It wasn't until farting around with the ME2 savegame editor that I found out that there was a possibility of having Williams whack the big lug.

Wrex is uniting the krogan through politics and coercion. However his brother has still risen to be the dominant clan on Tuchanka, he however has done it through warfare. In the course of pursuing the loyalty missions there Shepard inadvertently helps Wreave arm himself even better by eliminating rival, enhancing Urdont's reputation (with Grunt), and finally by giving them the opportunity to raid weapons and supplies from a rival clan.
I have my own hunch that in ME3 we'll see a united krogan regardless of whether or not Wrex lived. All that will change is how it was done. Wrex did it through peaceful means and afterwards his people will probably have a more peaceful future. Wreave will have done it through force and afterwords the krogan will probably remain violent and eventually fractured again. Wrex I suspect would like to see the krogan rebuild and not destroy themselves, Wreave I think probably ascribes to the idea that destruction will eventually make the krogan stronger.

That and his insta-kill Krogan charge.

If you killed wrex then the game would shut down. A fist will come out of the screen and punch you.
I agree with this statement, in fact I dare someone who has killed Wrex in their main game to show their face here.

Actually Chuck Norris comes to your house and roundhouse kicks you if you killed Wrex.

Is it possible not to? Even if you go kill Fist yourself, he just waits by the elevator to the Normandy.

It is, I've never done it, but it is. Want to know who's on Tuchanka in case one actually does that.

I not only shot Wrex after getting his family armor and despite having enough intimidate points, but then I called him a traitor and had him dumped in the swamp.

Somehow, my two favourite ME1 squaddies are completely optional and can both be left behind on the Citadel.
But I have no idea what happens if Wrex was never recruited. I don't think I'll ever find out, unless someone tells us about it in this thread

Dems folks killing Wrex are all nasty-like. They don' know that sometimes a man can simply mishunderstand or lose his self-control over matters affecting the fate of his speeshies and, like, get all angry and such an' in yer face with a gun. But tha don' mean that they intend to kill anywun. And if they simply did it becuz they don't likes him and such, well that sir is jist downright mean, and anyone who did such shid watch there backs, because me and Jessie, well, we don't take kindly to thems who think with their guns first and their noggin second. I also heard that Grunt fella saying all sorts of nasty thangs about what he's gonna do to krogan-killers like these types, 'ticularly since he's so proud of his new Urdnot clan and its ambishus leader.

Whta happens when you go to Tuchanka if Wrex is dead? Who is in charge etc.? I've been wodnering this as on all my playthrough's he is alive.
Well since everyone else is being a douche and not answering you...
If Wrex is dead then his ''brother'' Wreav is in charge of Clan Urdnot. He's more traditional then Wrex. There's no real attempt to unify the clans and other things Wrex is doing.
