I am currently in the deep roads in Orzammar. I finally get to use Shale, but every time I try to use rock barrage, nothing happens, yet my stamina is reduced. Shale throws the rock into the air, stamina is reduced showing that the tactic occured, but nothing comes down. It is a dead tactic and is beyond frustrating, as this is my second play-thru and a very useful tactic indeed.
I hope this will correct itself, but I don't know. Anyone else ever have this problem???

I'm 100% sure that you're using patch 1.03. v.v
That patch has one annoying bug when it comes to Shale and it is exactly the thing you just described: Rock Barrage is not working.
I don't know if there is a fix for it, you could check dragonagenexus.

It is a shame, when Shale can only use four abilities at a time, for one of them to be broken.

Yes, I am using patch 1.03. I installed it for my second play-thru, as I will be moving directly into Awakening after completion. I only recently found a stealing bug fix. Is there a Shale bug fix? Please tell me there is!

It must be a combination a patch 1.03 and downloading the camp storage chest mod, because I never had this problem before. Sure I can go back and re-install the previous patch, but the what about Awakening? This is FUBAR!!!

AFAIK 1.03 is solely responsible. I've seen posts saying people with 1.03 and no mods reinstall to 1.02 and suddenly Shale is fine again.

OK, this is getting frustrating. I go to the website, but cannot find the old patches. They only offer 1.03, knowing all about the glitches!!! I hate to get the patch off an unknown website. Any suggestions???

Found the patch on another website. Can't believe this is offered by Bioware. So I suppose I can't just install the old patch. I'm guessing I actually have to uninstall the program then reinstall everything. Is this correct? Please, I need an answer on this as I am not about to uninstall everything if I don't have to. Please, I want Shale back!

This is horrible. Tried uninstalling then re-installing. Applied patch 1.02. When I tried installing Awakening patch 1.03 began to install, so I immediately stopped installation. (This makes sense since Awakening needs this patch. I just wasn't thinking.) Went to play Dragon Age Origins, I immediately realized all my DLC was gone. It started to automatically download, but to download all that content, even with cable internet, would take another hour or more.
What really pissed me off was that all my Add-Ins were gone. All those cool projects I would have to look up again and download. This has all been a huge waste of time. Luckily, I am consistent with making file backups and PC backups. I will try to restore files first. If there is any difference, I will just do a total PC restore, as I had just backed-up my system today.
Again, I just wasn't thinking about how much I would have to re-install when trying to apply a previous patch. It is absolutely ridiculous, even if you know what you are doing. I will just pretend I didn't waste the last 3 hours of my life and play without Shale from now on. Hopefully, one day soon there will be a patch that allows me to use her again without the glitches!!!

Ended up doing total PC restore as I continue to write to myself. I guess bugs are no longer a "hot" subject. It frustrates me to no end because I just wasted 5 hours. My night is gone as I have to go to bed soon to awake for work at 5am.
I tried a file restore which renews everything under My Documents and other areas, and this almost worked as I installed patch 1.02 with no problems and clicked onto Dragon Age Origins only to watch all of my DLC once again start to download.
I told myself, OK, this may take 1 to 2 hours, but at least I'll be able to play with the previous patch. Then to my horror I realized that some of my latest DLC like Feastday Gifts, Feastday Pranks, Darkspawn Chronicles, Blightblood (Origins), and Blightblood (Awakenings) would not even work without the 1.03 patch.
Out of shear frustration I did a complete PC restore and brought back my computer to exactly how it was 5 hours ago before I began this horrific journey!
I would love to start a new post on how ridiculous it is that we cannot apply a previous patch that will, quite simply, remove the data from the newer patch and overwrite with the previous one. I guess this doesn't matter since I am now dependent upon this patch just to play my most recent DLC, and also, it doesn't seem like anyone really cares about glitches anymore. Seems like my most successful posts were always about nudity and sex. Who cares about gameplay, right?

Unfortunately I'm running the Steam version of Dragon Age which means I don't have any way to unpatch the game. Unless someone knows of a way to unpatch the Steam version I'm just going to leave my playthrough sitting there until Shale is fixed.

Even if I carefully planned out which files I needed to keep when I uninstalled, then reinstalled the game, it still would not matter because I would not be able to play the latest DLC. So I guess the burning question is, "Is there a Shale fix?" Really, until the next patch comes out, that is all I want to know!!!

The premium DLC files (which shale is a part of) are encrypted, meaning the community can't open them with the DA toolset and therefore can't fix this on their own. Any fix will have to come from Bioware.

Thanks nen. Someone truly understands my pain.

Bioware, you need to address this since the DLC files are encrypted and this can't be fixed by the community. 1.03 broke Rock Barrage. 1.04 did nothing to fix it.
Review of the issue:
1.03 game version
Rock Barrage does nothing. This behavior is observable in DA:Origins with 100% reproducibility when the 1.03 or 1.04 patches applied.

Nathan Willis, you seem to be the only Bioware employee willing to tackle these issues. Can you please take note of this bug?

Yeah Shales always been broken you cant even talk to her either from one point, as it transports you to a funky OMG textures and game have gone wild area outside of camp...now patch 1.04 got rid of the texture thing problem, but you still cannot continue talking with her and finishing her story mode etc...sad that you cant even use the DLC to its full ability and many have paid for it as well..

You're wasting your time bothering the publisher or the developer for a refund. The best way to make your dissatisfaction known is to not buy any more Bioware products.

I'm just going to try to keep one of these Shale threads on the front page. Over six months without a fix let alone acknowledgement is ridiculous.

It's Bioware. I'm not contradicting you, just clarifying. They haven't delivered on any of the promises they made since before the game was released, whether it has to do with providing 2 years of DLC, improved communication with the community or their assurances that releasing on multiple platforms would not impair the PC experience or the ability to deliver patches to the PC. We can't know their reasoning, but we CAN discern a pattern and respond as consumers by not buying their products.
