Every World Cup and European Championships people back the Dutch saying it will be their year, its almost like a tradition. Most of the time the Dutch end up being undone by themselves with infighting. I do think they will miss Robben, he may not have performed well in the Champions League final but they wouldnt have got that far without him.

Nah, their team in 2002 and 2006 weren't really good. And I don't think they'll miss Robben that much either.

One man can't do everything. And Robben is junk IMO. He did nothing in the Champions league final. NOTHING.

This actually proves my point.

Bayern is built on having twin threats on the wings -- Ribery and Robben (who singlehandedly knocked out ManU).  Each opened up space for the other.  Without Ribery, Inter was easily able to concentrate on Robben and stifle the Bayern attack (though baldy wasn't far from another one of his out-of-nowhere strikes).

Netherlands has two other fantastic attackers, yes -- Sneijder and van Persie -- but again, the dropoff without one of their big match-winners will be severe.  Not that they won't advance, but they can't realistically win without him.

Pretty cool to see so much love for the Dutch team ;)

And just so you know, Robben's injury wasn't that bad. They don't know when they'll fly him to South-Africa yet, but the coach says he won't replace him for now.

Wow hang on there flem1, Robbens goal may have knocked ManU out of the champions league but we did the damage to ourselves long before that. Although my pedantic half defence of my beloved team aside I do agree with you he will be a big miss for the Dutch if he doesnt make it. He offers something very different from Van Persie and Sniejder with his pace and direct running.

One thing the Dutch have going for them is if I was playing against them I would be terrified of tackling them anywhere within shooting range. They have Sneijder, Van Persie and Van Der Vaart there to take freekicks. So Robbens dribbling (and diving) would be a massive advantage in that that department.

@ Cerrydd

I think they find out tomorrow how bad the injury is, I hope he makes it but even if he does I wouldnt be at all surprised if the hamstring goes on him again during the tournament. Its amazing how often players come back quickly from hamstring injuries only for it to go again a couple of weeks later.

I tried to find an English article, but I can't seem to find any. Robben's injury was not as bad as expected and he's working really hard with his physiotherapist to recover. The coach really wants Robben to be there, so he's not replacing him yet. Robben himself is optimistic that the injury will be healed when the party starts.

Then again, if he recovers in time, this might still be a problem during the tournament, like you said. Robben is pretty frail, he's always having trouble with injuries.

As for predictions, I'm afraid I can't do any. I'm someone who really hates all kinds of sports, but only dresses up in weird orange clothes during European/World cups. But no, I don't think we will win :P

Other teams:

I think Germany is being overlooked again. As much of a chance to win it as any other non-Brazilian country.

Mexico is strong this year, with Vela offering a quick creative attacking flair that their previous teams lacked. I wonder how much the refs will help out South Africa, though.

As for my team, the US, we're definitely going to make all the games interesting. Whether this means wins or losses -- who knows?

I hope Robben makes it, the Dutch are good to watch and I would like to see them go far. Plus the more european teams the better if we try the same trick as last time. We went to the bar for all the matches and tried to pretend I was from one of the countries playing to get free drinks. I can pass for most European countries and the US with being blonde haired and blue eyed. Kinda falls apart when I claim to be Senagalese or something lol. Also stops working when I get drunk and suddenly switch back to an Irish accent.

The Germans dont look great on paper but always turn it on at the big tournaments.

Mexico I just dont know about, I always throw some support behind them only to be disappointed. Their team this year I dont know much about. Blanco must be about 36 now.

The US team I think will do well. Looking at their group they have an excellent chance of progressing and they showed in the confederations cup they can beat anyone on their day.

Robben is a great player. Hope the Nedtherlands have him ready for the WC. The problem with UCL is that the Germans faced a hell of a team with the best Brazilian defense ever.

Now, not only Maradona promised to run naked if they win but former coach Bilardo promised to have sex with the one that scores the championship goal... WTF is wrong with Argentina these days? LOL

I don't like to make predictions about football but definitely Brazil has the best team. IF Dunga can make the best team play, it will be hard to let this one skip. He already started badly by listing some very poor players, compared to what we've got back here and were "forgotten".

only Brazil and Netherlands have enough great players to reach Final. Argentina and Spain thriving for 3rd/4th ...

Netherlands is the best even without Robben. only 3 players of Netherlands are better than the rest of Germany Team! ... Mertesacker, Frings, Lahm, Buth blah! how can someone think that germany is a strong team already ?

In case anyone has missed the blatant match fixing that has been ongoing in the world cup for many years now: your big surprise team is gonna be an African team making it to the top three.

Heh, Frings isn't even in the team, and Butt is just 3rd keeper. Our team is quite young this time, and some of these players, like Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira, Thomas Müller or Tony Kroos are very talented, however their best time is yet to come. Schweinsteiger or Lahm arn't exactly bad players, and still in their mid-twenties, too.
That said, I don't expect that much from them this time, quarter finals maybe, but their time is yet to come.

Because unlike the Netherlands, England, and (until 2008) Spain, they don't find a way to mentally implode during the important games.

The Germans can be beaten, but they won't ever hand you the game by choking.

Brazil or Argentina I think will win the World Cup unless they have injury scare. England I think also has a strong team but Wayne Rooney might be too inexprienced to pull off a major victory. I'd actually like to see an African team win the world cup but I think if their up against Brazil or Argentina in the final I don't think they'll pull through a win even with the home advantage.

@jsachun I personally like an Asian team to be the champion

Ok I am following the Aussies - well because I am one, and it would be unaustralian of me not to support the team and until they get knocked out (its inevitable) I'll be screaming at the screen with my other soccer tragic friends. Once that happens I'm on the Spain bandwagon.

Englands team isnt that strong. Rooney is their one world class player and he hasnt scored since he got injured playing against Bayern Munich in the champions league. They are defensively not great, without Hargreaves they dont have a proper defensive midfielder and when your centreback is as slow and ponderous as John Terry you really need cover to stop people running at him directly. Plus Terry wont have the same protection he has in the premier league he wont get away with blue murder in the box. If they do end up having to play him and Carragher at centreback with Johnson at right back then thats 3 penalties just waiting to happen. If Rooney hits form though he can give any team a chance.

Its really cool that, as being Dutch myself, I see so many people here rooting for The Netherlands :P

We really have a very good team this year, much better than last years, so the poule fase won't be a problem (against Denmark, Cameroon and Japan) but they have to keep going so we dont get the same result as 2 years ago at the EC were we easily made it through the poule fase but got knocked out by Russia the next round..

This year, we have a team that can score with van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, Huntelaar, van Bommel (last 2 friendly games were 4-1 and 6-1), but the defense isn't that good so they have to make sure not to get to much goals against.

Robben's injury isn't that bad and he is going to South Africa but when he can play is uncertain, but I don't think we're gonna need him during poule fase

The Netherlands will probaby make it to the Quarterfinals, but then we'll get Brazil against us and although I really hope they'll win, I think its more likely that Brazil goes forth.

Spain has a very good team and as long as they don't suffer to much injuries among there players I see them win the entire tournament

Germany has a decent team, but not a team to win, they will probably make it to the half finals (beating Argentina in the quarter finals) only to lose to Spain

Argentina has a good team but Maradonna is not a coach so they won't make it past the quarterfinals because of poor coaching and bad relationships among the players/coach

France will suck. nothing more to say, there just bad

England will have to prove themselves again and with Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard they have some very good players who can score

So in short:

Spain over Brazil

Im just watching England having a warm up match against a local South African team. Those vuvuzela things are very very annoying already. It sounds like the stadium is being attacked by giant wasps.

News coming along the bottom of the screen says Drogba looks like he might recover in time to play. Also says Robbens injury is a slight muscle tear and they will anounce their plans for him later today. Not sure how reliable that is though.

The news about Robben is pretty reliable, I've just read on a couple of sites that his physiotherapist says he'll be able to play against Denmark

huh.. you guys think that Spain deliberately lost in the latest Confederation Cup in order to avoid Brazil and not test them against the penta champions? I say that they suffered of their long old problem... butterflies in the legs!

I've been a fan of the Holland since I've watched the Dutch Carousel back in '74 when I was 10. Boy, was I sad when they lost to Germany in the Final? And again in '78! *sighs* (besides the fact that beating Argentina in their home would be particularly fun for us in Brazil, specially after that stolen match against Peru)

But those are the teams that goes into history and will be remembered, like Hungary in '54 or Brazil in '82. Does anyone really remember the teams in Italy's WC1990 final match between Germany and Argentina? Or even USA 1994's Brazil vs italy? If not for a young 18 yrs old Ronaldo in that team, I wouldn't.

I remember some of the Brazil team from 1994. I remember Dunga in the middle of the pitch controlling play with his range of passing. I remember Romario and Bebeto playing upfront. Leonardo mostly for breaking Tab Ramo's face with his elbow and Taffarel in goal. But thats just me and I dont remember the whole team, they arent the kind of team that will be looked back on as a classic team.

I dont think we will see teams like that anymore, today individual players have too much say in teams.

Brazil are on tv now playing Tanzania in a pre-touranment friendly, I wont reveal the score incase you dont want it spoiled.

Well, I guess it depends on the country which finals become "legendary", obviously it's '54, '74 and '90 here in Germany. But some world cups were we ended as runner-up are also quite often featured in the media coverage these days, like '66 with the infamous "wembley goal" or 2002. But in my personal memory 1990 is very vivid, since I was in Italy on holidays during the world cup, and with Diego Maradona playing for Argentina and Lothar Matthäus playing for Germany it featured some players that made their mark in the football hall of fame.
