Not so much based as one of the things they drew inspiration from.

Half way through AGoT, impressive and very bleak. I can see some similarities there...

Also half way through and I really do like it. I can see that they were inspired by it.

I just started the 3rd book. I love the series, highly recommended. And yes, I see many similarities, down to small things like names (Jory, Maric come to mind).

I also love the series. And yes, there are many similarities for sure -- Ser being another one!

Ah, I've been reading this series for years it's fantastic. I'm not going to be clear so I don't spoil any new readers, but the Arena Duel where one character is going all Inigo Montoya...one of the best scenes I've ever read.

I can't wait for the HBO series, it's halfway through filming the first season and it has an impreeeesive cast. Sean Bean as Ned Stark, Nikolaj Coster as Jaime Lannister, Leana Headly as Cersei Lannister, Peter Dinklage as Tirion, Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo, oh yes, it shall be awesome.

It is a great series if you ignore the latest book ... and I can seriously see the similarities, but I would definitely say DA is inspired by these novels rather than based on them. If you've read "Bridge of Birds" by Barry Hughart (and I highly recommend that you read the first book at any rate) you'll notice that Jade Empire had some inspiration from that book/series as well, but that doesn't mean they are the same thing. It seems Bioware isn't afraid to acknowledge the quality fiction which inspires their settings, which I respect. (especially since I've read the material and can agree with their good taste)

I'm so excited. I made myself a Jaime/Nikolaj avatar. Posted Image

Just don't read those books too fast.

I did and have been waiting a while for the last book :)

Its not likely to be finished soon as George R R Martin looks fairly busy, he even has the TV series for a game of thrones in production.

starting out with game of thrones... pretty good so far... i've read the dragon age books and i want the "living in medieval times" translate into the next DA game... it was touched on a bit in awakening (spoiler) with the high justice quests... but i want it to be a fundamental part of the next DA game

similarities i see so far..

direwolf - mabari

old nan

ser

night watch - grey wardens

others - darkspawn

jon snow - alistair

I dont really see the Others as darkspawn since they do not seem mindless.

I love the books, been waiting ages for the next one but it seems to take forever Posted Image. There is even a blog for it Finish the book, George.
My favorite character is Daenerys with her dragons Posted Image. As I dont live in the US but in Europe I SOOO hope there is a way to watch the coming HBO-series for me.....

Definitely inspired by, not taken directly from.

No one's mentioned Duncan and his shield yet? Damn.

The wights are more like darkspawn.  The other comparisons are good, though.  I definitely see Jon Snow in Alistair, my favorite characters in the books and game respectively.  Some of my PCs make me think of Arya, though obviously she is younger.

Maybe they will eventually make it available online.  But I don't think HBO does that because they get a lot of steam out of repeats.

Maric is one of the sons of Davos the Onion Knight, but supposedly he dies in a naval battle.  Maybe there's another Maric, though, or there's something about that one that I haven't gotten to yet!  (I'm in the 3rd book)

Why would anyone want to ignore the latest book?

1) "A Feast for Crows" is a part of the ongoing story.
2) "A Feast for Crows" furthers the story.
3) "A Feast for Crows" is just as well-written as the previous books.

aFFC is the weakest book so far, but it's a transition book. Those are never as much fun. :)

And I'll take a weak offering from George over a strong offering of many other authors any day, hands down.

supposedly based? supposedly by whom? you? some friend of yours?  some no name person that claimed it on the internet?

DA:O takes things from a TON of sources..it's not "based" on any one thing....

so tell us....what bio dev said it was based on it? or are you pulling **** out of your ass?

You can definitely feel a bit of GRRM in the Dragon Age setting. It has a similar mood about it. But I also noticed quite a few things in the game that made me think of Wheel of Time. The Blight being the obvious one. Shadow/Dark spawn, King Cailan/Maric Theirin = Lews Therin

I love the series, but became extremely annoyed with Geroge R R Martin and his continuous delaying of the latest book. I'll still read it when it comes out, but I've mostly moved on from this series. I highly reccomend people read Steven Erikson's (a canadian author btw) series 'Malazan Book of the Fallen'. It's much more complex then Martins, but if your able to get through it, it is absolutely AMAZING. Its easily my favourite by any author.

I've heard a lot of praise for Erikson. Definitely gonna have to look into it.

I know what you mean about George. I'll probably have to reread the series when the next book comes out, it's taken so long.

in dragon age read somewhere that maric sailed off on a ship and left his kingdom to cailan...

in game of thrones, there is a scene where king robert told lord eddard that he sometimes thinks of just boarding a ship and sailing away.
