Hey everyone,
I'm starting a blog to cover the World Cup in South Africa, and I urge all soccer fans to check it out and leave comments. This is actually an attempt to help me get into a graduate journalism school, so I will be putting a lot of effort into it.

I'm finishing up all the group predictions right now, then when the tournament kicks off I will do write-ups for every game, plus cover the top news stories.

My current Prediction for the winner?

......

Spain over Netherlands

Lets get some soccer discussion going! Who do you all think will win? Who is your favorite team/players?

(send me a PM if you want the link to the blog -- in keeping with the forum policy)

Netherland will beat all the teams, even Spain ... but I think they may have a hard competition against Brazil.
Van Persie, Van Boemmel, Huntelar, Sneider and many great players this team has (master Yoda!) :innocent:

If Slovenia survives enough to see the elimination round, I tell you, that means it's the end of the world! :P

I hope the Netherlands win. I always liked them. Perhaps for their orange shirts. But I believe Spain, Brazil and perhaps Argentina can be hard. I also believe that this year Italy and France will pretty much suck.

I will admit I am rooting for the Netherlands (even wearing my jersey right now), but I am being impartial in the writing, which is a little difficult at times.

Robben just hurt himself yesterday though. He might out entirely, he might just miss a few games, nobody is fully sure yet. But if he is out that means the magic four "van Persie, Sneijder, Robben, and Van der Vaart" would not play as a whole. Instead you would drop Robben for Kuyt who really has not performed well lately.

Brazil have the tendency to intimidate opponents, because of big name players and how many goals they can score. But you know what? Netherlands will happily run-and-gun with them, and I think that will catch Brazil off-guard. So yeah, I want Netherlands to win, but I just think Spain is too strong.

Germany actually will probably make it to the quarter-finals. But France is doing poorly, and Italy is just over-the-hill in terms of playing age for a lot of the players.

I have them only getting to the quarterfinals where they lose to Argentina. Argentina then loses to Spain due to coaching mistakes :wizard:

I'll be rooting for England this year, as always :P

But if I had to predict a winner i'd say Argentina.

I was going to put money on Holland to win until Robben got injured now I'm not so sure as both him and Van Persie are very injury prone. I think a Brazlian for top scorer is a decent bet too, they have North Korea in their group so could well run up the score in that match. I think Kaka was their top scorer in qualifying.

I think the USA will do well, they wont win it but will do well, maybe get to quarter finals. They are in a group they have a chance of winning with England, Slovenia and Algeria.

The Netherlands is too dysfunctional to go all the way. I am hoping for an African Nation to pull a stunner, but if that doesn't happen, and the US bows out early, I will be rooting for Germany.

US goes high this year. I believe they can beat England in the qualification round quite easily. Slovenia and Algeria are, I believe, easy as pie for the US team.

Hell yeah! World Cup FTW! Can't wait for it.

As for predictions, Netherlands. Strong team, has been playing very well and has tradition to be a strong competitor although never won a World Cup. I think their time has come.

Tradition speaks a lot in competitions like this, so I believe Spain will not go so long, contradicting their team which IMO is the best. Confederations cup last year says a lot.

Argentina? They suffered to qualify, Maradona is not a couch and Messi is not the same not playing in Barcelona. The team is strong but I don't think is a winner.

My country Brazil? I expect nothing. Really. I hate Dunga's team, but they're winners. America's cup and Confederation's cup were ours again. No one trust in them here, but they love to shut everyone's mouth and we have tradition in our side. I'm seeing 1994 World Cup all over.

Maybe we should have a bit of fun and make our predictions for:

Winning Team

Top Scorer

Player of the tournament

Biggest Surprise Team

Biggest underperformers

Obviously there can be no prizes other than knowing that you got it right. Anyone interested?

How the heck are all you folks picking the Dutch? Without Robben, no chance.

One man can't do everything. And Robben is junk IMO. He did nothing in the Champions league final. NOTHING.

Every World Cup and European Championships people back the Dutch saying it will be their year, its almost like a tradition. Most of the time the Dutch end up being undone by themselves with infighting. I do think they will miss Robben, he may not have performed well in the Champions League final but they wouldnt have got that far without him.

Well, yes, in the finals he was not very good, but then again, he did so well vs. Olympique Lyon, Fiorentina, ManU and Juventus, also had an impressive run during the whole Bundesliga season - 16 goals in 24 matches (Ribery was pale in comparison). He's definitely a huge loss for the Netherlands.
...

Winning Team: Spain

Top Scorer: Torres

Player of the tournament: Xavi

Biggest Surprise Team: Paraguay

Biggest underperformers: France, Italy, Argentina
