone has this happen to them in the future.

197.45 seems to be the latest available from Nvidia?

that was a typo on my part. i don't know why i typed 47 instead of 45 (you can see in the spitout i cntr-v'd it was 45).
thanks for dropping a line!

Hey, great that you got it resolved - sorry you had to go through all the work of re-installing Vista to fix it! Ever considered upgrading to Windows 7? (I haven't, out of fear it would take months to get all my old games working again)!

Figured the "47" was a typo - no big deal - I just didn't know if you had a beta driver or something. If and when you re-install it, if the latest Nvidia driver makes the problem reoccur, you should report it to Nvidia. Their driver quality is pretty good, but sometimes not perfect...

Happy playing!

I just bought the Steam version of this, same problem, I saw you mentioned Comodo Sandbox mode and turned it off just to see if it would fix the problem. It seemed to work the minute I shut off sandbox mode, I'll have to play around with it to see if I can keep it on.

Thanks for the insight!
